But I'm flabbergasted that you don't see CK as woke, or at least a militant feminist.

Ah, you couldn’t call Dr. Ciara Kelly a “militant” feminist. The reason she got on so well on Hook’s show was because she agreed with him on things, for the most part.

She’s, certainly, a “feminist” but she is hardly militant. Her views are moderate enough, by today’s standards.

...the woman whose opening lines to her first solo show on Newstalk were "I am a woman".

You do realize that was a response to Fintan O'Toole's article criticizing Newstalk after Sarah McInernney left and after George Hook mess. She pointed out that it's not true that there are no female presenters during the daytime on Newstalk. If that's the sign of wokeness and militant feminism then just about anyone on Newstalk is far left.

The station has always been a natural home for centrist or right-of-centre broadcasters.

    Cuddihy
Kelly (in particular on her feminist rants)
    The entire OTB Crew

None of those fit into the #woke "right on" bracket? Really?

That's it in a nutshell. For some, any argument for womens rights, gender parity etc equals militant feminism and therefore, by that rational Newstalk is on the far left. As expressions on this thread have shown.

The same in relation to any consideration for the welfare of others or the environment is enough to qualify you as 'woke' and therefore confirms Newstalk is a socialist enclave.

As I've said previously, NT seems pretty reflective of Irish society. Largely fiscally conservative, socially liberal with some further from the center in either direction than the rest, but none completely out on the wings.

    Perhaps in your opinion.

Laughably saying she'd welcome Travellers to park up on her street isn't playing to the woke gallery?

Why are my examples dubious? Because you disagree with them? They all happened. I gave 3, 2 of which are from her current show. Her stint on Breakfast was immediately prior to that.
Because if you read the context that others have given (besides, the bald statement "I am a woman" hardly makes one a militant feminist) it's clear that you've taken at least some of those quotes of out context.

As regards the travellers issue, I don't know what the context was. I'd be surprised if she said she'd like to see an illegal settlement on her street, as opposed to being ok with having travellers as neighbours.

In any case, it's safer to look at the totality of a broadcaster's output over a sustained period of time, instead of isolated incidents. Ciara Kelly is a liberal, for sure, in the same way that Stephen Donnolly and Simon Harris are liberals. None of these people can reasonably be described as social-justice warriors or whatever other term people like to use.

All share a very typically centrist political outlook.

I think Ivan mentioned Cagney will be doing the show next week. I'm not sure if that means full time. I think programme reshuffle is usually done in September so we might have to wait a bit to find out.

I’m sure I heard Cagney say the other day that he would be doing it for a month.

Could see that, would be surprised to see him take on a heavyweight prime time role at this stage in his career.

Interestingly, before Matt Cooper got the Last Word gig full time, himself and Fintan O'Toole used to deputise for Eamon Dunphy. When Eamon left the show, I understand that his last act was picking his successor and Matt got the gig (maybe I am misremembering the whole thing). But, since then, Fintan seems to have stuck to the role of columnist (author) and guest rather than host.

Sure Fintan is barred these past couple of years, isn't he?

I think The Irish Times ban is still in place?

That's true, but has he done radio work (as a host anywhere) even before the ban? Outside of the original LW work.

Not as far as I'm aware. Even the Irish Times politics podcast is hosted by their movie critic, which is an odd deployment.

I'd imagine an intellectual heavyweight like him would see that as a more prestigious gig than being a glorified Anne Doyle...

So again we’re back to any criticism of Ciara Kelly is because she’s a woman and her critics are sexist. Ok, great debate.

To put it in a sporting context, it was like when Alex Ferguson picked David Moyes as his successor.

It took the top brass at Man Utd 8 months to realise it was a huge mistake.

Kelly would be a horrendous choice imo. Her opinions are garbage more often than not + her obsession with speaking over experts/people more qualified to discuss certain topics is torturous. Sarah McInerney would be the obvious choice.

Why is Ivan retiring? Is he ill or something?

SOR’s replacement is being announced soon isn’t it? Sarah McInerney is only in the slot for the Summer.

With rumours Claire Byrne is getting it, I wonder would Newstalk be potentially waiting to see how that plays out and approach Sarah if that does turn out to be the case.

I would also wonder if she would take the job after what happened last time.

Sarah's previous stint in Newstalk didn't work out too well, I'm not sure either party would be considering a reunion. FWIW, I actually think she's improved enroumously since she left NT btw.

I'm not a fan either but the bolded point would arguably make her the ideal replacement for Ivan :pac:

Says he wants to live in Wexford full-time and "It's impossible to hold down a full-time broadcasting role while living elsewhere, and at 60 it's time I got a bit of sense." Make of that what you will...

New business venture I suppose. He definitely isn't the type to potter around the garden.

Well if you listen to the presenters DO'B has no editorial influence on their output. Many have commented on this.

Yeah, that's why they give such great coverage of his various court cases!

Yeah seems odd to me that a guy who has been at the heart of the action in media and politics for 40 years and still seems engaged and on top of his brief when presenting on radio & tv would want to jack it all in for a quiet life in Wexford. Maybe he thinks he does but will find himself bored witless in a few months...

i thought I heard him say at the end of the TV film slot that he would look forward to hearing them with Mark Cagney next week

    is that official ?

He's been flagging this for the last year. On numerous occasions he mentioned that he wouldn't work beyond 60 and he turned 60 last October. You can be sure he has other ventures up his sleeve, he often mentioned public speaking, after dinner speaking and wedding celebrant...... I'd say he'd be a hoot officiating at a wedding!!
I very much doubt he would be idle. He has a bad back, often speaks about it and a little grandchild too. A new phase of life, 60 is young these days, he's right to go at this age, lots of time hopefully for new ventures and a bit of fun. (Pat Kenny is 72 and still slogging it out every single morning!)

Why would he start a new business with all his pensions? He'll be able to devote himself to full time gambling and boozing.

I'm just telling you what they say.

I'm not a fan of TLW in recent years but to be fair to Matt Cooper he's not shyed away from criticizing DO'B or covering topics related to him.

They usually do a broader resuffle of the schedule round September so if they intend to move a presenter from another show to drivetime it would make sense to leave it till then and put a locum in for Ivan in the meantime.

Well it's a fact she worked there, and it's a fact she left within 3 months after being moved to weekends to accommodate Ivan's return.

At the risk of sounding like a journalist being questioned by the Gardai I can't reveal my sourced but it's straight from the horse's mouth from one of the parties involved, and given the manner and tone in which it was delivered I can only assume the feeling is mutual.

Most people aren't primarily driven by money, probably not even Ivan Yates. I read his autobiography a few years ago. He isn't obsessed with money, he's just very, very competitive. Even a bit ruthless. That's why it's hard to see him retiring.
