Slight change to the routing of the 23, it will now serve Sycamore Road instead of Jamestown Road.

Side note - I like that they're doing local area maps for the changes alongside the overall phase map!

123 users will suffer on the Southside only due to Go Aheads staffing issues, not the worst thing in the world considering DB are losing 11 routes but putting back on 8 routes so 3 routes worth of drivers to add back in

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 265 ✭✭BusGuy

Plus, Donnybrook is yet losing another route, but that could mean increased frequencies on other southside routes…?

The 73 is going half hourly then hourly after 6

Going from one of the best routes in the city to one of the worst routes!

Is it the shape of things to come I wonder? Routes which move to GAI having their frequency butchered?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,784 ✭✭✭john boye

I see the bus lane on Tara Street is being further interrupted by the pedestrian crossing at the Townsend Street junction being extended out so buses will have to try and move into the middle lane and hope someone will let them in. They already did the same further up at the Burgh Quay junction a few months ago and it can now take an age to turn the corner. Another baffling decision

That's a disgrace what's the reasoning for such a drastic cut in frequency?

Does anyone know who'll be operating the 82? Currently rely on the 83 from Stannaway Road (it's starting point) towards Rathmines, so expecting a considerable decrease in frequency and dependability.

Back when GAI entered service around 2018-2019, that had actually led to an increase in the frequencies on a lot of the outer routes they took over, so I don't get why they'd do this now with a busconnects route…
The 2021 tables had the 73 planned to have a 15 minute daytime frequency, but now they're essentially getting a third of the 123's frequency along a rather similar route.

I really hope this is an exception rather than the norm, and hopefully we don't see this again.

The 82 is supposed to be operated by Dublin Bus. Afaik they're gonna operate all the F spine phase routes other than the 73.

The frequency tables say the 82 should have a frequency of 20 minutes, but someone working at DB might correct me on this.

Yeah it doesn't sound much different to the 83 frequency wise. It's coming from Tallaght of course but with it being a radial route I wouldn't imagine it'll be full by Crumlin.

There has been no timetable yet for the 82. I am seriously thinking of moving back to Ringsend to go on it… Times should be available soon, maybe in the next few days hopefully…

I'm just thinking what will happen when BusConnects fails sometime? Will the old routes come back? It seems like it, because if I were a bus driver, there's no way I would follow a company that forces people to do 10-minute services. The only positive aspect I've had from BusConnects is probably my S4 link now to UCD, and the extra X services from UCD. But will there ever be any X buses from UCD to O'Connell Street? The X27 goes pretty far to O'Connell…

And remember that you're only getting around €800 from GAI just do a route. Ridiculous.

Wild that the 123 is getting reduced to a flimsy go ahead service. They hacked up the 46a on the northside pretty bad and gutted the service through ballyfermot with the quasi half hourly G spine. Some areas have just gotten unlucky.

No, all the vacant duties are currently advertised city wide. The 49 drivers will get up to 2k compensation for losing their marked-in status, as will the 54 drivers in Donnybrook but all the new duties will be filled based on seniority.

Where is this 123/73 reduced frequency thing coming from?

From this post back in July - it’s from an internal Dublin Bus document.

That appears to be the only source for it.

What's the compensation piece about? Did they get cars to drive to handover stops?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 19,092 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

They are referring to the driver’s “marked-in” status on a route.

In other words, they follow a set roster rather than a random one as a “spare” driver.

“Cars” in this case refers to them being marked in rather than a vehicle.

    Edited above for clarity...

There's agreements in place to compensate for losing your marked in position or for compulsory transfers to a different depot etc...

Back in the day it used to be 10k+ for having to move. Nowadays it's 1k + a yearly amount, depending on your service. Subject to a maximum of 2k. Then the taxman gets half.

Thanks both for another interesting insight into the inner workings of the bus service!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,702 ✭✭✭mikeybhoy

Why can't they just give the marked in drivers a line on the new rota would save having to pay out compo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 489 ✭✭ITV2

from the bill I've seen for the 82 it's every 15min service at peak, the 20 off-peak, and 30 mins late at night.

Everyone has to pay tax, that's part of life in a country like Ireland. Not sure why that has to be mentioned. The current marginal tax on someone under €70k per annum gross is 40% tax, 4.1% PRSI and 3% USC = 47.1% so they don't take half. Secondly, you could make a €2,000 pension contribution after the year is over and you have your relocation bonus in. File your tax return, get €800 back. Net cost to you would be €258 versus taking it as cash in the bank, but you have €2k in your pension growing tax free. I digress, I'm sorry!

    Not enough drivers apparently

If DB and GAI don't have enough drivers to cover the changes then the changes should be suspended until they can provide a full service as originally advertised
