I am happy for Church St that it is having some kind of revival.

Meanwhile over in Connaught St things just get worse and worse.

Walking there last Sunday morning. Lovely warm day around 1:30 pm Drunken scumbag out cold at Connaught gdns. Further down got shouted at in some Slavic language by two more cider drinking scumbags.

    Nobody else around

    Its a fukin disgrace

I could cry when I think of how it was

town council missed a trick not widening the street when they had the opportunity, i believe there was talk about it in the mid to late 90's. Also a pity the canal was filled in and never utilised as an attraction.

And to think that Wan*er Alan Kelly tried take Monksland away from RCC too. Connaght st is left to rot they way it is at the moment

The only thing that will save that part of the town is residential rates to go up, which would mean knocking of some properties and building apartments, a la Bastion Court. Do that, and businesses in the area would obviously have more footfall. It'll be years before anything to that scale happens though. The street has been dead since the late 1990s.

I didn't realise that he proposed that. I may actually vote Labour next time around based on this. Athlone is now a rent pressure zone. However (save Roscommon "heroes" take note), Monksland, being in Roscommon, isn't.

Anyone continuing to get shafted for rent in Monksland has these "savers" to thank.

well, seeing as it was all about Westmeath CC grabbing the rates that a few businesses out in monksland pay then you see how Westmeath CC treat the connaught street area.
also the rates are lower in Roscommon so the move east would have cost them a lot of money

Lots of controversy going on in relation to the social housing announcement at the orchard.

Can anyone tell me any info (out of towner) in relation to neighbouring estate Woodville?

Does it have good reputation, are the houses in good nick etc... ?

Never heard of Woodville estate having anything but a good reputation, decent houses and mostly professionals living there (Dept of Education, Ericsson etc nearby) but I'm living abroad at the moment so can't speak for recently.

I don't know the different areas in Woodville but seemingly the council have been buying and renting more houses there with the intention of allocating to the housing list

had not heard anything about this. Was actually thinking of purchasing in here a while back, was still looking in there to be honest.

Is there a danger this estate will become more run down in the coming years?

We have just sold our house in Coill ur which is just out the front of Woodville. The seven houses which are being built beside our old house (opposite the school) have been sold to a housing agency, similar to the deal which went on in the Orchard. Haven't heard of any other social housing in Woodville though.

Are there any collection services for old furniture in Athlone? I'm looking to give my house a make over in the coming months and would have bedroom lockers and chests of drawers that i would like to replace but are still in good nick.

You could try selling them on adverts/done deal and have the buyer collect.

If you are on facebook, try Buy/Sell/Swap Athlone - you could sell or give away there. As Addle said, have the buyer collect.

Are there bouncers on the door?

After what happened in there the other weekend it seems like they need bouncers inside the pub to keep an eye on family who run the place.
I'll never darken the door of the place until the current ownership is gone, which by the sounds of things won't be long.

    Care to share the news?

Allegedly two sons of the owners imprisoned the girlfriend of a lad in the smoking area and proceeded to give the lad a hiding. The lad in question in the son of a another well known publican . Money was allegedly offered to keep the Guards out of the matter but this was refused . The two assailants are reported to be enjoying some time away in the UK. I know the family of the lad that was assaulted, even the moon wouldn't be far enough away. The family running P',Mac's will learn quickly that Athlone will not tolerate the BS they get away with in Roscommon.

There's plenty of places, depends on what style of pub you prefer.

  • Registered Users Posts: 32 tipphunter82

somewhere to watch a midweek match and a bit of music after, not too pushed about the music. more interested in sport and a lively pub with a bit of craic.

  • Registered Users Posts: 598 ✭✭✭arseagon

Personally I quite like the Shack but it's a bit of a trek from the town centre

It will only be midweek ill be in Athlone. I wont judge the town on one pub anyway.I worked in limerick for 6 years, Great mid week nightlife once you knew where you were going.

Any pub with a big screen and a bit of craic will do me on a Wednesday or Thursday night to break up the week.

Peddlers despite the above incidents is doing a roaring trade and there are worse places in the town you could go too just dont go back for any lock in's.
Castle Inn is probably best place to watch a game for Athmosphere, Small though and need get decent seat, Fiddlers is not too bad either. Shack and Tack are ok but trek from town centre

Im not sure where fiddlers is?? will the shack and tack be full of students?? ill assume, seans, the castle in and the snug will be full of tourists but if there is a bit of craic there i wont mind. nothing worse than sitting in a depressing pub just blankly staring at the tv.

  • Registered Users Posts: 598 ✭✭✭arseagon

The Shack won't be full of students, some do venture down to it from time to time but it's mostly regulars... I always put the Tack room down as a students only bar which is why I never went near it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 32 tipphunter82

I suppose the best thing to do is have a pint or 2 in them all and see what the craic is. Im sure plenty of people venture out for a pint or 2 during the week especially in a big town like Athlone.

All the students go to Charlie's. Tack does be quite enough since nightclub closed beside it.
Castle doesnt have many tourists in compairson to seans and snug and usually all regulars that watch games in there.
Fiddlers is just around the corner up the hill beside Dean Crowe.
