If anyone has bought a Switch lately - How long do the updates take when you turn it on for the first time now?

My nephew got one for Christmas and not sure if I should tell my sister to set it up before Christmas. If the update is only like 20 minutes it'll be fine to leave it.

Shouldn't take more than about 20 minutes, I'd definitely do it before Christmas morning though. Speaking from experience, watching your new console update for 4 hours because the servers are overloaded Is not how kids want to spend Christmas morning

maybe I have OCD but the thought of opening a gift and repacking freaks the bejasus outta me. Pristine gifts all day long!

There's nothing sealed with the box (or wasn't with mine) so you'd never know the difference but more importantly the recipient of the gift isn't going to have to wait for the system to update Christmas morning. :)

Yeah the box couldn't be much easier to open and close without messing it up luckily enough.

Nope I am totally with you, I love opening and setting up a new console, its only happens every 3-4 years so I savour it.

    PS3, worst update times ever.
I think I bought Gran Turismo 5 on a Friday, couldn't play it until Saturday.

Anyone know if an Irish credit card will work on the South African eShop?

It will. I use mine all the time. Also works on the Russian eshop if a game is cheaper there.

I would be like that in the days of Nes, ps1, ps2 etc. Not in the day and age of updates bigger then my porn collection back in the day.

I got my ratty xbox one s and I opened it up to do all updates and make her proper account. It took me ages and doing same thing 6 in the morning on xmas day does not sound appealing. Specially when most likely it will take even more time due to psn and xbox live being ddosed to oblivion.

Just brought the Switch and dock into work for some lunchtime Mario Kart. It looks pretty great on a 80in screen!!!

My Xbox one did do my head in, but it was all part of the process of it being brand new and just out of the box. My Switch was pretty quick setting up, I have never had to set up a new console at Xmas, is there really a big difference in the time it takes?

Servers have limited capacity, so what may take but a fleeting moment in September can take considerable longer on Dec 25th.

Seems like Yooka-Laylee had some real effort put into the port according to digital foundry. They even asked the Unity devs to port new features to an old version of the engine to get it running smoother, which caused it to be delayed further. Nice to see they didn't just slap out a shoddy port. I know it doesn't mean much if it plays poorly, but still, nice to see a good amount of work put into the port.

The camera controls were apparently improved too. Anyone here bought/played it yet?

    I'm not terribly impressed tbh.
But that's mostly about the basic type of game it represents.
There's a reason these titles don't get made anymore.

Not sure this is the right thread for this question but don't think it warrants a new one.

What's the best way to go about buying a digital version of a game as a Christmas gift? Thinking of picking up Overcooked for the young lad.

A Hat in Time while not as good as Odyssey is meant to be far better than Yooka Laylee.

Nintendo eShop on the console. You could buy an eShop voucher beforehand in Gamestop or somewhere or pay directly with credit card or PayPal.

    Hope that helps,
    M

No way to buy it through the web and then have it digitally delivered on the day? I guess I can just do it on the night of the 24th after he's gone to bed.

Went looking to see if it was on Switch. :(

Rachet & Clank on PS4 is another excellent modern non-Nintendo 3D platformer.

I was wondering about this too - I don't think it'd possible to buy games on the e-shop from a web browser and have them auto-download to the Switch?

Does anyone know if it's possible to buy an individual neon red joy con or can you only get it as part of the red/blue double pack?

I quite liked the Alice game on the 360/PS3.
Also, the first Jak&Daxter game was fun as was the barely noticed Haven on the PS2

Is 200gb the lowest size micro sd people would recommend or would 128gb hold a person over? I need to get one before xmas as I expect a game or two as presents and want to download Resident Evil Revelations for the xmas break.

I'm gonna go for a 128GB one. I plan on downloading DOOM, Resident Evil Revelations and maybe Wonderboy. Anyone recommend Wonderboy?
