It's Mario so it's going to be great, but I can't be the only one to get a whiff of Sonic Adventure off the city levels, right?

I hope not, Sonic Adventure is rubbish (sorry Dreamcast fans, it is).

Also this is 100% running on the Xenoblade X/Zelda BotW engine. Looks very like it and I've a knack for guessing engines. Could mean levels that are a lot more open and massive.

I thought the same when I saw the real people. Hopefully, there's a reason for it. It's a Mario game. It's been a long, long, long time since there's a been a Mario game that's been terrible [I should point out I'm referring to the platformers], and I certainly doubt it will approach Sonic levels of chronic disappointment and disgust.

I think the city levels look quite different and fresh to be honest. People have called for Mario games to switch it up a bit over the past few years and this looked refreshing to be honest. Being made by Tokyo EAD too so I've no reservations that this will be another high quality game.

I retract my statement from the switch thread, this is not sonic adventure come again more like Jet Set Radio with a hint of Crazy Taxi, all in all it looks awesome, nice to see Mario home in New York, Bob Hoskins is smiling somewhere.

It's not even the idea of Mario being in New York that I don't like, it's just really really ugly. The rest of the game looks fantastic too.

I'm pretty excited for Super Mario Odyssey especially given how different it seems from previous Mario games.

I'm excited because it looks like a change from the Mario 3D World/Land games, as good as they were they weren't a patch on the Galaxy titles.

Fair point, I thought, from someone elsewhere on the interwebs that 3D World was more of a sidestep than one forwards. Odyssey does seem to be going for The Next Mario in a way 3D World didn't. Though I guess after Galaxy there may have been a conscious decision to ride on nostalgia to avoid unfair comparisons.

I'm really hoping the realistic models end up on the cutting room floor and we're seeing them in some sort of beta-reveal video ten years later. It is jarring to the point of being creepy, a la the aforementioned Sonic stuff.

The problem for Sonic wasn't the setting but the terrible gameplay in the 3D levels, a problem that is ongoing.
Mario titles have been the master of the 3D setting, so I trust the storytelling to take care of the "realistic" environment the little plumber finds himself in.

Having just played through Galaxy 2 recently at Christmas, this looks like it has much stronger gravity and much lower jumps. He seems to fall very quickly and both the long jump and triple jump look quite small compared to past versions.

While the terrible gameplay was certainly a big part of what made them so bad, I don't think there's any denying that a lot of the 3D Sonics' modern day meme status comes from the world it was set in. Whether it was Adventures 1&2, Shadow the Hedgehog or Sonic 06, the fact that it was the cartoon animals in a fairly gritty, grey, real-world setting populated mostly by realistic humans and with incredibly self-serious plots definitely factored into what made them so enduringly goofy.

I'm really not a fan of the city sections in the new game myself. Visually, it just looks like a step into uncanny valley. I assume it functions as a sort of hub world, but it just doesn't suit like the hubworld in Sunshine that was full of cartoony Delfinos. That said, it's a Nintendo Tokyo first-party Mario game, so I have little doubt the gameplay itself will be anything less than brilliant. If I have to hold my nose for the city sections, it won't be the end of the world, and maybe it'll even win me over with more context and gameplay.

The city area sends to be Donkey Kong themed a touch, "New Donk City", Dixie Street and Diddy Mart... Anyone think the kongs may make cameo appearances, or is it just referential?

The Delfino scenes upset people at the time, not nearly as much as the bulk of Sonic Adventure or it's sequel... Big the F-ing bloody Cat...

Looking at this, it becomes quite clear that I was wrong in assuming the city would act as a hub world. It's clearly just a normal level; you can even see a checkpoint in the square in front of the Empire state building. It was also strange to see how small the city really was. Not as small as the one in Sonic Adventure, but definitely not as big as it looked at first glance.

Be great if in the real world we see a lookalike of Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo. Maybe even have a few notes from Almost Unreal playing.

Song popped into my head yesterday which made me think of it

Be even greater if they just dumped the creepy real people.

    Please.

    Legit case of heeby-jeebies here.

Considering the game is supposed to be pretty much finished, I don't think that's going to happen.

They don't really bother me to be honest.

    It really looks superb.
The hat function, both as a character and in game tool, reminds me of both Luigi's Mansion and Mario Sunshine, and their use of similar items, the Poltergust and the FLUDD

I'd be amazed if this game is anything less than brilliant, I'm sure when Nintendo were planning the Switch they would have wanted this to be a launch title or at least a first-three-months title. For it to be delayed so much, I'm expecting greatness

The Capture Bubble allows Mario to jump through lava. Shaking the Joy-Con allows you to move more quickly.
