I'm looking for a Type 2 to Type 1 adaptor to charge my wife's 2015 Leaf from the same tethered Zappi charger that I use to charge my 2018 Leaf. Most of the adaptors out there seem to be €150 minimum but I'm not prepared to spend that much. My wife is happy using her granny cable to charge once every other week from the outside socket in the driveway (she doesn't do that much mileage). However, I'm looking for an adaptor to make use of the excess solar from the Zappi during the summer months.

I'm looking for a second-hand adaptor at a reasonable price or an old tethered Type 1 cable that someone may have swapped out for a tethered Type 2 cable. I'm thinking if I got the Type 1 cable, I would be able to make my own adaptor by cutting the cable and connecting a Type 2 socket on the end. Thanks.

I don't think cutting the cable and joining an adapter will work, the car can sense when two cables have been joined together and won't allow charging.

I think it's something to do with the cable resistance, it has to be some specific value. Adding something in line like another cable alters this and the car won't recognise it as a valid charging cable

But you can buy type 2 extension cables. I know, as I have a 10m one. Therefore, I assume you can get the same extension with one end as type1

Oh I know you can buy one, but I'm guessing there's something different in them that makes the car allow it to charge

But I don't think you can change the connector on one end of s charging cable and then plug it into a tethered cable like they were suggesting

I've seen a nice looking adapter like below but unfortunately it goes the wrong way for a Leaf using at Type 2 charger

    https://evonestop.co.uk/collections/adaptors/products/newstyle-type-1-to-type-2-adapter-converter

I haven't been able to find the same adapter going the other way

Nice one slave1, I was thinking about that in case I need to buy an older Leaf as a second family car. We too only have a "semi" tethered type 2 charger.

My better half was driving my Ioniq, when I worked from home and now she wants to dump her 141 Ford Fiesta diesel for a second hand electric since I went back. She travels 40km every second day and has free charging.
I have a Zappi charger , so something compatible would be nice but not necessary.
    Thanks in advance.

What kind of budget is she looking at, anything with a Type 2 plug will be directly compatible with your charger, I'd probably be looking at a Renault Zoe in her case.

You could get a 30kWh Leaf and buy the adapter slave1 showed earlier

Other than that, seems like the 22kWh Zoe is the only option in that price bracket

Personally I'd get the 30kWh Leaf and live with needing to use an adapter. It's got more range, more space and rapid charging and probably 4 years left on battery warranty

There was an Ioniq sold from a reputable second hand used EV specialist last week for €13900. Now that was very cheap, but if she can up the budget a bit, another Ioniq might be on the cards. Far better value than spending similar money on a first generation Leaf. Alternatively, the first gen BMW i3 would also be within budget, and if she can up the budget by a few thousand, she'd get the later, 50% more range model

Or just keep most of the budget and spend €6-€7k on a 2014-2015 Leaf 24kWh with the newer chemistry and roughly 100km range in summer

2 Ioniqs in the driveway might get confusing, especially if they wound up being the same colour :D

Just wrap the grille of one of them then :p

Saw that one exact same colour as well. Would be weird and good at the same time. Looking at a 171 Leaf tomorrow in a garage 15k with 80k Kms on the clock.

  • Registered Users Posts: 64,989 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Silly expensive imho. For €15k you should be able to buy a 171 Ioniq if you keep an eye out.

Was thinking that, was going to have a look anyway. There is one for 12500 a few posts back on donedeal, might bid on that if we like this one.

I assume the Ioniq is superior, seems to have an extra 40km range for a start and of course I love the car

  • Registered Users Posts: 64,989 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Well it's up to you, looks like she doesn't need the extra range of Ioniq. Leaf is a great car, but very old skool now. You are guaranteed a higher total cost of ownership on a 12k 2016 Leaf 30kWh than on a 15k 2017 Ioniq over a few years. Unless there is something in the Leaf that you don't like or can't get in Ioniq, it would be a poor choice of car to buy.

Don't forget a 2017 Ioniq still has a full year of bumper to bumper manufacturer's warranty remaining too...

I wonder would it make more sense to get a 24kWh Leaf for around €9k and save yourself the €6k versus a 30kWh?

I feel like the 24kWh Leafs have lost a lot of value in the past couple of years so you can pick one up with decent battery health for fairly good value. The 30kWh ones are holding their value for now but they could have a big drop in the next year or two

I guess the debate is whether you go cheap(ish) now and minimise the losses or take the risk of spending more now and hoping the value doesn't drop too much in a few years

It's also worth considering how long your wife wants to keep the car for. If she'll want to change in a few years then future value becomes important. If she's likely to drive the car until it's ready for the scrapheap then you'll want a car that'll last a long time

I’m in the exact same scenario, put in a Zappi2 tethered type 2.
Got this guy on AMZ, works perfect

Cheers for the recommendation but it's still a bit pricey for what I want it for. If I just use it for the excess solar, it will be a long time paying for itself, especially when the FIT comes in.

I'll keep an eye out for a second hand one or the Type 1 cable. If the adaptor you linked worked, I can't see how a similar homemade one wouldn't work.

Thanks for all the replies, looks like a 2017 Ioniq or a good, healthy 24kw leaf. What is the best things to look out for on the Leaf?

Basically the SOH of the battery.

Someone advised before to test heated seats and steering wheel.

I wasn’t selling but got a knockout offer for it, so it went today. Would have looked at another Model 3 performance but lead time was too long.

Replacement is electric, pics will follow soon :)

You didn't go the EVM route and buy a Twizy did you? :)

Has got to be a Taycan so :D

Would you mind sharing how much you got for your Model 3 Performance - it was an early 2020 car I presume?
