You also need to have your C1 license BEFORE the closing date of the 19th. I find this a bit harsh on people but that's their choice.

People who are genuinely interested in a career as a Paramedic would have, or should have their research done and be prepared. It's common knowledge since the 2008 recruitment that a C1 Drivers Licence is required when applying. It is also common knowledge that the window for applying is quite tight. In short, one must be well prepared.

The amount of people who have asked me for advice over the years is high, I always advise them to get their C1 licence, the amount of people who fail to do this is also quite high. The majority of those who took advice on getting their licence are now working in the National Ambulance Service as Paramedics, some are now Advanced Paramedics.

The word has been on the street for months now regarding a 2016 recruitment.

I am gutted, have only recently finished up a healthcare degree program and plan for the last year was to do paramedics. Have arranged a ride along on a city ambulance and a few other things associated. I got my provisional C1 and D1 licence but have not had the oppertunity to get enough lessons before booking my test :(

Really though if the hse recruited i'd get in with my provisional C1 and Full B license :( no possible way i'd get the test by next week :(

Would a fetac level 6 in trades be sufficient instead of leaving Cert maths and science ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,412 ✭✭✭toadfly

Does anyone know if having penalty points on your licence is an issue?

In short no, well for the last recruitment it didn't suffice! But maybe a quick call to manorhamilton would answer that for you! Is this the first time public jobs haven't been involved in the recruitment process?

You will be a Paramedic soon with DFB! wouldn't get too fussed about this to be honest.

I know but it would have been alot more effeciant to go direct hse route rather than through DFB

You are better off in DFB, straight into a roster after training with a fixed work location. HSE is far from efficient lol

Are you only joining DFB for the paramedic side?

No not at all, initially I had thought about just joining for the paramedic but after the recruitment process and many station visits and research I realised FF really interests me, however I do still feel that down the line I will focus on paramedics alone, but who knows!

Am another one in the C license problem. Wasn't in a position to be able to get the lessons until recently and was hoping the rumour mill about recruitment opening in May/ June was true. Have been having the lessons and was applying for the test this week to hopefully have it by the time recruitment opened. In full-time employment already so not sure I could have taken the salary hit of going back to training but would like to have had the opportunity of the choice to do it as I'd love it. Not to be...

I've only just got the C license, still have the pass paper at home. Haven't had the chance to apply for the actually plastic license!!

    Will that be OK?

So during your training it'll be basic pay, but when you qualify and are out on the road you will get your shift allowances. These can vary depending on the shifts you get rostered. There is the opportunity for OT also and this can really depend on what base you are working out of.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,126 ✭✭✭KwackerJack

Is there any allowance's for training!

Id love to be a Paramedic but the 10k+ drop would be painful :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 117 ✭✭flix1

Afraid none that I know of. It's tough no doubt but if you really do want it, you can make it work, but it takes serious committment & sacrifices both personally & financially.

I did, more than likely in second class and delighted to have got it! But pure paramedics would have been my first choice! All the same I'm delighted to have got DFB and will be as good a FF/paramedic I can be with them :)

There is a training allowance for placements, it's approx 200 a week if I remember correctly. You only get this on placements away from the training college. Shift allowance and premium pay will be paid from when you start your internship depending on the roster.... Be aware that as a relief you may not get regular premium pay. There is OT available, but as more staff (ie you) come into an area OT will be reduced. When you qualify you will earn anywhere from low 30s to low 40 depending on weekends, late runs, OT and subs.

I don't believe it would be a waste. Why rule yourself out by not applying? If they rule you out, then it's out of your control but don't rule yourself out. You have a level 5 award which is a bonus.

For the same reason anyone wants to become a paramedic! The rush, the challange, the fact each day is different, being on the front line of emergency care, helping people at the worst time of their life and hopefully helping them through it!!

At the 2010/2011 recruitment anybody who didn't have their licence in their hand by the closing date was refused entry to the aptitude tests in Dublin.
They are very strict on this.
It was heart breaking to see people with their licence turned away from the door.

Heard that alright as far as I remember they accepted the certificate in 2013 when I did the tests it was acceptable I had it the licence but almost sure it was acceptable then and it states in the job spec again this time it's definitely States its acceptable

Is this the first recruitment drive for paramedic that you had to have passed 6 subjects in your leaving cert?

Not at all! Paramedic Science is basically what you are doing so its reasonable to ask that you have a second level science subject as you are basically undertaking a level 7/8 course! Most health courses in a third level institution require 6 passes minimum and a science subject. What is unreasonable however is throwing away good candidates that do not hold a C class licence. As a previous poster mentioned she has a full third level degree in the same area of study but cant get in because she doesn't have a proper driving licence which is really a basic thing to get compared to a degree.

We'll true but considering she wouldn't be able to to drive the casualty to a hospital is a slight issue!!

It's like a person applying to be a pilot with an aviation degree but not actually having any flying hours or the required license!

It's not unreasonable in fairness part of the job is driving the vehicles this requires you to have a C1 licence which is the legal requirement to drive them it has Notting to do with knowledge you have or have not you cannot do the job without it unfortunately
I agree with you on the leaving by the way

It may sound harsh but the criteria is the same as 3 years ago it wasn't a secret you would need a C1
I missed out in 2010 I didn't have a C1 also I didn't have a science subject in my leaving so what did I do I printed of the criteria at the time I went of did my EMT did my C1 and I did D1 incase it came back as a requirement then in 2013 I was lucky enough to get it you have to be prepared for these recruitment drives as the don't come up to often and you have very little time to get stuff sorted

But how come the NHS can bring trainees on with a D class? And how come the DFB can do it also? All it would take is good management of resources and allowing/sponsoring you to get a C1 during your initial training in conjunction with your blue light course.

They obviously get the funding for it The NAS do not also a lot of them NHS trusts you still have to pay for it yourself they just give you time
And like I said in my other post I edited in a bit it was no secret about C1

    Well that's just a shame!

I'm not going for it myself but I just found it interesting! A lad I went to school with is an advanced paramedic with the London Ambulance Service. One day he was on the way home on the tube when he looked up and seen the advertisement! Applied just out of interest and got it! He never wanted to do it but he just taught why not! He went on to be one of the youngest paramedics to be offered and promoted through the advanced paramedic course!

I love the attitude here that you have to be interested for years to get the job and do all things such as EMT and C class to try and get it! Look fair play to you and you deserve the position for what you have done.

May the best Men and Women win!

Because the NAS want you to bear the cost of getting a C1 licence rather than having to train you or risk not passing it.

To be honest it's a pretty obvious cost saving measure that is based on common sense and it's hard to pick holes in the logic

I just think it's unfair to older candidates who may not have had everything up to scratch compared to a modern leaving cert and how not having a subject in the LC can override having every other requirement plus experience. But I suppose you are right as it is a degree course.

It is in no way like paramedic science or a level 8 degree. You spend 3 months in a class room including practical and theory, then you go on placements in various areas. How does that compare to a 4 year degree?

Again since I have lived and worked mosly in the UK I would have thought that their would be a lot more to it than that as all paramedics now do a third level university degree in the UK! I'm surprised that's all their is here to it in the classroom. But I stand by my point that if your coming just with a LC that it should reflect your ability to study in the area of science and study well.

Just read through the criteria, isint it strange that the criteria is lower for DFB (pass level in junior cert is acceptable) and minimum leaving cert in this. Yet more training and diversity in more areas in DFB. Strange that there is no minimum standard across the board

Hey, I haven't been able to download the job specification and additional information. Thought I'd saved it on my phone but they must have taken it down when applications closed.

Would anyone have a copy they wouldn't mind sending me please?

    Thanks
