Dominick Cruz was offered an instant title shot and he was out for over 2years due to injury, now Cruz opted to take a 'tune up' fight and fought a guy outside the top 10.

But this is also the UFC and this is McG, if he takes some time out the red carpet and cheque book will be out for his return

    Gsp is another example

Folks cut out the nonsense, when there is a troll don't feed them..just report and move on.

As for discussions keep it civilised and lets remember this is an MMA forum not after hours. A few of you will be find yourselves going on a break from the forum if you don't start to have a bit of cop on.

Axwell, you might want to get your facts right before accusing someone of being a troll. I made an innocuous post and all the McGregor fan boys went nuts (which I acknowledged in another post), some creep even went trawling through some woman's twitter posts. If I realised the McGregor fan boys were so highly strung and the type of people who get easily 'offended' then I wouldn't have posted that.

Eventually their emotions will settle and they can go back to the important debate of "who's more famous".

Dom is a phenomenal fighter he never lost the belt I always saw him as champ as he overcame his injury I presume I'm not alone hardly a push to suggest Dillashaw wasnt the undisputed champion with Cruz floating around the division.

So when Dillashaw won the title and defended the title and while Cruz was rehabbing injury after injury and unable to train never mind fight, you think Cruz was still actually champ?

Well Dillashaw was the official champ same goes for Barao who eventually dropped the interim part along the way and rightly so.

Dillashaws first defense albeit on short notice wasn't a million miles away from Doms "tune up" fight.

There's two sides to this and I really think neither is incorrect...The man to beat was Dillashaw he was top of the pile and a legit champ no denying that but at the same time Cruz was the man to beat as he lost the belt outside the octagon not in it.

Am i alone in thinkin him coming back and fighting for the belt again is more exciting than defending it?

A new challenge for him and that's when he's at his best just look at nate first fight to see that.

Haven't really been tuned in the last week. Did Conor make the announcement yet that everyone was guessing about last week??

He could do with some time off for his own sake in all honesty, his body has been through an awful lot over the past few years and fighting so much has got to take its toll, always little niggling injuries that are not getting proper time to rest and heal. He has made a lot of money the past couple of years and put in a lot of work. It must be feeling like time for him to relax for a little bit, enjoy the fruits of his work. Recharge the batteries and see how he feels a few months down the line without having any fight on the horizon.

It will raise more questions about his mentality alright, in terms of his motivation to win a belt and seeming lack of ability to motivate himself to make title defenses, it has been suggested as a sign of mental fragility in him, and though I don't think that is the case I do think its interesting that he seems unable to motivate himself beyond the initial hunt for a belt.

The announcement may not even be time out, but it would make sense and it would make for a great "He's back" moment in a year or so and it writes its own narrative for him to talk about how he is going to come and claim what is his while dismembering whoever the "fake" champion is etc

Would it surprise you for the UFC to let him keep the belts and have interim champs though? Wouldn't be a big shock to me, they shouldn't if he is taking an official career break but its possible. Taking the belts back and him coming back to regain them is a better story long run though.

So was there an announcement made or what?

    No announcement afaik.

McGregor isn't motivated by belt-defences, he's motivated by challenge. Why climb a hill you have climbed before? Thats his mentality. I cant see him ever defending the 145 belt apart from maybe Aldo (and I said that 6 months ago too :) )

    This.

I said all along that vacating the FW belt, winning the LW belt at 205 and then reclaiming the FW belt in the new year would have been more exciting even than fighting for two belts in NY as he now is. But obviously if the latest rumours are true and he'd already told Dana that he'd be taking a lot of next year off, that would explain why Dana went for this option instead.

If it's twins will he be allowed to keep both or will he have to vacate one?

It's a shame that Conor has got bogged down into having kids at this stage of his career.

All over the net where people would / should have been talking about this fight, a lot of the talk is now about if, when, why Conor is taking a break and for how long.

Shame Dana didn't keep his lip buttoned.

In fairness, how many extra eyeballs are going to be on the fight if they think he is taking time out.

Agreed. To be honest, it would have been better if he'd announced it at the 205 Presser, that way it woyld have the same interest-generation effect without being as massive a distraction.

The question is who will be an mma fan after mcgregor....

I will be. McGregor got me into the sport, but since then I've grown to really enjoy it outside of McGregor's fights. Watching people like Dominick Cruz, Robbie Lawler, Cain Velasquez, pretty much the entire lightweight division has really opened up my eyes to the sport as a whole

A new challenge would be doing something he's never done...like having a single title defence on his resume.

Won cw fw. Won cw lw straigh away so no chance to defend fw
Got Utc off cw so no chance to defend either title
He was messing n the lw fight as well and he won the fw belt by sub to prove a point iirc
Won fw and wanted to replicate his cw success
I think if the original dos anjos fight had happened then he'd be defending a belt by now but I'd Ask which belt should he have defended and when
