Everyone in the office knows who McGregor is.

That's saying something, as one of them isn't sure who Michael fasbender is.

I think mcgregor has the most reach
    - in the age of facebook etc -

is that not how it is measured now?

He opens his mouth, sends a tweet and it is shared how many times across how many countries and generates how much interest?

People may be aware of bono, i am but apart from him asking poor people to donate money to poorer people from his ivory pulpit i couldnt tell you what hes up to, but mcgregor is actively famous if that makes sense. Hes constantly on something somewhere as any time he does anything it is nearly an event in itself.

In such a short time as well. If hes.not.the most known famous person in ireland he soon will be.

Surprise surprise Mother****er, as the man himself would say. I work with a good few lads in their 60s and they all know who he is. My daughter is 4 and has been talking about him since she was 2, her great granny is 96 and knows who he is.

And you don't think any of that is due to you being a fan? Or maybe you think most Irish Two year olds know who McG is?

Let's put it this way ....for all the media for UFC 137 Donald was more than happy to do every interview without his Cowboy Hat. Why? Full head of hair.

For a grown man to walk around with a cowboy hat on non-stop to hide receding hair and baldness, it takes a lot of ego.

His ego is obviously hurt by the emergence of Conor. He gets paid way less than Conor, gets way less attention and comes across as a parody of Stone Cold. Before the rise of McGregor there was a case that Cowboy was one of the top 3 or 4 draws/characters in the UFC. Now, he's just another dude.

Don't get me wrong, i think he's a brilliant fighter to watch and his fights are always entertaining but he's clearly affected by jealousy.

I dont think its to hide baldness,
he's not a real cowboy anyway, he has a 'dude ranch'. its part of his image and all he seems to have got from it is Budweiser sponsorship. a real cowboy takes off their hat indoors, he had it on during the last Joe Rogan podcast, thats like wearing sunglasses indoors.

I think he's bitter because he's been pimping himself like a 5 dollar whore to the UFC, not realizing he should have been making alot more money. whatever respect he gets from the fans isnt enough to pay the big bills, Conor has made him realize how bad his business brain is

The guy does more in a month than any of us will do in a lifetime of bucket list ticking, I think he's doing ok

Any link to this. The only thing I've ever hear about his boxing is the he was ab also-ran in a good club.

Anybody I have spoken to who saw, sparred or fought Conor as a youth in boxing were left somewhat unimpressed by his ability, he always had that good left, but nothing else. Jab was poor, defence was poor. From everything I have been told I would highly doubt he would have been able to turn it around to go on and become a top boxer. He was aware of that himself in fairness, he has made himself a fantastic overall martial artist and the boxing training has clearly stood to him, his head movement, his distance control etc are all there.

It gives him a great advantage in terms of striking in the MMA world, but it would not have been enough in the boxing world where he would be fighting guys with two good hands, with just as good head movement, footwork etc there is no shame in that, it hasn't hurt him in life at all.

I don't think so, think he won an u16 schoolboy title?

    Which is different of course.

McGregor is by far the most recognisable face in Ireland at the minute. Only one close to him is Rory Mcilroy.

    Not even a discussion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,342 ✭✭✭✭StringerBell

I assume we are leaving the likes of Bono, the One Direction lad and anybody more recognisable out? :) Rory would be more famous too in fairness

What difference does it make anyway? He is a world star now, maybe not exactly the world over, but in terms of the MMA world and crossing over in mainstream he is a superstar.

    What's the difference (I don't know )
Anyhow in the notorious doc it was said he was a u16 national champ and they showed this trophy
It's not legible but that's what they said

Here is an interview with Tony where he says is again

I remember the doc and the trophy and plaque, it was the schoolboy amateurs though not a national.

    That's the difference :)

Is that not the seniors list ?

Not just seniors no, which is pretty clear.

The difference between a National Schoolboy title and an All-Ireland is surely obvious?

I don't know another way to explain it, I'm sorry.

Cowboy has really change in tune in regards to Conor recently.
    In the build up to 189, Cerrone had a totally different attitude. He was asked about Conor at a QnA. He jokingly referred to him as the Golden child. But then said;
"Conor is a good... he's doing a great job. He talked himself right into a title shot. Hell yeah, good job buddy. crowds jeers HEY EY EY, son of a bitch. He fights. Everyone's like wait until he gets a test. Then he wins...Ten he wins. Now he's got a real test (Aldo). What if he wins? Then you've got to shut the fuck up, huh. I dunno.

Conor is probably generating more noise/news/traffic this year.
But Bono is ridiculously famous in the background doing nothing. Topic should be dropped until Conor has been on The Simpson, Family Guy and South Park at least.

What's the smaller spike there do you think after (what I presume is) 196? Mayweather chatter perhaps?

As for the who is more or most popular, really lads, who actually cares about this sort of stuff?!
