Yeah, seems a strange one. I'd a 118i with the 3 cylinder turbo for 500 miles and thought it was a grand engine. It returned 40mpg over 500 miles for me and that was encompassing some autobahns and whatnot. Can't see it being any worse in a 3 series in comparison to a 156nhp 2.0 but I'm sure BMW know best :)

The 48v mild hybrid regenerative braking stuff isn't overly difficult to squeeze into existing designs and is a no brainer for the brands to reduce the average CO2 emissions.

Those doors on the 7/8 series must be very heavy.
Thank god BMW have made this standard!

An easy way around any potential ban on sales of diesel and petrol only cars too. Though any such ban is far further away than the time frames being suggested imo.

The EU have said that the proposed ban of petrol and diesels is currently illegal under EU law!

I'm very glad to see BMW has gone back to a four cylinder engine for the 318i (now if they could make the 320i and 330i a straight six like they used to be we'd be sorted!), if you're paying for a premium badge car the least you can expect is a decent sized engine with at least four cylinders, a four cylinder engine is a lot smoother than a three cylinder unit.

BMW are phasing out three cylinder engines, not officially confirmed, but the three cylinder diesel is ending production for all models by the end of next year at the latest, it doesn't meet the Euro 6D emissions requirements.

The fact that they are ending the 3 cylinder is probably why they've stopped production of the i8 also.

are the three cylinder engines not widely used in the mini?
It appears all the downsizing of engines that was prevalent for a few years is now being reversed, going back to bigger less stressed powertrains.

Sales went through the floor when McScroatface bought one :pac:

I think the i8 has been a bit of a sales flop as people spending that much money want more than 1.5 litres. BMW themselves are bringing out bigger engine hybrids in the x5 and 5 series and if they replace the i8 I bet this is the way they will go. The car has super car looks but the tech has been overtaken very quickly.

Yeah they had a concept car last summer that gave an idea of what an i8 successor would be. It was a 4 cylinder hybrid with 600hp. I think that kind of power is a lot more suitable for what they're trying to sell, would be nice to see a range topping BMW hybrid with a 6 cylinder though.

I think it will be kept for the Mini and possibly some of the front wheel drive cars, but only petrol engines. They will continue to have their uses for plug-in cars on the front wheel drive platform for the foreseeable future. But they are going back to four cylinders even on the entry level models, as the new 318i shows (thank God).

There will definitely not be any more three cylinder diesels, even on the MINI, and quite soon, too.

On a less positive note, the quad turbo straight six diesel (as found in the M50d X5, X6 and X7, as well as the left hand drive only M550d and 750d) is also facing the chop; with the backlash against diesel, and the need to comply with the EU's CO2 emissions rules, the engine no longer makes sense, so a 40d will soon be the best you can get for a diesel. A real pity because it was a phenomenal engineering achievement and it produced astonishing levels of power for its size and it could rev to an extraordinary (for a diesel) 5,500 rpm, so I'm sad it's being ditched, bit of an odd thing when you consider that Audi decided to make the S4 and S6 diesel instead of petrol (for Europe, the rest of the world still uses petrol for these models).

The oxide grey is a lovely colour in the car. Goes well with the cerium grey mirrors and wheels. I’m not keen on the black pack you can get alternatively.

Normally I hate red leather and when looking for cars if I see it I just close the add. However with the contrasting black down the side of the seats it’s a little more bearable, still don’t think I could buy one with it.

But this is a super car to drive and would love to have this instead of the wife’s Tiguan as our 2nd car!!! 😂😂

The cognac leather seats actually look much better in the flesh. I have to say I like it, but it only goes with certain exterior colours.

That 340i for sale in morrisons doesn't have the m sport plus pack so straight away I wouldn't touch it.

There is no m sport plus pack available with the m340i as far as I know. That car in Morissons has premium pack and technology pack. I think it needs privacy glass especially with it being an estate and visibility pack would complete it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,446 ✭✭✭Wailin

Ah, you're correct. I thought with no privacy glass it didn't have m sport plus. So it's the shadow line pack it needs which also comes with black grills, black mirror caps and sun protection glass.

It definitely needs the darker glass as you say.

I just went to the build configuration and went with exact same spec plus vis, tech and shadow line packs and it's cheaper than the one in morrisons. Does it have other options not listed?

The configuration prices aren’t correct for options on any of the cars at the moment. I was playing around with it when getting quotes a few weeks back and the numbers for options and option packs are wrong. They seem to only have vat added but not the vrt. Also the Morissons price includes delivery, paint protection and service pack as far as I can remember.
I have a feeling that car will sit a while without substantial discounts. I wouldn’t be surprised if they reg it themselves and run it for a while to write down the value of it. The person that buys a car like a m340i is generally very spec conscious in my view and knows what they want and will want to have the car exactly as suits.

Mad money alright but a M3 is going to be 100k plus before options and this car is as fast in the real world and probably more comfortable and practical.
I think most of us would be waiting a couple of years for depreciation to kick in anyway.

They only seem to depreciate when your selling, not when your buying....

You will have to do a review for us of the Tesla when you get it or give Mark a loan of it for a video review.

    How much was a 335i in 2007?

I know it's a class up but I had a 530i e39 sport that was 75k new and it was a 2001. It was always easy to spec up a BMW to big money. And putting a 40i engine in it is certainly speccing up. They're not meant to be mass market cars at all. I saw a 520d in Joe Duffy last year for 80k.

And 75 grand to spend on a car at 25, love it.
BMW’s are mad money with a few extras, I’ve a 435d that’s about €85,000 if you ordered one today with all the extras included. That’s why high spec BMW’s here are all in from the UK, the discounts available there are massive. BMW UK are giving up to 20 grand off on some cars at present.

Without being too personal, what were you doing at age 25 that you could afford to drop 75k on a car?!

It does put today’s 80k m340i into context though.
