BMW are renowned for it, some things never change.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,597 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Why give it away for free when they can get customers to pay extra for it? Have the HK system in my current F10 and had it in my last one. Wouldn't buy another BMW without it.

    Quinn's have a G30 540i M Sport but it's savage money.

I've no experience with the g30 or 530i in particular but a I can't imagine a 2l turbo would suit it. How was it?

Traffic was heavy enough. Feels lighter than a diesel for starters. Had plenty of poke for the one chance I got to open her a tad.

Would you all go 530d over one?

    I'd go 530d.
    What bhp is the 530i
probably feel similar to 330e poke wise.
Have you advertised the 640d to sell private?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,279 ✭✭✭commited

    Have you considered a 530e?

    This has HK:
    http://usedcars.bmw.co.uk/vehicle/201805186645149?quoteref=2ddac58e-6661-44d4-b1a5-20338b1630e7
Works out around €46.5k landed & VRT'd here. Not a bad deal for a 6 month old car.

Considering the change in attitude towards diesel, I would be leaning towards a petrol/hybrid option. Obviously the 540i is the choice but money doesn't grow on trees!

I'd say it will be a while before this segment moves away entirely from diesel. OP would also have to shift his fairly high value existing car privately.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,398 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

Yeah the value is in the UK without doubt, but shifting a valuable car privately is not straightforward. A lot of customers when buying need the finance and trade in options a dealer offers. You could ask a dealer/trader to sell it on your behalf. I did this last year, in fairness with a lesser car than the 6 but it shifted in no time when it came from the dealers forecourt. Some high end independent specialists like beshoff might be worth a shout.

She's up on Carzone. If it sells, it sells, I can well afford to wait until Jan 2019.

It was nice and calm in traffic, didn't have that little bit of lag you can get with a diesel before she shifts (even the 640 does it a bit). I haven't driven a 530d at all. No straight six hum though.

Got figures back, if I can shift mine privately I think I'll go for one of them, the trade in is just hurting a tiny bit.

Except for rear doors, what does the 5 have going for it over your 6 series?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,518 ✭✭✭MarkN

Few modern twists on gadgets, cheaper insurance, more rear space for baby seats (plus the doors obviously) and a fresher car. I also really lust after them everytime I see a nice one on the road. Is there anything wrong with my car though, no! :o

252hp in the 530i compared to 265hp in the 530d. Nothing in it but 530d torque would feel very different.

530i would be ideal if the mileage is not in diesel territory. Lighter car too although minus the smooth 6 cylinders. That car doesn't have the M sport plus pack so minus the HK speakers, 20" wheels and rear spoiler. A must in my opinion.

If doing plenty urban driving I'd take the 530i in a heartbeat over a 530d.

I must say, I don't see how one could lust after a 5 series. Sure it's a handsome enough car - but it's hardly a head turner is it? It's a handsome but quite generic looking saloon imo, although I did quite like driving the one I had for the few days I had one. Head on, its not even what you could call good looking. It really needs the black grills, more so than any other BMW... the silver grills look huuuuge...

Your 6 series is a far far more imposing / impressive car!

It definitely looks bigger than it needs to be and the back exhausts are a bit hideous, like they stuck on bits for fun. The interior kills it for me that tablet sticking up is going to age that car very rapidly, by the looks of the new 3 series they've scrapped it and are trying something Mercedes'ish with having the clocks and tablet at the same height. A step in the right direction but still not as slick looking as it's competitors.

Ya the “tablet” on top of the dash is big. Quite a bit bigger than the one in my 4 series but it’s identical in terms of software / operation. I’m surprised they didn’t make it fold away / appear out of the dash on startup like Audi do in some models.
Only difference that I noticed from my own really is it’s touch screen on the 5 which seemed completely pointless as it’s a bit too far for comfort to reach to touch and the iDrive knob is so much easier to use than any touch screen.

Audi have it nailed especially in the 2019 A6, the 2 tablet set up looks great, really slick looking in the range rover velar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,917 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

I'd put that new audi cockpit at the top of the bunch, the Mercedes e class with the full glass cockpit is excellent too while the e class with the base spec is disappointing inside. The BMW 5 is pretty slick but a bit more traditional.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,101 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

Traditional? I don't know how it made it into the new 5 series. There was nothing wrong with the F10 set up, simply changing it to an OLED screen would have been sufficient.

I don't think the new A6 has the bottom screen which controls ventilation, etc as standard. It's reserved for the options list. The G30 also has the option of gesture control so you don't have to touch the screen, a bit gimmicky but you get the idea. I prefer to retail some buttons anyway such as the climate control. Nothing worse that having to be fiddling through menus just to change the temperature or switch on the a/c. The Volvo S90 is notorious for that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,101 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

We've an XC90 as the family wagon give me no screens just dials and buttons anyday, the screen failed for nearly 24hrs recently on a family holiday, no Speedo, no radio, no A/C, a complete balls of a set up, could still drive but no use of anything besides the pedals and steering wheel.
Just needed a software update according to Volvo...my ass no doubt I'll be back for another software update when it happens again.
Besides that it's a master family wagon that looks great.

I agree with you on this. It's a bit of a grower though. I really resented how less masculine and how sleeker it looks compared to the F10. But I saw a carbon black one the other day with the black grills, m sport aerodynamic pack and LED adaptive lights and it was definitely a head turner. But with standard features It's a very non descript look. Especially in that awful bluestone colour that seems to be very popular. If I was going for one it'd have to be one of the dark colours (carbon black, sophisto grey etc) with the black grills. And M sport plus of course with the upgraded brakes along with the other stuff.

I get you. I understand the feeling when the urge to change car comes even though your own car is perfectly fine.
I’m delighted to have moved to the 5( as is my back and hip which has improved no end).
They’re super cars but what makes it for me are the extra features on it. I love comfort access and head up display. I even use gesture control a bit. Little things like the steering wheel rising when you exit and returning to memory position when you turn the car on and other little bits. I reckon if you go from your spec heavy 6 to a 5 lacking these things you will soon be on the hunt again. My advice therefore would be to wait until you can get the best spec you can. There are loads of 5 series coming up for sale now so don’t do a deal on one just for the sake of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,518 ✭✭✭MarkN

I hear you. The 530i doesn’t have the performance but it has a lot of the other stuff, HUD, gesture, wireless charging, damper control, a boot spoiler I could arrange.

I’ve had a bit of interest in the 6 already so my dilemma is do I let that go anyway and just be on the lookout.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,825 ✭✭✭carsfan2

This thread comes back to life every couple of months when you test drive or spot something you’re interested in. That shows to me that you’re serious about changing and why not if cars are your thing?
Therefore if you’ve gone to the trouble of putting it up for sale and if someone comes along with the right money to let you do something yourself, let it go I’d say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,597 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Unfortunately it may all come down to timing. You could have interest in your car now and sell it but end up in the wrong car for the sake of it. Or else turn away the interest because there is nothing really out there to properly replace it only for when something pops up then the interest in your own car falls off a cliff meaning your stuck or take the hit on the trade in. The other possibility is to go ahead with the sale of the 640d and buy a cheap runaround car to see you over until the next right car turns up?

If you can sell your own here is going to the UK an option Mark, Bavaria in Belfast also take southern trade-ins. You will probably get less for your car but overall the deal might be still better than down here.

Just browsing autotrader there and this stunning 540i popped up. I'd say it must have been a BMW UK car given the spec on it:

Some spec on it alright bazz. Look at the price compared to the one in Quinns! Only let down for me is the chrome finish on the windows.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,597 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Yeah but you could probably get that wrapped.

Would an Audi a6 Quattro 3.0 be worth a testdrive. I think the estate are good looking cars, altho they are rare enough nearly new
