I walked into a main dealer a few months ago with no trade in, said I want one of them and i've 50k to spend today. Can you do anything for me i'd like an X but open to suggestions, I was told no. (this garage has hundreds of cars in stock, didn't even bother showing me anything).
Now there the nearest main dealer to service the car I bought up the road with the money.
The young lads are useless salesmen from what I can see, the older the guy the better to deal with.

This happened a few months ago? No offence but you just admitted you are in no rush to buy a car and haven’t bought any since you dropped in and spoke to this salesman. Maybe he gets that vibe from you that you are not a serious buyer.

Car salesmen see a huge amount of time wasters each and everyday and can tell them as soon as they walk through the door.

Surely a good sales man would treat everyone seriously though?
You might not buy today but you might some day, and you will tell your friends and family if you’re dealt with badly.

Back to Markn and the 520 though I am guessing you will have to call back again to be taken seriously.
If you want one though would you not contact beshoffs where you got the 6 series and ask them to source one for you?

Yea we've 2 cars in the house. Bought an XC90 d5 for the family. It's usually just me in the 530.
    Certainly not a time waster.

Not how I’ve ever bought cars in the past, not going to suddenly start chasing sales people now.

Saw a beautiful 6 series coupe on the m50 today. It took me 2 hours to go 20km from work to home and I saw this car loads of times as we passed each other at crawling speeds.
White, black coated wheels which looked like 20s. Seriously impressive car.

I hear this all the time and no doubt there is truth in it however taking drunkmonkey at face value, he has cash and is looking.
I therefore believe it is a salesmans job to sell a car to exactly that type of client .... The type who is browsing and very much open to being sold a car.
Salesmen seem to take the easy out by calling everyone who isn't begging them for a car a time waster.
They probably see me in a similar fashion but I will buy the right car at a price that suits.
For what it's worth, I find the dealers are more time wasters than anyone.
For example telling me to my face that they will do me a serious deal on a pre reg BMW 330e. The fantastic deal was 1K more than a brand new one after grants.
When I point this out, guy walks away saying he will get the finance specialist to explain.
They then came up with finance figures significantly more costly than a new one.
When I said I wouldn't be interested in the pre reg at that price, the finance lady vanished never to be seen again.... no doubt I was the time waster.

We literally used to be fighting with each other to get out to the customer first, one of the guys thought he was Steve Irwin, you'd be getting near someone and up he'd pop from behind a car after sneaking up through the lot.
We had great training and and a big sales team, doubt there was any garage in Dublin selling as much as us. Everyone got a call back if you did't close it there and then.

I often wondered how salesmen work in terms of splitting up customers.
Why do they not all want to approach any given customer to grab a sale?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,101 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

Any salesperson worth their salt wouldn't be splitting up customers that applies in any sales job not just motortrade. It's all commission, handing away a sale is like giving away cash.

Drunkmonkey, were you selling a premium brand and why did you give it up?

Everything and anything it was a car supermarket, all 3yrs old or newer for finance reasons, Just something I wanted to try for a while then moved on, was bored senseless working in an office and didn't want to go back to one when I came back from travelling. It had nothing to do with my qualifications. Money was good and a great bunch of lads to work with really enjoyed it.

I used to sell financial products like pensions and life insurance. Sales were hard to come by I had to generate interest in people and chase them. That was the industry norm. I was self employed.
A few of us doing the same job rented a shared office and had 2 shared admin people following leads we had generated ourselves.
It never once happened, but if someone walked in off the street and wanted to have a chat with an advisor, there would have been an almighty scramble to talk to them. A sale would have been the difference between making 1000 quid that week or making nothing!

How are salesmen in main dealers remunerated? I was in Joe Duffy and Frank Keane recently looking at cars in the 40k range. No enthusiasm for either salesman I dealt with to even attempt to deal. They'd do the minimum. In both garages I had to ask receptionist to get someone to come over to me even though there were plenty sitting around on their computers. I think they saw my current car which is an 06 e60 worth 3 grand on a good day and thought I wasn't serious. If they made me feel like they were trying their best and didn't tell me lies about some things I might have bought.

Different times, just like estate agents or auctioneers the Celtic Tiger raised a different type of salesperson where they became order takers. With the economy on the up, people having money and credit easier to get again the same pattern seems to have set in.

I'd say there only feeders for the "finance directors" right now. That was the impression I got from BMW the last time, once they knew I was serious the real sales guys took over.
Come to think of it the Volvo guy asked was I financing and I said no, that's probably when he thought this guy is having a laugh driving in a battered x3 and wanting to spend a load or cash.

I was in Morrisons BMW in Cahir about a year ago picking up a part for my car and I was chatting to the receptionist about an M2 they had outside the door. Despite my telling her I had no interest (nor the money) to buy it, she got one of the sales guys out to me so I could take it for a spin.

I again told him that I just love cars (especially M cars) and that I had no interest or money to buy the M2 but he still treated me as though I did. We sat down for a coffee, chatted about the car and eventually I went for a blast in it.

My point is that despite them knowing I was there for a set of wipers, they treated me as though I was there for an M2 :D

It was Morrisons I was referring to above and it was a 535d. Maybe there just a good garage. Sorry I didn't ask about the rs3 they had down there the last time. Really want to give one of them a blast.

The other way to look at that is you arrived in a nice car so there may be a chance as you progress in life the day may come when an M2 is an affordable option for you. Now who are you going to call to buy it?

Ya very true. Most of them can't see beyond their next sale though.

That RS3 used belong to the head chef in Chez Hans. It was stolen from him and when he got it back he traded it in to them for a 430d.

This is true! I won't have 82k to spend on a car until I sell my house.....in about 30 years time :pac:

Who am I going to call??? ///MBusters!!!

    Was it stolen in Cashel?

It was stolen from his house I think. I don't know where he lives but they left everything in the house and just took the keys of the RS3.

    Yikes
That car's been there for sale a fairly long while now. Nothing like a couple of hoodlums in masks showing up at your front door to scare you into buying a sensible diesel...

Edit: seems to be gone off carzone now, so maybe it was eventually sold...

When working in the garage we had a few cars stolen at different times, all high performance, Impreza's etc. One of them was used on a job.
You'd need something very quick to escape the law these days if there on your tail. They'd probably struggle to hold into you in a 335d.

26k for yours against sticker price. Genuine enough offer.

No the Med blue one I put up. If I can move mine privately I’ll give it serious consideration.

It wasn't a bad throw just going on the sticker price.

That’s a better offer than I expected. Fair enough deal.
Did they come back to you?

Yep. My car took a bit of homework he said, fair enough. There’s another one after popping up in Spirit Sandyford today so I might fly over tomorrow. There is a niggle in the back of my head saying buy petrol though, hard to know the state of play with diesel in a couple of years, my head says a 520d will always sell but at what price...!

I’m about €1500-2000 in the red with my car whatever way the figures are pitched.
