A decent spec Golf R went up on donedeal Monday in Sligo, 2015 car, nice spec on it, leather, pan roof, DSG, dynaudio, custom exhaust. €30k. They had a deposit on it in less than an hour.

Still tons of interest out there for quick ice cars and I doubt that will change for awhile yet, even the bigger 3L stuff. Good to see.

Someone jokingly posted back about turning this thread into an ev appreciation thread. Let's not! It's one of the only threads I bother popping into because it was always about interesting and rare enough cars. Let's keep it that way please, there's enough EV threads as is!

True, all we need is for the fuel prices to settle again and i'll be happy enough with my 30mpg!

1st Drive BMW M440i Gran Coupe xDrive - Not my cup of tea | 4K - YouTube

Joe Achilles not falling for the new BMW 4 series gran Coupe. Surprising.

is it not just a thread where people who are thinking of changing come to? there are more EV options than there were, so it will be a factor now.

I'd agree with his criticisms... the looks... nowhere near as striking and handsome as the previous generation was in its day. And the drawbacks of that previous car (pretty tight rear seat access) still remain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,446 ✭✭✭Wailin

I'd much prefer this over the 4 GC, though the GC does have huge luggage capacity. Side and rear profile of the 4GC looks almost exactly like a scaled up version of the 2GC, an ugly car in itself, even without the controversial front.

I've the old generation 4 GC and the rear doors are very small making access to the rear challenging for anyone over 5ft 7". Once your in it's snug. The boot is large though and being a hatch it's very practical. You don't buy these cars for transporting many people though but Audi manage to do a bit better for rear passengers with their A5 SB.

Disappointing that they didn't address the rear practicality of the new generation 4 GC, that and the ugly lung grill don't make it a very attractive proposition especially when it costs a premium. Odd too that they fitted the current 3 Series dashboard to the new 4 GC when the i4 will get the newer full screen dashboard early next year when it and the facelifted 3 Series arrives. They did the same with the ix3 and x3, they launched the new ix3 recently based on the current pre facelift x3 yet the facelift model will arrive in the new year.

Theres a 2 series after appearing a few houses up from me, not a nice looking car at all I said to myself as I walked past it today. First time I'd seen one up close apart from videos. Watched Joe Achilles there and you ate right it very much looks 2 series like. Not even scaled up by much. Not a looker at all, the old rgc is a handsome car. For Joe Achilles not to like it it must have serious drawbacks

BMW have lost the plot with their latest designs. The 2 series GC is hideous it’s not alone

I almost bought an R in 2015, they were €52k, but spent €4k more and got a BMW 4gc instead. The 4gc is worth about €22/24k today. at the time I thought the R would be the one with higher depreciation!

re the 4gc posts above, i love mine, absolutely love it. It was the best looking car in the bmw line up in 2015 IMHO, and half the price of the 6gc. I don’t think I ever had adults in the back, but have kids in the back every day. the boot is 490L, 10L less than my old e61. Not a penny spent on the car in 100,000km bar a set of tyres at 75,000, not even wiper blades.

id probably look at the i4 as a replacement more so than the new 4gc, but as the kids get older and bigger, it might well be a Touring :)

A set of tyres in 100k??

Be lucky if a pair of fronts get 35k

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,818 ✭✭✭carsfan2

Current 4 series is a great looking car in my view. I will reserve judgement on the new one until I see it in the metal.

dealer has me down for a drive in the i4 when they arrive so will see it then.

I like Joe’s reviews but don’t agree with everything he puts out and also some BMW designs look better after time passes. Although I agree with others and cannot see the appeal of the 2series gran coupe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,129 ✭✭✭sk8board

Rears at 70k and fronts at 90k. My e61 melted tyres every 20-25k, so I always kept an eye on the thread depth all across the tyre, and honestly I couldn’t believe it. They were down to just above the markers in both cases and very much still legal, but I changed them coming into winter. Bridgestones I think, €350/corner

I think the last section of this review comparing the m440i to the i4 pretty much encapsulates what we have been saying here about where we are in the new car market.

Same as. Tbf the rear once inside is OK. It's the having to get in arse 1st, reverse birth style, is the pain. That is a symptom of 4 door BMW coupes in fairness. Ours sits beside an X6 on the driveway at the moment and that also has the get in arse first to avoid hitting your head issue too. Worse again is putting a small person in to ours a carseat. You will do well not to hit the child's head, never mind your own. However the boot is huge. The electric tailgate is a godsend also.

non M Sport 440i just gone up for sale:

Would be interesting to know what that was traded in for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,129 ✭✭✭sk8board

It’s like the old merc s500 SE from the 90’s - very much overpowered engine for such a base spec.

I can’t remember what the mSport plus cost was when I got mine, but I think it was €5k.

€50k feels expensive for it, being almost 3 years old, but I suppose every 2nd hand car is expensive at the mo.

    still the owner would’ve lost €35k+ in 2-3yrs, to do 28,000km 😳.

Wonder was it an Embassy car, seen a few 3.0L petrol BMWs before that had the luxury spec that were Embassy cars

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,129 ✭✭✭sk8board

Embassy cars tend to be saloons and in particular Li’s.

you wouldn’t be buying a 4 series if you needed to have adults in the back as a requirement

I won't call it base spec but it is an odd spec. It's got the full adaptive LED headlights, upgraded Merino leather sport seats, H/K sound system. It doesn't have heated front seats though which is odd given they are standard on all of them here for years.

I wonder did an expat bring it home with them?

Tiny screen and old analogue dash for such a new car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,818 ✭✭✭carsfan2

    Used 2019 (191) BMW 4 Series 440 F36 I GRAN COUPE 4DR A in Tipperary (carzone.ie)

They are looking for 50k for it. Low mileage but I wouldn't buy a non msport 4 series.

A very strange spec on it.Tanzanite blue premium paint, Sunroof and no heated seats. Merino leather and extended leather on the dash!

the speedo is in km I think.

Previously I would have thought it would sit on the forecourt for months but now, it'll probably be sold in a few days!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,446 ✭✭✭Wailin

I'd be surprised if that sells quickly, not a very desirable spec at all without the m sport trim. It would be a nice sleeper I suppose if debadged.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,595 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

It's a model that was launched back in 2012 when big oversized iPad style screens and video game digital dials were not a thing. Audi will sell you a brand new car now that still has analog dials too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,818 ✭✭✭carsfan2

If you dechromed the trim and added a black grille it would look a lot better.

I think you can retrofit heated seats too if that’s an issue.

I would love to know the history of that car and who owned it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,129 ✭✭✭sk8board

Same here. As someone who was far too anal about spec’ing mine new, I can’t imagine spec’ing this.

the Luxury option, plus sunroof, plus the €80-85k price, plus the 3.0L petrol - strikes me as an older driver. in mSport spec there’s no doubt the looks are more aggressive, for it’s day, which was clearly a turnoff for this buyer.

if a 4gc could come in sleeper spec, this would be it :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,818 ✭✭✭carsfan2

I agree that it points to an older driver with that spec.

The supplying dealer should have advised to get m sport though as it’s almost negligent not to at this level.

if that car was m sport it would sell in no time.

Another 440i from the same dealer:

I wonder what they’re looking for?

it’s not on Carzone yet but I’ll guesstimate 39k.
