I’ve no doubt it’s impressive but lots of cars are very impressive but not really much fun.

It's an overall package most people are after , an mx5 is more fun than a 540 , maybe the fast Alfa Giulia is also, but you won't see many !

There may be a few diehards that prefer the 440 but they will pay a big financial cost for it.

Well if you really enjoy a car then you tend to have no real good reason to part with it, unless your given an offer you simply cannot refuse. However for some of these guys it seems the car didn't live up to the expectation that was set when ordering it. For others it's just another toy that they get bored with very quickly. Not suggesting there is anything wrong with that, it's their money and they can spend it how they like. I just get the feeling an i4 m50 will be the same story for them in 12 months time.

Perhaps but there are plenty who act in the same way with ice cars , I have done it myself in the past so I wouldn't criticize, but i don't think it's an EV owner phenomenon or a reflection on how people enjoy their cars personally.

Possibly sell off market for much less perhaps - maybe someone shopping an i4 m50.

we’ve had this circular conversation here on Boards for years - spending €90k on a 440i is a very ‘individual’ decision that’ll cost €20-30k the day you sign the paperwork, but if they aren’t bought new by someone, then they won’t be available second hand.

however, EVs have changed that imho - e.g there have been zero Porsche 911’s bought in Ireland now that the taycan has arrived, (and it’s sold about 100??). there will also almost certainly be no-one spending €140k on a BMW m3/4 comp while the i4 m50 is €78k.

These big engine petrol cars have never really been bought new in Ireland by petrolheads - they’re bought by wealthier people who want a ‘sports car’. They’re not fools either. Given the choice they’ll pick cars like the i4 m50, tesla, Audi etron GT, or the taycan all day long.

They are still selling 911s, just not as many. My cousin bought a brand new 911 Targa this year. He traded in a Panamera Hybrid but had no interest in a Taycan. He has a RR Vogue for the daily duties so the 911 is only a weekend or special occasion car. There's still plenty out there who can afford to buy cars like that but they aren't in the market for M440is.

If boards is anything to go by, short term future is majority electric, only place with any traffic on motoring forum is in the EV subforum.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,560 ✭✭✭JoeA3

To be honest, having lurked in and out of a few threads in there, it doesn't "feel" like a motoring sub-forum to me. A large dose of generalisation here but the vast majority of the posters are not "car guys". They're buying appliances.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,550 ✭✭✭Buddy Bubs

Yep, but they are buying. Or trying to at least. Crazy waits

He didn’t mention but Mark looked like he was off to a wedding in the Kia ev review.

Plenty of car guys there and you'll all be joining soon enough ;)

That's what you hope! But I can guarantee you I, for one, won't be going ev for a long while yet. I actually don't know anyone driving an EV, I see the odd one on the road, and obviously on boards there's fanatics. But I know of not one person that owns one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,821 ✭✭✭carsfan2

Most people that I know that have bought new in the last year or so have gotten either electric or plug in hybrid. I see a fair few id4’s on the road. They’re definitely taking over from the Tiguan in the urban jungle.

having test driven a Tesla model3 performance and the new Hyundai ioniq 5, I definitely see the appeal.

also the way the government has changed vrt and will continue to penalise combustion engine cars, financially the electric vehicles make sense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,832 ✭✭✭maddness

A few of of my friends have bought electric cars and none of them have any interest in cars. It’s an appliance, nothing more.

I will only choose electric over a petrol car when I have no choice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,550 ✭✭✭Buddy Bubs

I think my next 2 cars will still be either ICE only or PHEV. But my reason is that I'm going to take advantage of the inflection point where they are so out of fashion and a few probably minor tax disincentives make them available for peanuts. Like the pre 08 petrol stuff I used to buy, great cars for very little.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,903 ✭✭✭hooch-85

In my family situation it will always be a requirement to be a two car household. In that regard I would have no issue changing the family vehicle for electric as long as it was affordable overall, taking net fuel savings into account we probably could afford to change to one next year, but I don't know if we will yet.

As long as I can keep a second car it will be ICE until I'm forced the get rid of it. I think we should really enjoy them while we can.

Electric range overwhelmingly mid size SUV which lends itself to the appliance argument and I tend to agree. But the mid size ICE SUV are appliances really too aren't they? They don't exactly get any petrol heads pulse racing and I don't like them myself.

Sticking with what I know and like, the Germans, theres nice electric stuff coming down the track, bmw i4 out now so Mercedes and audi will respond, it won't be long before the cars that are talked about in this thread have an electric equivalent.

Audi A6 etron announced and out relatively soon along with Mercedes EQ range so bmw will have their 5 series along soon. Will the 3 and 5 series have another brand new ICE model? I doubt it. Don't know what they'll call the electric 3 series, we've had an i3 already but I'd say they'd like to keep 3 designation. But then again, vw have at least temporarily seem to plan to discontinue the golf name, equally as iconic a brand.

There's the etron gt and taycan at the higher sporty end. One area I do see problems in is the traveling sales rep who does big miles every day but I also see this method of work dying out too, many sales rep jobs can be done on line or much less frequent visits, the world is changing.

We can continue driving nice ICE cars with reg plates up to 2023 maybe 2024 for as long as you're happy to have an older reg, but if you want newish stuff after that you're going to be looking at electric. Personally the older reg plates don't bother me much if it's a nice car so could see myself happily driving ICE up to 2030 anyway.

Funny since the update on boards I rarely come on but thought I'd check this thread as I've found myself looking at what's available out there in EV land, and the chat in here is about EVs too. I'm thinking my next step would be into an ev now. The idea of just wafting about in comfort, auto, instant torque, no start stop non sense of sitting idling in traffic now appeals more and more to me....I'm getting old, and I think I'm after an appliance. The Kia/Hyundai/Skoda EVs all look brilliant in fairness, and hard to argue against what they offer.

Same as that, never bother posting much anymore. I'm moving back to Ireland in about 8 months (unless wife and I change our minds) and I am looking at cars ireland daily as I will need a new car. I can't see any realistic option but hybrid at the very least. A diesel more than likely won't be even considered. My top 3 requirements are heated seats, waftiness and something frugal. I'll have my 323i to be stupid in. A cheap to tax appliance will help me justify the E36.

Not sure why you think id hope that, it has nothing to do with hope, i couldnt care less personally, its the way of the world, you can rail against it if you want, but its a futile exercise.

THe way the i4m50 makes a 440i redundant will happen more and more.

Im not saying i am happy about it im just a realist.

I drove the M440i linked above, it’s a beautiful car and very well speced. Sounds great when you put the floor down, and tons of power.

I would love to own one but when a 2nd hand one costs more than a new fully loaded i4 m50 then for me it’s an easy enough choice.

In saying that though I wouldn’t be surprised if the M440i is worth more than the m50 in 3 years time just because they will be so rare and will be attractive to enthusiasts.

If I could afford a 3rd car and park it somewhere I would love to get an M340i.

I’ve been into cars since I was a teenager and always had petrol cars until I traded in my 99 golf gti for a new Audi A4 tdi 130 as diesel performance was the coming thing then! Had a string of diesels after and then petrol and now hybrid cars.

Electric is just the new energy source of propulsion for now. Maybe it’ll be hydrogen next?

my point is we can all be car enthusiasts regardless of the power source.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,550 ✭✭✭Buddy Bubs

Remember the petrol v diesel arguments? They were great craic!

Just replaced by ICE v PHEV v BEV now really.

I still think I'll be a slow adopter of EV. Not that I've any problems with them, but there's a few things out now in ICE that i think will tank in value soon. Nothing m3 or the like, more 3 litre 30d bmws and quattro Audis. But who knows, I'll keep an eye out.

It took me until 2018 to buy a diesel, because I had to really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,447 ✭✭✭Wailin

Just to point out, I was talking about EV's, not PHEV's. I know plenty who drive hybrids. I almost bought a nice 330e before going with the current car. My next car, whenever I change, will be a hybrid, no doubt. 330e/530e or the like. I just do not like the thought of an EV and having to plan your route via charge points if travelling around the country. The convenience of fill and forget is something we take for granted.

Can these be bought? And are they really that cheap in Ireland?

    Ah edit....

    It's a commercial

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,518 ✭✭✭MarkN

Yeah commercial only and if you're over even 5 10 you'll struggle as the seat can only go back so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,821 ✭✭✭carsfan2

Did you have any interest at the time in the m440i or just enjoying yourself?

it is very difficult in the current climate to justify a car that’s more expensive to buy and run over a cheaper electric alternative.

I get what you say about holding value but I’m not convinced. The m440i is always going to have higher daily costs than the norm and even when it’s a few years older will still incur high tax, insurance, service costs and fuel bills unfortunately.

I drove the m440i as I wanted to get a feel for the msport seats and also make a decision on the interior. Cognac was a bit overwhelming for me in the end, having it as part of the underside of the dash was just too much for me so when I seen the black and blue stitching of the m440i I was happy enough with that.

I also decided against the tanzanite blue as it just looked so dull on that car I though and from the front the m440i and i4 m50 look pretty much the same. The m440i had black ally’s which I never like and that might have made me like it even less. I’ve seen tanzanite blue on loads of x5 and I really like it but it just didn’t look that great to me on the 4 series.

So in the end went with Portmaio blue which I always thought looked good on any 3 or 4 series I’ve seen. It will probably be common enough but that doesn’t bother me. A few photos below from the configurator, I didn’t change the cognac to black when I screenshot these but gives a good idea what it will look like. Can’t wait for it now!!
