We had 2080mm of rain in Castlebar this year, making it the wettest in 50 years that I have records on, so it is possibly longer, with nearly 650mm falling in the last two months.

    Holy sh#t

Only October and June registered below 120mm for the month, our summer had 360mm of rain and an average temp of only 13.6c.

I think he's wrong. This block is only temporary and Joe is latching onto the hype over the warming up there. I've lost faith in him of late, he's becoming more and more tabloid by the day.

For the snow sanity of the boards weather fans i hope we get some snow in January, so i hope he,s right. But its true he has become main stream.:)

Joan Burton and Ann Phelan go for a swim in the floods in Thomastown.

The water would be too cold for me.

The words of the Sinatra song spring to mind......"yes, there were a few, but then again, too few to mention" :)

Monthly rain total here stands at 237.2mm (and there are some cold showers still about). Not much compared with many areas - but still over 300% of average.

    No is the answer
Rainfall totals that meet warning thresholds will trigger the warning alerts,of course
They'd do so in summer also
My point is hills are saturated so events like last night are an accumulated problem at this stage far exceeding what those warnings are designed for
To diss comments suggesting such is to mis understand weather
    It's basic geography
We need standardised flood level warning systems like those in the UK

I read that the Taoiseach has announced a "long term Forecast" project to be run by Met Eireann in conjunction with OPW.

If I recall correctly, following the severe flooding of a decade ago various flood studies and projects were set up , run primarily by OPW.

There was some work done on flood forecasting, including some advice/help from an Australian expert but OPW seemed to disregard/ignore anything that did not fit in with their "hard engineering" solutions or solutions over which they did not have absolute control.

I wonder will it be any different this time?
