So do we all agree Conor needs to go up to lightweight?

Weight cut seems to be killing him for 145. 155 would be much safer & a bit more comfortable for him.

    What you all think?

Great night tho. I was preparing for sleep but not a chance now.

Will we see Rory at the press conference? Not sure I can stomach Robbies lip again to be honest! Looked like the joker.

I still remember watching his knockout of Brimage just over two years ago.

Incredible to think that in just two years at the highest level, he's the interim champion of the division.

Proud and emotional, it's a great night to be Irish.

This is how you know someone has actually watched an MMA fight before. "It shouldn't have been stopped" stfu.

McGregor essentially knocked him out with his last left. When you get rocked like that you can't defend yourself. He curled up but if the fight continued Mendes could be looking at brain damage, or at the least broken bones around the skull. Herb was completely right to stop the fight. You ensure a fighters safety over everything else.

Now to sherdog to enjoy the ****storm

Holy God am almost in tears, some may laugh but I haven't been this emotionally invested since Italia 90.

Conor was nervous going into the ring tonight.
    No question.
    But he held his nerve.
    And he did us proud.
The other fights on the card were amazing.
    Great nights entertainment.
Still wish I had a girlfriend all the same.....:pac:

i thought it should have went another round, so close to the end of that one and mendes wasn't knockedout, he was in his knees defending himself but that ref just stopped it. i didn't see mendes asking for it to be stopped and he wasn't at all cut up, winded, tired but mcgregor looked a wreck in all fairness like he just woke up.

mcgregor was very lucky to escape this one.

not a great fight, the one before was proper hard lol

You dont wait for a fighter to be knocked out to stop a fight, and Mendes wasnt at all defending himself. Suggest you rewatch the end of the fight and also look up what involves a stoppage over a tko.

I love Conor. But if he comes up against Khabib, he's gone imo. I assume he won't walk into a title shot.

If Conor was from barcelona, we AnsersonIsGod would have a 7 paragraph soliloquy. Dont put too much stock into what he says.

This post irked me so in my haze of annoyance I checked your post history up to 4 months ago and til tonight you'd posted nothing in the mma forum, my bet is you barely watch it, that your one of these lads whose seen a couple McGregor fights, listened to a few soundbytes and is now an expert on the subject. Who should put any stock into what you say.

I'm happy to have a debate about something mma related with people who at least know their stuff but up you pop with your little grudge and you accuse me of not knowing my stuff? Laughable.

    My take on tonights fight

Conor was lucky, was way too casual at times. His hair adjustments, taughting and general casual approach. He was taken to the mat 4 times in the 2 rounds. But his guard seemed good. But in saying that Chad didn't seem to try and go to full guard, was happy to smash elbows.

Conor escaped a few submission attempts very well, and can certainly take serious shots. He looked tired to me during his walk in too, and looked fooked after the win.

He can land serious punches and it won him the fight tonight. But I think his overly casual approach in the first minutes which lead to his split eye, could have cost him the fight tonight very easily.

The stoppage seemed fine to me, but I watch about 3-4 ufc events a year so more of a casual, big card ufc fan

I hope he does. He always looked a bit ropey at weigh ins but came out ok on the night. Tonight was the first time I thought he didn't recover well from the cut.

Someone on my facebook said you know its bad when Sinead looks healthier than you :o

I was too young for italia 90 but was only thinking earlier how I was feeling so nervous and hadn't felt this nervous about a sporting event since World Cup 2002. (My italia 90 I guess :) )

Fantastic main card. We won't talk about the prelims (besides Brown-Mean. I didn't see Seery.)

Gutted for Rory but what a bloody battle from the two. Can't have enough respect for them. Rory will be champ one day.

Conor was in trouble a lot in the fight. His take down defence is bad. He also needs to cut out the Anderson-esque show boating or he'll end up with a Weidman like KO.

Fantastic perseverance in the end though. His boxing is on another level.

    What a man.

McGregor had 100% takedown defence before tonight. Interested to see what that figure is when updated tomorrow!

Right guess I might as well make a bowl of porridge whilst waiting on press conference to start!

How long are the press conferences normally?

Happens in all sports, bandwagon spectators decide they know more than the experts, like Herb. I'd say that lad has probably never been told the actual rules of a fight.

I'd believe Conor anout the power of that left hand before i'd believe any fix sh1te.

Was genuinely worried for him there, just hoping he would hold off on the ground until the end of that round. He was on a mission when he got up though, rather than compose himself and see out the round he took full advantage of it.

The only thing I didn't like was the amount of trash talk in the ring this time, he got caught because of it and just as well that Mendes didn't have the power to take advantage of it.

Delighted for him and loved the fact he has already started the taunting of Aldo for running away.

Sometimes 25 minutes, sometimes almost an hour. I'd wager it will be the latter tonight.

Hard to believe people are suggesting the fight should have continued.

Mendes was floored and basically out on his hands and knees. Referee knew this. He couldn't stand there and allow McGregor a free for all.

3 seconds remaining in round is irrelevant. Only takes one shot to the head to me the whole night regrettable . This isn't boxing.

Pretty sure downward is considered a direction in terms of the rule, doesnt matter if you on top or the bottom. The motion is still 12-6..a downward straight motion and if you do it and make contact its illegal regardless of position.
