The more I think about the more, I know I funked this one rightly up. Really annoying, you know your not off to a good start on the numeracy test when you think 7+5=11 :pac:

It's one I know I done awful on compared to stage 1, stage 1 I was great at them, in stage 2 I was like a slug I reached around 10 with 2/3 wrong, while on the other one I think I got like 17 with one wrong :(

I showed up on the day but I left the brain half at home.

It aint over until its over.. Head up lad.

My God some people are so highly strung on particulars that are so much out of our control. I say what will be will be and be happy that you got to stage two in the first place! I am on next week and my only worries is have I done enough work. Knowing how many chairs can fit in a room on Abby street is not going to help you.

Ah thanks, but I know my future. You've to be getting 95%/100% per cent on these tests to be in the running, highly competitive exams, any mistake can be fatal, I made too many over the course of the exam unfortunately. I just hope that there is another comp so I get another run at it, juggling college exams, study and this exam along with the full time job was bound to happen. :(

Some company on Facebook offering a course that apparently WILL put you ahead of the rest for €345? Included is a physical test. Sounds fairly expensive

Is it safe to say 1000+ in order of merit is out of the race ?

I'm qualified to use a defibrillator, occupational first aid and manual handling but the likes of water awareness and working with heights I wouldn't know anything about.

You'd be better off putting your time and effort into preparing for a competancy based interview. Find someone you know with knowledge of interview techniques and get them to give you mock interviews.

You'll be given the list of competancies you need to hit when you receive notice of your interview date. They'll be the usual type of headings such as Communications, Decision making, Working as a Team etc. Putting time and effort into courses on bloody physical tests before you've even done an interview is ridiculous.

Take each step at a time

I had a post about a company doing a course on the 30th of Jan for people who are trough to the interview. It has since disappeared (I didn't delete)

Apologies if it broke rules - the date for the course being before we are expecting results was the reason for the post.

Unless you've listed a job or experience working in these areas you will not be expected to know about them. Listing a random course you attended 3 weeks before the interview is not going to be a whole lot of benefit.

There seems to be an industry developing in offering sometimes pointless "preparation" courses for the fire services.

There is a few companies advertising on youporn etc that WILL make your willy 3 inches longer. Buyer beware.

Any extra courses, providing they are legitimate, will of course be beneficial.

Hi Arruabarrena, you seem to know your stuff, will the CPAT be the same one the Americans do that you can see on youtube? If so, will it be scored or pass/fail?

I know I'm getting ahead of myself a bit, but I'd like to know if I should hit the fitness really hard, or ease off to reduce the risk of injury.

I was talking to a couple guys in the process during the week. Backgrounds are impressive. One was in the Aircorps for the last 13 years. The other was in the AFS for the last 12 years as an instructor, also had an involvement in the private ambulance sector. I have to wonder (and this is an honest hypothetical question that nobody can definitively answer) if both of these chaps went forward to interview how would a panel view them? 1) as being excellent candidates due to previous experience or 2) pass them over we are looking for blank slates to mold. Its an interesting thought.....

Not really that interesting as a thought. Why would they pass them over? they are disciplined in a similar organisation, show they work well in a team, they have experience working in a ranked, disciplined and uniformed capacity which is exactly what DFB is. I think they are ideal candidates over say a 21 year old fresh out of college who hasn't even scratched the surface on life experience.

Regards moulding people, the OBI run a tight ship and have had ex military, paramedics, builders, software engineers, pilots all go through it's doors as recruits. They will mould anyone they want. I would be more worried if I didn't have some relevant experience to bring to the table going into stage 3. Im not saying it is essential but it's definatly something to get the ball rolling and raise interest in an interview.

People with previous Defence Forces service have always done well in DFB competitions. There are many existing DFB members with previous military service. It's not that DFB targets these people or gives them extra credit. They are able to interview well as they have attributes arising from their previous experience.

Teamwork, Communication Skills, Decision making, Working under pressure etc would all be to the fore and apply to ex Defence Force personnel. They obviously also prepare well for the interview process as practice is needed in order to have the ability to get your point across in a competancy based interview.

I reitierate it again. Anyone who gets to the interview stage needs to put in time practicising their interview techniques and needs to visit some fire stations also

The CPAT test in the states is similar but over the top. Look at london fire brigade CPAT or carlow fire service i think it is on youtube (PM me if you cannot find this) . This is what you will be required to do if I remember correctly or at least very very similar. This is fact by the way not some bull**** thrown together for the craic.

Also the CPAT is a pass or fail test, you do get 1 chance to repeat any failed section but it is done straight after your failed attempt. They may give you 10/15 mins to get your head together but they wont wait around so your straight back into it.

Also on the above. If you have a general level of fitness you should be fine. The awkward part for people is running in fire gear including helmet and wellies. Overall it's doable.

Don't be fooled with people on FB doing the CPAT and you see them running for the duration of the test, you won't be running anywhere with the DFB CPAT as most sections of the CPAT are done at walking pace.

Plenty to do before even getting near a CPAT test so don't stress. focus on each stage as it comes

Jesus folks, talk about jumping the jump here. It's gone from talking about stage 2 results to interviews and now CPATS, did I miss getting my results ? LOL. Just wait on the results and take it as it comes or like me last time in the Garda competition you'll be in for a big disappointed come results time.

People will always be curious and not be familiar with a process so questions will come from all stages.

How do they test your fitness?

Megabantz, your knowledge is greatly appreciated on this forum. Please don't jack it in over above comments.

There are all types of pressure coming with this recruitment phase which are leading to people over thinking, or being seen to be over thinking.

Person A could be 34 years old and knows its his last shot, wanting to have everything in order.

Person B could be 21, relaxed and a yes or a no has no effect on his immediate future.

For each individual, it means something different. That's just how I see it.

Spent nearly half an hour today in work speaking to a member of DFB who I have known for years. Has made me want the job even more now! Couldn't give much info as anything would be merely speculation but he did say the next class (after DCC internal recruitment) should be around may. Getting impatient already waiting for these results but life goes on.
