Again, and purely hypothetically, if a player was leaving his existing club for disciplinary reasons or bad attitude, he'd want to be a serious player to be taking that gamble on.

I'm not sure Ulster have anyone who falls into that category.

It'd also require the player to want to go through with a move. Which if you're mentally checking out of the game and preparing to move on with your life (which is a rumour), seems unlikely to me.

Chris Henry has a hamstring strain and is doubtful for this weekend’s match v Connacht.

Charles Piutau has bruising on his lower leg and will miss the trip to Galway.

Rob Herring suffered a concussion against 'Quins and will follow the return to play protocols.

They join the following players on the current injured list:
    Rory Best (ankle)
    Luke Marshall (Achilles)
    Tommy Bowe (hamstring)
    Marcell Coetzee (knee)
    Johnny Simpson (wrist)
    Kyle McCall (shoulder)
    Rodney Ah You (wrist)
    Jean Deysel (neck)
    Jared Payne (headaches)

The refusal of a call-up by player unknown happened during the 2016 summer tour to South Africa when Payne (I think) got injured. A call went out to an Ulster player and he declined it. There was much speculation about who it was but it was known that it was not McCloskey (Paul is also wrong in saying everyone on boards thought it was him). It so happened that McCloskey was on hols at the Euros but it was not he who was called up.

Whoever said player is/was, he signed his own P45 that day. And rugby is a small community, no other province would ever take on such a player and I doubt any big club would do so either.

Definitely a bad move by this unknown player. Maybe they got some advice from the Ulster midfielder (was it Humphries?) that got called up from a beach in Portugal to play the third test in NZ in 2012. That would have been a painful journey :D

Fairly certain that was Paddy Wallace, no?

Saw David Nucifora and Niall O Connor having a chat in a coffee shop earlier.

    Could be nothing of course.

Was it Darren Cave's coffee shop?

I don't remember the exact details, but I don't think Paul is correct - the RWC and the Euros were on in different years, for a start. Perhaps he meant the Euro qualifiers?

But either way, I believe that he wasn't turning down a squad place, he was just invited to help the actual squad out with training.

    Yeah, he's completely confused.

Cave didn't refuse to join the RWC squad (no-one did) - he was in fact selected and travelled. Except that when the exact circumstances arose that should have seen him picked, i.e. a vacancy at 13, Joe decided to pass on him and picked Earls out of position instead.

Sorry, yes - was confused about which games it was for.

NOT confused about people saying it was McCloskey, because I was on here saying it was Cave until I was blue in the face.

I see on UAFC that the ITK guy is saying Michael Lowry will be unavailable for Ireland U20 selection as he will be required by Ulster.

    1. I doubt that Ulster would have the call
    2. From what I hear he is not going to be picked due to this injury not getting better.

Ulster would have the call. Been that way for some time. Quite often players havent been involved with 20s as been in pro14 squads

Yeah happened in 2012 with Paddy Jackson. Happens regularly with players in other countries

Apparently John Cooney got called into the Irish camp for this session. Well deserved.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,141 ✭✭✭✭Burkie1203

Nathan Hughes out for 4 months and elliot daly to see a specialist today for his ankle injury

Ulsters chances improved slightly. Thats two huge losses for Wasps.

If we're basing things purely on the past 6 months, he should be in the number 21 jersey for the 6N.

I'm not sure that's going to be the case, though.

Yeah. He's taking on massive responsibility for a nine in these parts and delivering. Hopefully he stays injury free.

Staying fit seems to have been a major issue for him in the last.

As we know form is only half the battle. He starting from a distance behind McGrath and Marmion. In all likelihood he would need 2 of those guys plus Murray to be injured to get a chance on the bench.

Who starts ahead of him if McGrath, Marmion and Murray are injured?

Sidenote, but John Cooney's interactions with fans on his twitter are actually just really nice. His twitter isn't one for the banter, the messages feel very genuine.

Indo article says ulster after Carbery and JJH on loan

    Ulster says no.

As a Connacht fan, I just want to chime in on Cooney.
I always thought he was an equal, or just the tiniest bit behind Marmion for us. Never had any fear when he started are came off the bench.

I was very happy for him when he signed for Ulster, as he deserves to be starting the majority of weeks for some team.

And as for Twitter, I almost always got a genuine response from him whenever I sent him a message. Seems like a proper nice young fella.

Neither will happen. It's unclear when Bleyendaal will return so Munster need to retain JJH. Carbery is playing regularly at Leinster, he doesn't need to move.

  • Administrators Posts: 53,375 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

    Neither will happen.

    Never in a million years.

Leinster and Munster are likely to be in league playoffs and progress in Europe, they won't be in a position to give up players who are in their first 23 more often than not. The idea is just nonsense.

From the Munster side you're looking at one of the Johnstons. Both are well down the depth chart but not at the level Ulster need.

Carbery certainly won't happen. He's was starting for Leinster in the ECC before the injury. Why would he want to move?

JJH is an outside chance. Depends on the return of TB as Thomond says. But I'd wonder if he'd be of much benefit to Ulster, to be honest.
