For the "goal", the umpires clearly don't know what they are at, as the commentary said, if the ball goes over the line it's their job to put up their flag, and it's up the ref to decide if it should stand. They just stood there looking at each other.

I think Dublin got 1 free in the first half

It's still up to the referee to give the free out above all else though. Doesn't matter if the ball crossed the line, the referee mistake far outweighed the umpires.

    25—4, seems very very lopsided

I understand that - but if you watch what happened, no flag went up and the play just continued, and then the ref blew the whistle and went to have a chat. Do the umpires have mics?

had Cluxton fallen to the ground, the ref probably would have given the free - i.e. you need to go to ground to win a free which is obv wrong.

Just on that i thought i saw a Dublin player punched in the face in the second half. Needless to say he didn't hit the deck. The referee had a look and brought the Fermanagh free forward.

Have people completely forgotten the Qualifiers when they say the Championship has served us well for so long?

Shows you how much thought goes into the argument.

Absolutely. Us Dubs are used to being rationed. 1983, 1995, 2011 and 2013.

Mind you we are unbeaten in AI finals against Kerry in the last 30 years.....

    37................

championship format on the agenda on TSG, apparently, won't see it.

only the usual 5, maybe 6, decent teams in the country. the teams that make up the top 5 might vary, slightly, and putting them into a group of 5/6 and battering each other for Sam (which would be great) is about the only format option which would not be unbalanced in some way.

even if you went for a group of 8, galway, cork, derry and anyone else would come up short but would make a great group of the next six to be promoted, for the following season, when they win out their tier.

Case of referee from Kerry, referee trying to keep a game close, or just a rubbish referee?

Rubbish ref. The 'goal' says it all about his knowledge of the game

Thinking about this, we still need the provincials as Donegal and Monaghan used them to get to the next level.

What use have the Qualifiers been to the weaker counties? It's useless for the likes of Carlow or Waterford.

Even Qualifier specialists like Derry haven't moved to the top tier. My own county had a good record in them but it took provincial success to break into the top tier.

would the super 6 format not give a chance for the next tier to improve tho? the not-so-super-6 *jokes* second division would be perfect for those emerging teams to break into the top tier, but only when they'd be ready. i think if the championship format was to go to a summer league structure, dividing teams into anything more than the six could be counter-productive.

i do take your point tho.

No I think it goes a bit further than that. It was willfull influencing of the game. - he knew ****in well what he was doing

    I think that's very true.
If he was giving that goal to Fermanagh out of pity then it should be the last senior inter county game he refs.

I'd be interested to know what conversation he had with the umpires?

It should be regardless. 23-4 or whatever it was is way beyond explanation. A cursory glance at the stats is all one needs to realise he reffed one team and one team only.

Shame for Dublin. Thought they were very disciplined in the tackle actually.

That's not usually the case when tackling goalie in square though. Touch them at all and free out.

    We might actually find out.

There is a show on Radio Kerry on Monday nights called Terrace Talk, a sports panel discussion show.

One of the panel is a guy called Liam Brosnan, who is one of Padraig O Sullivan's umpires.

The presenter Weeshie Fogarty is also a former inter county ref.

I be very surprised if they did not mention the goal while speaking with Brosnan, but I'd be also surprised if Brosnan gave us anything of value in return.

The podcast is usually available by Wednesday

The league is meaningless. If we get there we'll worry them more than any other Ulster county.

Not sure about this. I and anyone I've spoken to about it are hoping big time that Tyrone could take care of Monaghan for us.

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,134 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

Tyrone have had a ramble through the tough B side of the draw playing Limerick, Meath, Tipp and Sligo, while avoiding the likes of Derry, Down and Galway.

They are an average team living off the memories of a decade ago.

Kerry opened a can of whoop ass on them in Killarney a few years ago and the reaction from the Kerry folk was like they won the All Ireland.
That put the nail in the coffin of any nervousness Kerry had with Tyrone.

I hope Monaghan, for their own sake, have learned their lessons from two years ago.

Fr Tod. I thought Cormac Reilly would have had an indefinite rest back to his holiday home but that didn't happen.

I remember that alright it was crazy stuff, in fairness it shows a level of respect in a funny kind of way.

Have to say I was shouting for Kildare a little yesterday, purely because I wanted to see them put in a good show not because I wanted them to turn over Kerry for anyone. A fermanagh situation would have done it for me. I work and live beside a lot of Kildare people.

I always pick a side in a game, makes it more interesting, doesn't mean I hate the other team, that could swing from one year to another tbh.

But wrt Tyrone, I remarked on this before the legacy of their great team has left them in a difficult position now. They have Dublin and Kerry who love a crack at them now and Donegal too, never mind Monaghan doing so well. many of their old rivalries or teams they handed out beatings to a few years ago are a bit better them them now and won't take their eye off them for a minute.

Like for all the beatings and close ones we had against Kerry. It's all good stuff but I remember an interview with M Harte where he was talking about Dublin and he gave this cheaky laugh about how good his record against them was, it stuck.

They've great supporters and a great structure, but until they can get back to being either the best or the second best team in the country they are not going to catch many on an off day, they are still highly respected.

But that celebration from Kerry in killarney was huge, I've been there in the same competition on both winning and losing sides having performed well against Kerry in recent championships and I've never seen anything like that.

It made me realise that the Dublin Kerry team rivalries over the years have been largely healthy.

I'm calling it now, it will be a mayo v kerry final, after watching both donegal and dublin, I don't think they are up to much. As a kerry man i would be fearful of Mayo as they would be up for some serious revenge after last years semis.
