There is another thing that most players (big Dan) don't like playing hurling under lights.

Hurling should not be played under lights it is just a lazy way of fulfilling fixtures, its wrong because the ball is too small and barely visible in rucks.
People who have played hurling under light's can understand this.
Gaelic football yes but no way hurling.

The new CPA movement (Club Players Association) is badly needed as the GPA strictly speaks out for inter county players only. It is obvious that it is a countrywide problem that club players are being treated like second class citizens, that county boards are being influenced by senior management and are forgetting about the 98% of players that keep the clubs afloat all year round.
10,000 signatures we are led to believe have signed up for the new initiative and if true it won't take long to implement but my worries for it would be where the money is going to come from to run it and logistically it will take some work to organise it properly and successfully.
I wish them the best of luck because the clubs are the bedrock of this association and are entitled to have first refusal on their own players and not be told by county managers when they can have them back for training, games etc. So if this is to survive the foundations (clubs) have to be treated properly or we won't have players to serve at county level because they will eventually get hacked off with this set up and join other codes that have proper structures in place so the players can plan their lives accordingly and not like it is in this county where the players have no idea from one end of the year to the next when they will be playing. How many incidents could we give as evidence of teams playing no games for months and suddenly they are thrown out in the poorest of weather week in week out so as to rush off the club championships on time. DISGUSTING AND DISGRACEFUL.

Thinking of getting a Waterford GAA season ticket . Just wondering do you have to buy one before a certain date or could you just buy one mid December ?

Presume you mean the season ticket for the county team?

they went on sale on Oct 10th, it is €99 for an adult and €20 for a juvenile ticket.

I presume you would be ok to get one in mid December (the only season tickets that are for renewal only are the Dublin and mayo football ones, which presumably means they are the only ones that sell all of their allocation)

Ballygunner mass defence, short slick passing out. Long range scores and running off the shoulder...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,601 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

its hard to see Ballygunner or Passage having enough to beat Thurles Sars esp in Semple Stadium but club games can go anyway

If Ballygunner or passage go on to win the munster club than we will be without the Mahonys, Coughlan, SOS and Soky or Noel Connors for the early stages of the league but if it comes to that than its a good thing for Waterford hurling in general

I'd be surprised if Shane O'Sullivan was on board next year. Barely played a minute this year and from what I've seen he has been average for Ballygunner this year.

the draws for the 2017 Minor and Under 21 Munster Hurling and Football championships take place tonight follow the Munster GAA twitter from 8pm. Draws will also take place for the under 17 Munster Hurling and Football championships

In the under 21 hurling our only chance of a home game is if we draw Cork, If we draw Tipp, Limerick or Clare we will play away. U could argue that there is no pressure on the under 21s next year as we reached the golden grail but the new lads coming in will want to impress and aim for a historic 2 in a row (never done in Waterford in any grade)

2017 will be the last year the minor grade is under 18 and its tough to guess at this stage do we have potential in this grade for next year ???

Hopefully the under 21 and Minor footballers next year put up a good showing

hope we do, would be a bit late to assemble a new senior management team

    Draws

    Under 17
Football- QF Cork vs Waterford winners play Limerick in the Semis
Hurling- QF Kerry vs Clare winners play Waterford in the semis

    Minor
Hurling- R1 Waterford vs Clare- Loser plays Cork in the playoff
    Football- R1 Waterford vs Limerick

    Under 21
Football- QF Kerry vs Clare Winners Play Waterford in the semi
Hurling- Semi final- Cork vs Waterford (QF Tipp vs Limerick- Clare in the Semi)

great draw for the under 21 hurlers, we will have home advantage in the semi

While I agree, i don't think you should be quipping the man has given his whole life over to being a county player, no need to kick him when he's down .

I think he got 5 or 6 minutes in one match in the league, surely has to quit while he's ahead, better to go out on your own steam

    Absolutely

A very whole hearted player who has done a great job for Waterford over the years, and who deserves more than quips like that from Waterford fans.

Tell me that last time he was outstanding for us and in what year? There has been plenty of players that have given their all for Waterford hurling down through the years but knew when their time was up. This, frankly is an embarrassing situation because he doesn't seem to think he's past it and why management have him still involved is beyond me. He was solid at best when playing inter county, nothing more. There probably has been 10 better midfielders on the different panels he has been on down through the years. In fact if you watched his performances at club level this year you would wonder what he brings to the thing.

I didn't say he has anything to contribute, quite the opposite, i simply said it's not appropriate for someone who gave is all for his county, and much as ken mcgrath or dan shanahan or anyone did, the fact he is not as talented or succcessfull doesnt change the fact he committed and should be respected for it, not ridiculed

I would agree with that to an extent. But given the talk about his attitude towards management in respect of his game time last year i'd be amazed if a) he could stick another year of it and b) the management decided to keep him involved. It's obviously huge dedication but when u think of some of the players McGrath has let go to bring through younger players it's a little surprising to see him still around it. As I said from watching club matches he has been far from outstanding this year, something that regularly occurs to players on the periphery of the panel who have been training all year but not playing too many matches.
In terms of new faces I would imagine Conor Prunty will be called into the setup and Harney, Lyons and Hahessy also probably but I can't see any of them making a major break through just yet barring injuries. Billy Nolan could possibly be looked at, maybe as sub goalie. Can't think of too many more who will be forcing their way into the management teams thinking.

One or two of your choices not up to it.

Possibly but worth a look. Care to expand on which ones and why? Prunty did the man marking job on all the big names this year. Hahessy had outstanding season and while unlikely to dislodge the bigger names is a good back up. Lyons similar. Harney outstanding all year, if he applies himself constantly could be a good addition. Billy Nolan has to be added, a matter of when not if.

I'm.not going to name names, just think that someone's hurling is not up to it.

Care to add any more names to the mix of potential additions? Ones that might have better hurling?
Pa Walsh and Killian Fitz have been superb for Passage this year but I couldn't see them making any break through at this stage.

Peter Hogan will probably get looked at I'd say . Anyone from the under 21 team that was good enough was probably already on the senior panel although I think Hahessy has potential to be very good . I'm told Jack Fagan is a lot better than he has shown so far so maybe him too

Jordan henley put his hand up too, feel bad for IOR ,he could have had a career with many a top county (tipp and KK he would be n contention) just SOK edges him out now 2 more goalies coming. that's sport as they say

True. Both Henley and Nolan could potentially be used as outfielders even in the senior set up in the future. Henley will probably feature outfield for next years U21's with Nolan eligible again. Hogan probably get a look in too. Fagan played well for DLS in patches this year, I believe he is U21 next year too although open to correction on that.
I think the biggest challenge next year could be keeping players around. Limerick after winning the U21 saw a lot of players head to the states for the summer. It could easily happen us next year as they will no doubt get some big offers after the U21 success. With so many students on the panel it is always a risk.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,601 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

I wonder is Brick sticking around around ?

Are Tom Devine and Jamie Barron heading to the states next year ??

I'd love Dj Foran, Colm Roche, Connor Prunty and Michael Harney make the step up next year

Hopefully Mcgrath and co will let the players play like we did against Kilkenny in the semi finals this year and let's guys like Stephen Bennett, Patrick Curran, Shane Bennett, Colin Dunford show there potential

The transition period is over, no more excuses of that nature from next Jan on

Killian Fitzgerald yes , should be added, possible Ray Barry (depends on attitude) playing well for Lismore and CIT.

Ah come off it now, Iggy has been around for 15 years and never managed to nail a starting place in the 1 spot, why is that? certainly not because weve been blessed with quality keepers. Clinton Hennessy came back after 9 years in America at 28 years of age, and walked straight onto that team, and made a decent career for himself out of it. And he was no Cummins, Fitzhenry or Og Cusack. Iggy and Brenner were the only other 2 options at the time and neither could be trusted lets be honest. He left the panel for a few years, Skully Ryan brought him back in 2012, gave him every chance to stake a claim again (SOK was a bit dodgy the first year or 2 - still can be imo) and still couldn't do it. A good lad to have around the panel no doubt, but was never up to intercounty standard
