...but the fact that BotW is a launch title I'd forgive anyone for day 1'ing it.

Twilight Princess was one of my main reasons for day 1-ing the Wii. The Wii U I primarily day 1-ed because I was worried that once people twigged how great off-tv play could be, they'd start disappearing, so I bought it and put it away till Christmas!

Ha, I bought the Wii U on launch for the same reason...because they were gonna be like hens teeth due to the demand....:o

I don't know if I'll buy NX day 1. I swore I wouldn't after the disappointment of Wii U, its launch was awful. Have some people forgotten just how bad it was? The OS, no killer games, the specs, price for what it could do, the wi-fi was atrocious(I remember placing the Wii U on floor in the middle of the room to get a signal). The OS system is now very good but it took a long time for it to be so. But I could easily cave and buy NX at launch. Things that could sway me are the specs, price and killer games. I also bought Gamecube, Wii and N64 on day 1. Couldn't buy the SNES at launch but got it as a Christmas present. Gamecube was probably the best launch(Star Wars Rogue Leader followed by Pikmin a couple of weeks later). They were all good apart from Wii U.

A little harsh as far as the launch titles are concerned?
    New Super Mario Bros U
    Nintendo Land
    Tekken Tag Tourney 2
    ZombiU
it had titles from all the big developers too.

As long as the NX has Mario Chase as a lauch title, I'm happy.

Day 1 line ups are tough though. The PS Vita had a pretty great launch line up, then had virtually nothing for ages after that (then the software dried up altogether)

PS3, PS4, 360, Xbox One, all had bad launch line ups and software droughts, its not a Nintendo exclusive thing.

I fell in love with Fantavision on the PS2, that was a great launch title.
Also, on the 360 we got King Kong and a Need for Speed title, both of which weren't bad at the time.
The PS4 didn't shower itself in glory, but the Xbox One had an awful line up.
The WiiU was a shining gem compared to the two of those

The only things I remember from the 360 line up was Kameo and Call of duty, they were decent.

That might (I think they said it was) even be why the NX was delayed. Make sure there's sufficient software to have a decent launch line up, and keep up a reasonable drip of games for the after launch period. MS/Sony have 3rd parties to kinda fill in those gaps, but Nintendo doesn't currently. Of course that could change if the NX sells well, but if not, we'll probably be having the same conversations about the NX we're having about the Wii U now.

So no VR with the NX, happy with that. Less distractions for them.

Seems a generic list of formats no? Discs are also mentioned right next to carts...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,485 ✭✭✭✭Banjo

What if it's a disk that has a bunch of cartridges mounted on it, so depending on the data that needs to be loaded into memory the disk spins the correct cartridge into alignment with the pins?

It's just stupid and fragile and inefficient enough to be something NintenDo that others Nintendwouldn't-even-joke-about.

Wii U release though as well.

Wii U release though as well.

The rumored handheld features of the NX I'd wager. I wonder if NX games will come on disc, & come packaged with some form of cart that allows on the go use.

    Aw, you guys :D

The idea of a combined Cartridge / Disc release for handset / console interplay does not bode well for game prices - considering how most first party titles hold their value and how 3rd parties will view the publishing costs of a dual format release, not to mention the associated licensing payments to Ninty, I really hope that that is not where this platform is going.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,120 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

They won't do one with combined Disc / Cartridge, too many overheads in that. The cartridge would be to negate the need for any moving parts, such as a disc would need, but it'll just be one format for the console/handheld I think, should it turn out to be such a hybrid format in the first place.

If they are going to make this to be cheap, and I hope they do, they'll lob in a Bluray drive, maybe with the capacity to read WiiU discs, maybe not.
Tons of space on those, cheap as chips, reliable and, with a PS style online account, an easy to maintain writable storage too.
A handheld could easily be built around the same OS and GUI but be geared to operate as a standalone machine, with carts, or for downloadable content, from either a local source, your NX machine, or from non-local eshops.
No reason for the handheld to care where the game comes from, as long as it's compatible, and the experience with the DSi/3DS has shown there's room on the one handheld for multiple game sources.
Not to mention to use of the handheld to unlock handheld specific content from purchased NX software, so I buy Super Mario Galaxy 3 on the NX and I get to install a subgame on the handheld, or a bonus portable edition of Super Mario Galaxy, or the handheld just mirrors the main TV, as the Touchpad has done for the WiiU.
This latter feature would also mean that the NX could easily run WiiU titles, without the need for the NX to be packaged with a touch screen controller, when the handheld will do, if the the buyer chooses that these are games he or she wants to play

Doesn't Sony "own" the rights to the Bluray drive ? I mean doesn't game companies have to go to Sony and pay a small fee for putting in a that kinda disc drive and its the reason why no Nintendo console played DVDs or Blu ray due to the falling out they had years ago.

It's not just Sony. It's a conglomerate of companies that paid to develop the technology and so Sony receive a percentage of the royalties from any company that use Blu-Ray.

Wii games were on DVD, & Wii U games are Blu Ray...

Yup. Neither console plays movies on those formats though, only game media. I think the Wii can be hacked to play DVD films, not sure.

"In terms of NX, there's an idea that we're working on," said "Super Mario" and "Donkey Kong" creator Shigeru Miyamoto through a Japanese translator. "That's why we can't share anything at this point, and I don't want to comment on the other companies. If it was just a matter of following advancements in technology, things would be coming out a lot quicker."

    Sound's like a gimmick alright.

    Nope
They use a proprietary format, the WiiU Optical Disk.
It's made for them by Panasonic, apparently, and by not including DVD/Blu playback they save on the licencing fees they'd have to pay to the development conglomerate of companies that developed those formats.

    I love the line
"The true enthusiasts out there will want the latest hardware."
I'm a gaming enthusiast, I won't spend money on new hardware unless there's the games to play on it.
Other you wind up with a PS3, little more than a glorified paperweight and dust collector for the first 18 months of it's life.

Interesting, it seems to essentially be a blu ray disk with just enough of a different to not incur a license fee. I'd never noticed the rounded edges either, must dig out a game & take a look

Microsoft have decided to close down Xbox fitness completely. I can only hope that Nintendo "Quality of Life" proposal on NX will save me from myself!
