As the Tesco in Dundrum is open till midnight anyway, there's a chance for it at least. Doubtful for the Square I'd say!

True, never even thought of that. You've raised my hopes now!

Now we know who to blame for our disappointment if it doesn't happen :pac:

Whoever was asking about cancelling pre orders in Gamestop, I went in there with my receipt and loyalty card, gave me the €400 for the switch and zelda back no hassle.

Still gonna buy the thing at launch though, but Tesco staff discount + clubcard vouchers are too much of a deal to pass up as compared to giving Gamestop €420 total.

Now what am I supposed to rob.

Ah in fairness this isn't the first DLC on Nintendo system, Mario Kart 8 has it for a start. ****, horse armour though, that was amazing, especially coupled with Microsoft points so you weren't always 100% sure of the exact price.

I also assume any gamer of any persuasion is well versed in the ways of DLC at this point.

Mariokart DLC was great DLC. It came out of the blue, just when you were starting to lose some of your Joie de Kart, and it doubled the size of the game for half the price. Yes, it included a new difficulty level but it was the entirely new 200cc, and on release they gave 150cc and mirror mode to everyone for free if they hadn't already unlocked it. Very tastefully done. If the content was ready at launch they kept a lid on it for an awful long time, I can only assume this was DLC as god intended - developed after the release of the game to rejuvinate interest in the title. It was very well handled.

DLC is not the issue. It's the announcement of DLC before the game has come out - Why isn't it in the box??? DLC is supposed to be additional content, not some insidious installment plan for helping execs pay off their yacht lease.

This isn't strictly "Horse Armour", they're not launching the Zelda DLC on Day 1 and it's not cosmetic nonsense, but you are paying for something (the additional difficulty) that used to be free, should have been part of the original game's budget for launch and arguably doesn't require much other than a little additional play testing to implement. I know it's not the entire DLC pack, but it's going to wrankle some peeps.

Given the bulk of it won't be out till late in the year, chances are they've not completed the DLC yet, but are working on it. And why not? If the game has gone gold but they're continuing work on more content, even if this was planned, then no harm, it's all good. DLC is a mainstay of games now, generally smaller teams continuing on content after main development completes, to try to generate more income. It makes sense from a business perspective.

Cheers. Went in today at lunch to cancel but the girl wasn't sure how to put the refund through and the manager was out of the shop.

I was on my lunch break and didn't have time to wait for him so I'll head back in at the weekend.

But it would be nice if they just kept quiet about paid DLC until well after the game launches. If they're asked the question then just respond with generic marketing crap - 'we hope to add content to it down the line...' - and leave it at that.

Just to be clear : I don't object.
Someone asked why there was an uproar online and I'm guessing it's a Horse Armour reaction, because I remember how that felt and as a monogameous Nintendo consoler who's been isolated from his PC since 2009ish I haven't been numbed to the march of DLC. I still acutely remember Oblivion and the inexplicable gouging on Day 1. (And I also remember playing an early build of Mount and Blade shortly after and laughing about the horses in Oblivion.... but I digress!)

This isn't what Nintendo do. Their one massive selling point over the competition 2 gens ago was that if you went out and bought the console and a game, excepting hardware or media issues or no access to 220v Mains on account of the robot uprising of 2435, the game would work. No reliance on patches or servers that could get turned off. It's not going to sell a console at launch but I'll bet it makes a difference to collectors. Nintendo don't release 1st party games that aren't finished!

That they are doing it now could be quite telling. I'm not upset, I'm intrigued about what it might mean and optimistic despite countless generations of being let down by Ninty's policies. But I can understand why this would cause ripples in the Nintendite community. And I have a tendency to write in the first person when trying to empathise with others. And to start sentences with "but" or "and" even though that's grammatically appalling.

(Edit - I know, I know, it's not "not finished" but I was raised in a world of Expansion Packs, not DLC. The Mariokart 8 DLC *was* an expansion pack. the 2nd Zelda DLC is an expansion pack from the sounds of it. The 1st one sounds like stuff that ought to be in the box if they're going to bother doing it at all).

I'm going to have to say I'm happy to wait and see what these packs bring to BotW.
People buying into Fallout, Skyrim or Witcher games have always done so knowing full well that dlc would be on the way in the months following the release and no one has complained, except where the dlc has lacked value for money.
We see a new kind of LoZ game being released in the coming weeks, with a Nintendo who say they have learned lessons from their experience of selling games, hardware and even seeing how others do it.
It's hardly surprising then that one of these lessons should be creating a fresh revenue stream by packaging game expansions for money later on.
I think the timing is certainly poor, but had the announcement occured in July 17 there would still be those who feel Nintendo have let them down.
Again, it's not essential that these are bought, it'll be interesting to see the eventual proportion of consumers that buy into it.
So, an open mind here from me.
Mario Kart 8 had great value in dlc, that's the only form Nintendo really have in this regard, so I won't be too concerned.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,120 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

Yeah, the value or lack thereof will only be telling when it's released tbh. I'll be damned if I'll be paying €20 for Hero Mode and The Hero's New Clothes (I can see the in game ad now... "Switch tunics available NOW in the Nintendo UK & Ireland store, offer only applies to the UK...")

However, if the story based part of the DLC and the "map additions" amount to something decent, I'll be all over it like Banjo on his mixed metaphors. Which is to say it'll be disgraceful, but somehow entrancing all at the same time...

Character packs would be one guess, Tingle for instance he is creepy.

Short sighted people forget the most expensive expansion of all was going to be the LoZ that would have demanded buying a 64DD, until it failed and they released it as OoT Master Quest instead

Still on the fence whether to get the Switch. More than likely I will pop into Argos and see have they any with the colored Joy Cons as that's the only version I'm interested in. Argos are brilliant for deals too so might even get a bit off Zelda.

As for buy now or wait until there's a good library, does it really make a difference? There might be a slight price drop and a bigger library, but the people who buy it now have the cost of the console out of the way and they GET TO PLAY ZELDA ON LAUNCH DAY.

Nintendo have the nostalgia factor that Sony & Microsoft don't have, I feel absolutely nothing for either of those companies but love love Nintendo. I got a nes with the Turtles game for Xmas in 1990 and have owned every Nintendo console since. The message I'm trying to get across is .............. I think I'm getting a fcuking Switch:)

Anyone else remember the simple joy of being a kid, owning a console and only having a decent game or two to play, and you sucked the marrow out of those games, getting the most they had to offer.
Perhaps it'll be the same this time.

In a way I'm delighted that the launch line up doesn't really appeal to me apart from Zelda. None of this feeling obliged to try a couple of games out. Just get stuck into one. Much better for concentration, und hence, overall immersion.

There's always a bit of a bright side.
It's would be nice if we had Mario Odyssey as well, but I would hope we'll see some interesting stuff during E3.
Either way I'm happy to be investing in a Switch soon and have no doubts about my preorder.

Hmmm thinking now that the girl not being able to cancel my pre order in GameStop today is a sign to keep the pre order :pac:

I remember trading stuff in so I could get the games I wanted as Snes games weren't cheap back then, Peats in Parnell Street was a gold mine for bargains though. I miss shops like that now as finding a bargain just ain't what it used to be.

£60 in 94 for an unboxed VR Racing on the Megadrive.
    Worth every penny!
That must be the equivalent of close to €90 or €100 in today's cash.
I can also recall having I think two games on the SNES for a while, Super Mario World and Cybernator... Bliss...

If we're getting a Direct, when do you think it'll be? That might be what makes me finally decide.

Inflation and the currency change, I'd say about €130

Never had any problems with the DS Lite, DSi or 3DS I've owned.

DS Lite is 10 years old and survived a car crash with no bother.

Screens have all been top notch

    This worries me slightly

DS''s ship with an IPS or absolutely terrible TN panel. Hoping the same doesn't happen on the switch.

On a positive note, Amazon upgraded my order to be delivered on the 3rd. So I should have it on the 4th through parcel motel.

Don't think they usually do directs on a Friday, so I'd guess some day mid next week...

    Quick question.

I've the switch pre ordered online but I'm thinking about getting it at the midnight launch instead.
Am I best pre ordering in a smyths store or can I do it online? And is it possible to get the red and blue switch still?

There is a surprising amount of pre orders still open. I don't think you'd have a problem.
