Oh, don't get me wrong, I still love my N64, mine is a US model with the tabs cut out so it can play Jap games too.
    Via rgb
    At 60Hz
So everything runs crispy, or as crisp as it can, full screen and at full speed, instead of the fuzzy, letterboxed, slow PAL muck we were fed here.
Waverace 64 is great, at full speed, full screen and playing the jap version that includes rumble support it's a revelation!

Forget Mario Kart 64 though, it's the weakest one.
Best racing games on the system are the likes of Beetle Adventure Racing, Diddy Kong Racing, Mickey's Speedway and Top Gear Overdrive.
Wipeout 64 is an interesting experiment but Ridge Racer 64 is pure trash.
And none of them hold a candle to F1'97, Wipeout 2097 and Rollcage 2, not to mention Need for Speed 3 and Road Challenge, Gran Turismo 1 and 2 and Colin McCrea and it's sequel.

Sorry, just to reaffirm, I do love Nintendo stuff, is dearly love to see a HD remake of Super Mario Sunshine, the best platformer of its console generation and one of the most unfairly maligned titles too.

So, either NX wasn't demoed behind closed doors at CES, or the Nintendo ninjas have imposed one hell of an NDA. We'll find out soon enough I guess, theres rumours abound on reddit.

    What kinds of rumours?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,431 ✭✭✭MilesMorales1

Mostly about the power, architecture. I'm not a technical guy so I couldn't tell you what most of it means, but supposedly its more powerful than the PS4/XB1, which I'd take with huge amounts of salt.

Anyone moaning about WiiU game prices should look at PS4/Xbone prices, €75 for a new game is mental. Viva la WiiU & PC Masterrace combo.

Well, both the XB1 and PS4 are a couple of years old now, from a design point of view, coupled with the fact they are drastically simpler devices than their predecessors, particularly the PS4.
Given the relatively "off the shelf" nature of the current gen's internals it's not a stretch to guess that Nintendo, with relatively little investment can produce hardware that can out pace both consoles.
But then it'll be down, surely, to the quality of the OS, the user experience, the online features, what they are like to use.
Nintendo, sadly, are a long way behind both the Sony and MS offerings, not really willing to take the training wheels off the WiiU at least.
The lack of voice chat in Splatoon is understandable but very limiting if it's Nintendo's plan going forward to limit their machines to "family" type experiences with their hardware.
The games player, or even the relatively casual player who likes to think they are god's gift to gaming, will demand an open, fast and logical online experience, not the pretty but limited offering there is at the moment.

If its not more powerful those those two they might aswell give up making consoles. All they have said so far officially is its going to be a new type of experience so it will be interesting to see what they come up with.

You never ever have to pay €75 for a new game. There are plenty of places where €65 is the norm.

After 6 months or so that price is €40-€50 and only drop further over time. The only time Nintendo games drop if when a new console comes out.

PS1 for me. Okay you had mariokart, wcw, GoldenEye and Mario 64 but PS had CTR, Smackdown and Crash Bandicoot. The N64 games might have been marginally better but PS had loads more to make up for those. Tekken!

Go into HMV and tell me how much they sell new PS4/Xbone games for.

Yeah but you don't have to pay that. Its very convenient, but you can order online, or argos, or symths, or less, argos almost always does new releases for €60 or lower. Or if you wait even a month or 6 weeks, the price of most new releases on XB1/PS4 plummets.

You don't have to pay it is what I'm saying. Don't go to HMV. Don't go to GameStop.

Pick it up for €65 in Smyths or sometimes less in Argos . Definitely less online too.

Point taken but a lot of people don't have much options but to pay the 75 in HMV.

Everyone has a Visa Debit card nowadays, buy from the UK. I have never payed more than €50 for a PS4 or XB1 game. Tons of options out there.

Eh, is it the mid 90s again?

Never understood why people by from gamestop and hmv still? You can buy from all over Europe at much cheaper prices including postage for Nintendo consoles games
    for years!

It's just laziness or ignorance (hate that word) on their part keeping gamestop mainly open here.

Theres loads of option. Your just being obtuse, no one is forced to pay that much. Not that I wouldn't like gamestop or HMV to be cheaper, but it is what it is.

Most people can't shop in Tesco?

At the end of the day, 2 things are keeping Gamestop and HMV in business.
    1. The Rut : People are creatures of habit, and they are in the habit of browsing game shelves, which you can't do in Argos, and Smyths tends to only exist in Out Of Town monolithic stores. I'm thinking these people are often browsing for a Fifa or CoD, and are the gaming equivalent of the people who watch Fast and Furious movies. In the cinema, like.

    2. Aunties : An auntie knows you like games, they'll buy you a token for a shop that sells games and then you're locked into their pricing. Just give me the money, auntie! Or better yet, stop buying me christmas presents, I'm nearly 40 and I didn't even send you a card!

Do Gamestop still even have game shelves? Every time I pass through there seems to be another considerable section dedicated to swag/tat.

    Alright, we have something.

Now, usual pinch of salt applies, but a chap over on neogaf who leaked a fair bit of accurate stuff about the Wii U in 2011/2012 has re-emerged and stated 'a major western third party dev hasn't received a NX dev kit, and they have no idea when it is coming' The money is on ubisoft right now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,431 ✭✭✭MilesMorales1

Alright, all these are still rumours, but from verified insiders. Neogaf has its own system to verify insiders, and there's nothing wildly outside the box.
Over at Beyond3d some dude posted the following:

"I met up with a guy I know that works for Nintendo the other day and I slipped in some questions about NX. He has seen some prototypes and said it is a interesting device. I tried asking him whether NX would be one platform and he said yes but when I asked if that means it would be a handheld that you plug into a home station or something like that he didn't gave much of an answer though he is not in R&D or development and might not know.

It also looks like Nintendo is working on a new game in a franchise that has been missing since Wii and is heavily requested by western fans. Apparently Nintendo listened to the community and decided to make a new game. The reason Nintendo hasn't done so much with this franchise is because its not that popular in Japan and Nintendo being a Japanese company, if Japan doesn't ask for it they think the rest of the world doesn't care either. Won't mention the title as there hasn't been anything officially announced.

Some other little tidbits that might be fun to know is that Nintendo employees get 20% off on hardware but they don't really have to buy any games as they can just borrow them from the office library."

First ideaman, 2nd/3rd devs have NX kits if yours does not then thats Nintendos choice.

As i have said before the person that told me works for a dev who works on multiple platforms.

That person i have known personally for many years. I trust their integrity without question!

Although i do not have and specs or details of console or kit i was told that the team thought NX was awesome and to be ready to be very suprised!

AGAIN i am no insider just lucky to know a few select people in the industry.

I wanted to tell you this again as the information is in correct that all western devs do not have kits!
I can confirm that what xsapeguy2014 said about the NDA is true. It is indeed very strict (greatly so in comparison to the one that was in place for Wii U). I believe you need to go through a four-step (at least) verification process to even see it.
deaman and Arkam: both say at least one major Western dev doesn't have dev kits (could be the same dev)
xperter: says at least one major 2nd and/or 3rd party has a dev kit and is awesome
    Matt: 540p handheld
    John Harker: releases this year

Like I say, rumours still, but these are verified insiders (far as they can be verified) who have given reliable info before.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,146 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

If true, I guess the game missing since Wii is Metroid since that has a history of being bigger with Western audiences.

As for a dev with no ki, not sure if it is Ubisoft unless there was a big falling out there, since they showed their support for Wii U as much as possible, until they had to make a business decision to move on. True they screwed it on things like Rayman, but at least they didn't do an EA on it.

Speaking of EA, one thing Nintendo will really need to be careful with this time is that the system launches with new games and not games that have been out a long time. Mass Effect 3 releasing on Wii U around the same time as the trilogy releases for the same price on other systems? Yeah, doesn't make sense.

xsapeguy2014 is not verified on there at all, Ideaman is but has given out flaky tiny pieces of information in the past, some which has been true, some hasn't and even got trumped by another user with the information about Nintendo changing from nubs to stick on the Gamepad.

The WiiU thread on there last time was an absolute mess, with about 10% of what 'insiders' said they knew actually being true.

Anytime I'm in HMV for a quick look at the games section, the place is deserted. For good reason, the prices are absolutely ridiculous, and it looks like people are deciding with their wallets, i.e. not shopping there. Case in point, Mass Effect 2 special edition for Wii U - €54.99 or something I saw it for the other day in HMV. I picked it up for €3.99 in Argos the other week. And this is in Galway!

There's lots of options for buying, no matter where someone lives. Thank god for competition. :)

It's hardware suicide to ignore EA as a development resource for a new console.
The great unwashed don't give a septic donkeys left nut for Nintendo exclusives and just want to play Fifa and Need for Speed and buy new ones on an annual basis.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,431 ✭✭✭MilesMorales1

I'd say EA and activision are indeed essentials. I'm not sure what they could do without in a pinch, maybe Ubisoft? But then assassins creed and what not is big money so.

    More rumours, (I love this sh*t... :D)

    http://www.gameranx.com/updates/id/32543/article/more-rumors-on-nintendo-nx-appear-two-devices-with-one-os/
Some days ago I had been in contact with an Ubisoft Bucharest developer. ...
    ...
According to him, NX is a portable device and a home console. There will be two different devices, the handheld and the home console, the first one will launch in late 2016, while the home console will probably launch sometimes in 2017. They only recieved dev kits for the handheld as of now. He said they are both different systems but they share the same OS and account system, which makes it easier to him as developer to port games between both platforms. He also said that Nintendo probably doesn't intend to bring all their games to both systems, but he will find out more on this at CES 2016 where Nintendo will show them more of the hardware capabilities as well as the home console...
