I read a story a week ago or so that said Ubisoft didn't have dev kits and that they took it as a sign that NX is further off than we think. 99% of these stories are BS. They're all vague, nondescript, noncommittal. We never get something definite, like what processor is being used, that Nintendo will continue with a second screen on the controller or analogue triggers will make a comeback. I like reading them as you never know, we're desperate for information and they generate debate.

The funny thing with all these rumours is that there's actually almost nothing new being rumoured. The handheld/console duality was first mentioned months ago, most of the other rumours are basically 'It's underpowered', 'It's powerful', 'It's interesting', 'It'll surprise you. As sligeach said, all vague as anything, which you'd expect in a way for self preservation reasons.

Is anyone reading this stuff and not knowing the whiff of BS is strong?
It's not the point, this is fun!
Anyways, we'll find out more officially over the coming months.
Otherwise, I want to hear my rumours and leaks of nuclear powered, North Korean made gaming systems, thanks very much!

Well, on the bright side it will take up slightly less space in my front room than all my Wii guitars, remotes, nunchucks, gamepads, gamepad pros, golf clubs, maracas, tennis racquets, wii pii codpieces, sword grips, pistol grips, rifle grips, keyboards, drums, high heels, boxing gloves, balance boards, dance mats and charging stands.

    Unless it's backwards compatible....

Is there any good game that uses the balance board though? You could get rid of half of that.

The sequel to Kororinpa, an excellent balancing game from Hudson on the Wii, Marbles Balance Challenge, another excellent game, has a set of Balance Board levels that are fun.

    2) Kimishima says Nintendo wants to surprise fans with new ideas - not build on old ones. Nintendo will in 2016 release “details” on the NX.

    3) Kimishima claims the expansion to smartphones and theme parks, but also to movies and TV animes (via character licensing) is progressing.

    4) He says it’s vital for Nintendo to experiment with new business models. He confirms the first smartphone app will be rolled out in March.

    5) Kimishima promises smartphone apps with Nintendo’s famous characters in 2016. He wants to bring the company’s financials to a new level.

    6) The plan is to bring profits to 100 billion yen ($855 million) in “several years”. [Note: that would be 4x of last year's profit.] //end

Doesn't say we're not getting NX this year... right?

'Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima (pictured right) revealed the company's broad plans for the future on Friday. Kimishima said that Nintendo will announce details about its next-generation "NX" platform in 2016.

The company president said that the NX will not be the successor for existing game hardware, and it will be based on a completely new concept. '

Christ. Imagine Nintendo suddenly decided to leave us with the 3DS and Wii U, and gave us a goddamn smartphone or something.

I don't deny how much money there is to be made in mobile games, but that isn't Nintendo, and if they choose to dramatically shift in that direction, like instead of us getting a new handheld and home console, I don't think I'd buy it.

Nintendo said the same for the DS being different from the Gameboy and look how that turned out. I'd say it's just a wild new concept that they aren't sure will sink or swim.

Another gimmick it is so :-(

I like Nintendo's gimmicks, they're good. What I don't like is mobile gaming.

It sounds like a vague comment said to maintain interest in the Wii U & 3DS. I wouldn't hit the panic stations yet.

While assuming that MOST of the rumours on developer kits are rubbish, if ANY of them are true, nobody is suggesting a switch to a completely new architecture like a phone.

You could still truthfully say that a hybrid is not a direct successor to either Wii U or 3DS, surely?

Ah, they said the same thing for the gamecube and gba when the DS and Wii were coming out.

I would think it'll be new handheld this year and home console in 2017 all under the same 'NX' name and will link in a 'dramatic way' I sure.

Does that mean that Wii U games won't be backward compatible?

Wouldn't bother me at all if that was the case. I don't want the new machine restricted in any way just to provide backwards compatibility. I don't miss not being able to play my ps3 games on the ps4.

I don't think there is enough Wii Us in homes to justify backwards compatibility. The idea of BC seems to be greater than the actual service itself. It's not that big of a deal.

The excitement over the XBox One offering it was a bit ridiculous imo.

Honestly though, I'd say there's no chance of that, at the very least because they know that market is in constant flux, with hardware cycles that update on a yearly basis for most companies, for each of their offerings, and everybody has seen how hybrid phone/gaming devices turned out in the past.

(Yes, I'm looking at you, N-GAGE!)

True I suppose. I wouldn't wouldn't want it to affect the NX in any way at all either.
I just assumed it may have it as the Wii U is still pretty new and it looked similar to me, from what I have seen so far.

    Probably true too.
Also, I'd imagine the wii u will drop in price and still be selling...

Having that may stop sales altogether.

By the time NX comes out if it is this year, it'll be 4 years. I'd rather it wasn't Backwards compatible at this point.

BC for Wii U would be hard since would need a substitute for the gamepad in some way. One reason people want backward compatibility is so they can trade in their older console, but if you have to hold on to the gamepad, not many store would take the Wii U without it.

My impression from what I've seen is that the handheld works as/like a gamepad but can also be brought out with you.
That would be handy for nintendo if anyone loses or breaks it, they may have to buy a new one or repair it if they want to keep playing the NX.

They'll just repackage the WiiU titles of note as remasters, the same as they've done with the PS3/PS4

Phonecall sounds like a young boy....:)
Also, it doesn't mean 2016 launch (if talking about the NX), from what I take from it anyway.

I was reading about AMD when boards was down, they have said that the people can expect the PS4 and Xbox One to drop in price quite soon.
They also announced that two new Polaris chips will launch this year.

Xbox One will be getting a new Polaris chip and will launch this year. That could also be what they're referring to.
We also remain on track to begin revenue shipments of our additional semi-custom design wins starting in the second half of 2016.”

Since Su has suggested shipments starting from the second half of 2016, we could be looking at the new APU based Xbox One (if they happen) being shipped a month or so after June 2016.
