Amen. Been following IIFYM for a couple of months now and the fat is practically falling off me despite taking in over 300 grams of carbs a day.

Yeah I ran into a big issue last year when I was doing a summer of strength training while trying to cut fat. I skimped out on my carbs big time and supplemented it with protein and veg etc.

I was seriously struggling in the gym and not changing in terms of BF or shape or weight. Ran into a mate of mine who's a bodybuilder and he went through some macros with me and I changed my carb intake. All my stats shot up. Only regret was I left it too late in the summer to make a big difference to my physique. Will not make that mistake this time round.

What are the main things to watch?

Did you increase your fat intake when you did this? That's the big error that people make. You can't run a body on protein alone. It needs an energy source. You can use fats or carbohydrates, or a mixture of the two.

I find it interesting that there's such an increase in how conscious we are of what we put into our bodies (Ulster fans excepted!). There's a significant portion of society who are very aware of their nutritional requirements and maintaining a good level of health/fitness and that section is growing. Our where I live, 3 personal training companies/gyms have sprung up on the Clontarf Road within 1km of one another in the past 2 years. They're all jammed when I walk past.

The reason I find it so curious is that Ireland is on target to be the most overweight society in the EU by 2030. Is there such a complete disconnect between two sections of society? You're either very health conscious or a walking disaster?

To be fair I do eat pretty healthy. I've been the exact same weight for over 10 years! :D

I am prone to the odd pizza or kebab though. Any time I'm up home I have to get a proper kebab tray with chips and kebab sauce. Heavenly.

I sometimes have a breakfast roll in the morning and 1/4 pounder with chips for lunch

4 weetabix every day of the week and a fry at the weekends. Hoping the PT can help give a bit more direction to my eating.

You definitely need carbs (carbs = sugar by the way) in your diet.

Whilst I agree that many people could do with fewer carbs (we're an Island raised on starchy carbs because of a temperate climate) there is also a lot of scare mongering going on out there on carbs. Even when you're shredding you will require carbs.

If you're seriousness about your fitness there will be a time when you require more carbs than proteins.

Maybe I'm just being a bit pedantic. You won't die because you don't consumer carbs*. You will die from not consuming fat or protein. That's not to say that I for even one second advocate a no-carb diet. I'm just saying that they're not essential.

I agree with the rest though. I followed Noakes for a while on Twitter and it's almost distressing how evangelical and lacking in balance he became. All that said I think that it has helped to raise counteract the 'low-fat is good' myth that many of us were brought up on.

*How you get all of your vitamins and minerals without consuming carbs would be an interesting challenge though.

@ak is there any one book that goes through everything involved in weight training? Something that covers food as well as working out a training schedule. I've dipped below 15 stone in I don't know how long, but want to get up to 16 through weight training.

I've been putting in weight recently, used to be fairly good with my diet but it's all gone downhill as of late. Seriously need some discipline and to get out and do some exercise. I'm not very overweight or anything but I'm bigger than I should be.

Exercise is fantastic for health, but not actually great (read as effective) for weightloss.

Most people's issues is in portion sizing and what they perceive as healthy. If you tried to put twice as much leafy vegetables on your plate as you usually do, and then swore to yourself to eat them all first (i.e could leave potatoes/meat on the plate at the end of the meal) you'd start to see progress. Most people over-eat on things that are quite calorie dense. Move your over-eating to vitamins and nutrients and then taper the overeating down.

The site irishbucsfan linked is brilliant. An unfortunately anal but excellent way to regain control is to become a bit of a geek/pedant about what goes into your body, which means actually weighing your portions so to see the difference between what you thought you were consuming (calories) vs what you actually were.

+1 for starting strength, it's great for beginners.

Download the my fitness pal app, and track your daily calorie intake for a few days to a week. This will give you an idea of how much more you need to eat to put on weight. Aim for a slow increase, say 250-300 extra calories per day for the first week then weigh yourself again

I've got the opposite problem to most people. I said I was the same weight for 10 years which is true, but that's mainly because I haven't found a way to gain weight. Of course, eating more and ensuring that more goes in than goes out is the basic formula but that "eating more" is the difficult bit.

I get full easily, and usually weight gain diets require you to eat throughout the day. Forcing food in just makes me feel sick and I can't be sitting in work feeling like I'm about to throw up. :(

The drinking milk all the time approach? Yep, tried that. Was filling me up as well.

Dunno about that. Family history suggests I might just always be thin. :pac:

You need a month on the beer to fill you out.

Head to Murica for a bit.

Protein shakes using water instead of milk? I find it far easier to drink a lot of water instead of using milk.

Might be worth giving a go.

I tried protein shakes before and used milk. I found that instead of supplementing my normal intake from meals I was just eating less at mealtime cause I was still pretty full.
