Eurovision Song Contest 2015

Given that the selection process is already well underway I thought it was time to start the thread.

39 countries taking part this year, up two on last year. Ukraine have withdrawn for obvious reasons, whilst Cyprus, Serbia and the Czech Republic are all returning.

Here are the entries revealed so far, in the order they were chosen:

    Macedonia

Macedonia have never really had much luck at Eurovision, their best finish is 11th place, and I really don't see it changing much with this song.

    Malta

Not a bad song at all.

    The Netherlands

Trijntje has big shoes to fill after Anouk and the Common Linnets finished 8th and 2nd respectively. It's a pleasant song, the juries will probably like it, but it would be doing well to get top 10 in the final imo.

    Belarus

    Not liking this at all.

    Albania

    Dated, but ok.

Of course we can. We just have to send a decent song, which we haven't in a very long time.

What obvious reason would make Ukraine not enter? Surely the dodgy situation over there would mean getting closer to Europe would be better?

"What time is it now, Ted?"

    "Half-past one."

"Half one? And the competition is on in...?"

    "May."

Nothing says New Year like a new Eurovision thread! :D

The Netherland's song is catchy and Trijntje is an incredible singer (love that live performance you posted). However, it'll be hard to "Walk Along" in the huge shoes left by the The Common Linnets, so the song will stumble out of the Top 10.

Malta's National selection this year was incredible. Amber's song is good, plus she's lovely and has a great stage presence. Warrior is my favourite so far.

I really wish this song made it through though:

In the "Walk Along" video posted above it looks like Ilse DeLange of The Common Linnets is a judge on The Voice of Holland.

    Hello, you! ;)

Thank Christ yer man Mooney will be off the air this spring so we won't have to listen to him make up yet another excuse to discuss the Eurovision on every afternoon from February to May!

Can't see Ray Darcy giving it much attention, that is unless the producers in RTE decide that it's station policy to ram it down our throats at every opportunity though I'm thinking it was a personal obsession of Mooney's. Good riddance.

Spain just announced their entrant for 2015: Edurne!

Second consecutive strong pick from Spain. Really enjoyed Ruth last year.

    6/39 picked now.

I like it! Is this the first time ever two songs with the same title have competed?

Lots of rumours in Poland that TVP are sending Doda.

It wouldn't be a bad choice. Very popular and talented singer. Her stage performances are always a treat to watch.

Here's her latest release. Did I mention she's gorgeous? ;)

A desire to get 'closer to Europe' is one of the main reasons why the whole frig up kicked off over there to begin with.

But yeah, it's not a reason why they shouldn't compete. They did last year.

Not great being on that early, but at least we will have the UK vote this time.

Send a quality song & good singer(s) and none of that should really matter.

Why are you here? And if you did your research you'd know that Darcy used to give the Eurovision more than ample coverage every year and his Producer Mairead Farrell was even one of the eurosong contestants mentors last year.

He also presented You're A Star and Eurosong 2008 so I'm sure there will be more than a passing mention even if it's not at Mooney levels of overkill.

I don't think that is the final running order. It says something on the official site that the producers decide.

I've heard some of the final selections from the countries who've yet to decide but nothing really stands of for me yet. My favourite so far is probably Malta.

when will we no our contested for this years eurovision will it be another late late show special.

It was suggested some months ago that the format of The Hit - having famous singers perform songs written by unknown songwriters - would be used to select this year's Eurovision entry, but there's been no further news.

So the ultimate response of the folks at Montrose to last year's disasters in the LLS studio and in Copenhagen... is to stick with the same old selection format, only without the mentors.

And for so long it seemed that they actually would do something significantly different.

    *sigh*

:(:(:(:(

Listen to previews of each song this afternoon on Ray D'Arcy's Radio 1 show.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 811 ✭✭✭EB_2013

I'll have to tune in to the show later but I don't hold out much hope. The Swedish singer has been on their version of The Voice so she might be decent.

At least they won't be doing the mentoring this year as it was a farce last time.

Why in the name of God is it on the Late Late show? The completely wrong demographic to be selecting the song. Very few people in the 18-35 age group watch the Late Late and as a result, won't see the selection process.

Also, the acts with all due respect are nobodies. The last few winners have already been relatively well-known throughout Europe. The year we went with a well-known act (Jedward), we did very well.

We haven't a prayer of winning this anytime soon.

And here are the no-hopers hopefuls...

It's too shouty for my liking. Pity because I like the non-shouty bits.

    This tortures my ears.

Sounds like she wants a shoulder she can cry out of her eyeballs. Not for me, Bill.

Not a fan of the singer. Dunno if I'll change my mind. I might like this more if there were a softer touch to it.

Your standard Eurovision song. Not my type of music but probably the one I'd send of the five. Her nationality may count against her.

I think the wait goes on. RTE will be relieved!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,005 ✭✭✭✭Toto Wolfcastle

The first 3 are rubbish, the 4th is kind of okay-ish but only when compared to the others but it's kind of bland (although they're all bland) and the last one is rubbish.

We haven't a hope. Whoever selects these songs has learned nothing.

5 really ordinary, nothing songs. As already stated, RTE will be fine with that. We'll have Marty with his faux shock and despair at our failure to make the final when the time comes but there you go.

I haven't heard a song from us, thinking yeah, we might have a chance with this one, for about 20 years now. I really think we should pull the plug for a year or two and come back with a proper National Final, not some add on to a chat show.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,038 ✭✭✭Go Harvey Go

RTE clearly don't want to pull the plug, though.

RTE clearly don't want to pull the plug, though.

They don't want to pull the plug, and they clearly don't want to win, but I do think they want to do well.

Unfortunately they're still trying to find a typical Eurovision song, when in reality songs that aren't typically Eurovision tend to do well these days.

That or no decent songwriters are willing to get involved.

Australia has entered the 2015 Contest! A one off invite to celebrate the 60th anniversary and they go straight into the final.

This year, the Eurovision Song Contest celebrates its 60th anniversary. To give the anniversary celebrations an extra dimension and to walk the talk on this year’s theme Building Bridges, the EBU and host broadcaster ORF invited Australia to compete in the Grand Final of the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest. This brings the total amount of represented countries to 40.

If they win they will be invited back although they won't get to host. I think it's a great idea, if it goes well they should given an annual invitation.

Not surprised by that turn of events! I mean the skit about Australia in the final last year must have meant something and the reaction to it was huge! Plus Australia would send a good talent over, possibly well known over there and not so much in Europe! I can see Australia winning though, especially if they're just performing in the final!

I've no issue with Australia entering. Weren't Morocco in it one year? I'd say they will take it seriously as well and probably be up there with the Scandinavians battling for the title.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,038 ✭✭✭Go Harvey Go

Well I think it's great that the Aussies are entering in their own right. :o:D

And they're far from strangers to the contest - Olivia Newton-John represented the UK in 1974, as of course did Gina G in 1996.

Morocco did indeed take part in 1980 - although they scored 136 points less than Johnny Logan, and finished only above Finland. :o;)
