Thankfully those rumours about Force India missing Melbourne are looking to be false.

New Honda Engines sounds half decent!

How can you tell? Sky Sports showed the McLaren for about 2 seconds last night

A bit less Craig Slater and more cars would be good.

Hard to draw any conclusions from the Honda sound yet. It doesn't sound like it's running cleanly - or anything close to it. The sound reminds me of the cookie monster.

Kinda of OT but don't really want to start a new thread. Just remembering the beauty of the Jordans during testing/launch.

I remember EJ saying in an interview that when the 191 was launched, EJ said they polished up the carbon fiber as they didn't have enough money to paint it. It looks stunning in the photo Mike posted.

Worth noting as well that technically the car is the Jordan 911...until Porsche objected.

100% correct. They were planning to use Judd V10's in '91 too before getting their hands on Ford HB V8's.

And IIRC that explains the dimples near the back of the engine cover.

You know F1 has been off for too long when you're reminiscing about a car launch 24 years ago...

To think that De Cesaris very nearly (cit. Murray Walker) won the Belgian Grand Prix with the Jordan 191, a team that just arrived to the sport...nowadays, new teams are forever confined in the limbo of the last row :/

And Eddie got himself a Porsche as part of the deal to change the name.

That bit I didn't know. That's Classic Eddie...

Was more of a rebranding than a new team to be fair.

New teams tend not to stick around long in F1. If you want longevity in the sport you really need to buy and existing team and infrastructure. Red Bull will be the newest team on the grid in 2015 if you trace back through the timelines of all the teams. It has it origins in Stewart from 1997.

And that's exactly where the issue lies. The fact there hasn't been a single team able to establish itself decently in almost 20 years speaks volumes about how much the "big guys" are strangling the sport.

The roots of it are to be traced in the completely idiotic idea Bernie had about trying to turn the sport into a car manufacturer's carousel in the early 2000s, a project that did fail due to the complete ineptitude of the likes of BMW and Toyota, but has then left Ferrari and Mercedes in complete control.

A strong possibility of no German GP this year.

Apparently, Bernie wants Mercedes to step in with the cash. He must be a bit skint himself what with paying off that court case last year.

13:01 @McLarenF1: "We can replace those components ahead of running tomorrow. The issue was promptly spotted by Fernando on an outlap - so quick to trace."

13:00 @McLarenF1: "We've had a loss of cooling water pressure & have removed the power unit for inspection. That’s a long process, so it ends today's running."

Damn, was looking promising for a while there.

    Nothing wrong with that.

The 191 won the 'Autosport Racing Car Of The Year' award in 1991. A new team beating much more successful and better funded teams like Williams, Ferrari and McLaren

Can anyone clarify the rules re running these f1 engines in test bays and in old chassis / test mules etc.
I would have thought Honda would have turned up with something that was reasonably sorted that could actually run albeit not at full tilt or for extended runs but the way they are, it looks like the thing was never successful run in any car.

Ferrari top again is that just the Merc not running full power yet or has Ferrari made inroads into the Mercs advantage?

The Ferrari engined Sauber on top! :D

Its hard to tell but at least its reliable, the Ferrari engine. Fuel loads are the key as we can see the tyres. Not sure about today but yesterday Vettle did a lot of 10 lap stints. Maybe the Ferrari pace is genuine, maybe it was low fuel runs. Last year it was obvious everyone was fcuked bar Mercedes. This year its back to normal where its tough for the armchair expert to know the pecking order. :p

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,055 ✭✭✭muckwarrior

Whatever about Ferrari, it's normal this time of year for the smaller teams (especially ones desperate for sponsorship) to do their damnedest to top the times and grab some headlines.

Was just wondering that myself. Although someone pointed out last year Ferrari were top of the timesheets on day 1 as well.

Obviously just testing and Mercedes didn't show their hand straight away last year either but the two stories below are heartening.

Kimi Raikkonen says new Ferrari is a "different story"

Nico Rosberg says Ferrari's early pace is eye-opening

Hamilton's broken up with Sherzi again. Won't be good for his WC bid with him moping about and his juvenile paranoia problems.
