In his review of the new Ford Focus RS, Bob Flavin reckons that the suspension in the golf R is just a little too "bouncy bouncy" in daily use.Honda civic R too stiff but Focus just right.

Any of you R boys agree?

I don't find it bouncy at all.

I watched the review - the car as spec'd was near 60k! ...and no cruise control. Fine car but too much money I think.

Have you a link to the review? (goes off to search youTube...)

Not sure what he means by "bouncy" but I find it fine. It's firm, sometimes a tad too firm, but it's a hatchback on 19" wheels... I had my GTI on VWR springs (on the standard 18's) and that was much firmer.

I enjoyed watching that and don't mind him. But it does reek of getting a lend of a car from Ford Ireland, and don't dare criticise it. "Cruise control, not sure why you'd need that" :)

Can't believe a €60k car doesn't have cruise. "Doesn't need it" my backside. Ford are in cuckoo land these days with their spec and asking prices.

I'm 45 years old and have no problem been seen driving a golf gti/R but would never in my life consider a focus rs as my car.
It might drive brilliantly but look at it!
Great car for a blast no doubt but as a daily driver no way.

So changed the licence plate from this

    To this:

I like them. Just took me ages to put them on the car just had no time over the last month or so. Thanks to all for suggesting Eireplate and this style.

It varies. Tends to be Bridgestones on the GTI's, Continentals on the R. Not sure about the others.

Anybody out there getting a short (rattle is to strong a word) resonance possibly, from the sun visors when you either close the car doors or drive over a speed bump ?

Checked yesterday, and its the plastic cover over the mirror (on sun visor, when folded in usual position), resonating with the built in light built in the bulkhead, i.e. Plastic on Plastic...

Seems to have only started occurring recently...

Mine had it the day I collected it from the showroom. It's a common issue from what I read. I gave it a good main-dealer style thump with my fist and I haven't heard it since :pac:

Ive an annoying rattle from passenger door. Can't isolate it. Also after being parked up for a week the drivers window makes a strange groaning noise going down. It's almost gone now but need to keep an eye.

Had an absolutely ignorant older woman clip my mirror yesterday. Narrow road, parked cars on her side all the way, I pulled into a driveway a little to let her pass and she came flying down the road and clipped mirror with hers. Didn't bat an eyelid and kept going. Thankfully the black mark polished off easily. Still very annoying how unaware and ignorant she was. Was going 3 times the speed I would on that road and I wouldn't be a conservative driver.

You got away lightly... the indicator lens on the door mirrors cracks very easily in hits like that...

Yeah. It was one of those situations where I was almost afraid to look. Really enjoying the car now. It's very good all rounder. Obviously the R would be more fun, but they are very well done cars, the 3 models.

Pretty sure that works in any Golf with ACC and DSG! It's a really brilliant feature in stop-start traffic for sure, although there's been a couple of occasions where I thought "hold on, it doesn't look like the car is going to stop in time!" and I hit the brake myself. It's definitely not 100% foolproof...

I had read that the Adaptive Cruise following the car in front in stop start traffic was an R exclusive. Imagine my pleasant surprise after the car stops itself behind the car in front and when the lights go green and he pulls off, my own fires back up the engine and pulls off after him. Happy days! This car is going to make me immensely lazy. ACC has already destroyed me for other cars in the same way DSG did in the Mk5.

It's very difficult getting out of a car with all the mod cons like ACC/Autobrake and back in to something older/more basic.

Approaching a car on the motorway and wondering "why isn't it slowing down - I'm right behind it", then realising there's no such system in this car, and having to brake yourself - yes! brake yourself....

One thing I noticed with ACC is that it doesn't like heavy rain. Went to Dublin on Friday first decent spin in the car, somewhere near Newlands Cross it started to rain with all the spray and rain the ACC didn't pick up the car in front, took me by surprise. Otherwise it's a great piece of kit

That TSI is a very nice bit of kit Ron. Is it 150bhp?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 920 ✭✭✭Ron Burgundy II

Thanks... yeah it's a 150BHP, with the R-line kit was on offer when I was ordering the car.

Saw my first GTe's this morning on Tara street.

Looked really good in black with the day time running lights, and blue trim.

Can someone tell me when did the continuous red stripe from the grill through the headlight lens first appear on the current gti? Spotted some 141 regs on carzone but they appear to be missing. At home i have an old newspaper review of the mk7 which dates back to 2013 and the headlights have the red stripe. Is it only on the pp models maybe? ?

Since the beginning. But only on cars with xenons and xenons were not standard here until late 2014 ish.

Early Irish spec was miserable. Unless the original owner spec'd the car up properly (like I did!)... a lot of 132-142 GTI's out there with halogens, no climate control, no ACC, 17's...

Yeah I've noticed that alright joe. Currently own a mk6 with decent spec but am on the lookout for a mk7 and have noticed that you really need to be looking at 151 reg to get anything good. And those ones seem to be holding their value very well which is not good for my wallet!

Yeah they only upped the spec around November 2014 so there was probably very few decent spec'd 142's registered.

Living vicariously through this thread the last few weeks. Picking up my SEAT Ibiza Cupra in July. Basically a Polo GTI has the 1.8 TSI AE888 unit. Looking forward to it. Hoping they have some of the kinks in the android auto ironed out
