There is one hell of a nice looking 161-G reg Golf R Lapiz Blue in the car park that I can see from my apartment. I'm wiping up the drool from the floor as I type :):D

Got the GTD up to 55mpg on a trip to Limerick this weekend. Definitely improving with time. Cruise control set to 105kph. If you push on though it rapidly drops to 40mpg.

They improve a lot with mileage. Had close on 60k on my old FR184 and on the Waterford-Cork commute it did a pretty consistent high 50s to a tank driven normally. Admittedly it's mostly 100kph limit so the ideal kind of driving for economy.

The GTE seems pricey enough, BMW 330e is around 5k more afaik.

Does the gte have really big drl's in the lower bumper?
Thought I saw a golf like that and with blue trim. Bit aftermarket looking.
GTI models still on VW website today
No price for club sport even though it's advertised there too,

    Yeah I think it does.

The standard GTI is not being cut, it's still available. The Clubsport replaces the PP in the line up and it's about 500 quid cheaper than the R.

Why would any one buy a club sport when an R is only 500 euro more?
    Doesn't make sense.

Also that gte is 40 k after grants?!
    Way too much.

Anyone thinking of visiting a track in theirs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,796 ✭✭✭carsfan2

Would love to do a track day sometime I think not so sure about using my own car though.
I actually think the gti could be disappointing enough on a track.
It is a great compromise between comfort and performance on the road but might be a bit soft on the track and not fast enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,392 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

I'd say the gti is plenty fast for a track day. Great way to learn about your own car. There is the risk of rolling it 6 times into a wall of tyres though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,796 ✭✭✭carsfan2

Do you speak from experience of rolling it 6 times ?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,392 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

Thankfully not! But I did do a track day and found it useful for getting a proper feel for the car's balance that would be dangerous on public roads. Would recommend it. You feel how the car behaves on the limit and if you make a mistake, depending on the track you should have no issue. Found the R really needed to be on the brakes at turn in to get the back to come into play. It really just feels like it's fwd. Still good fun though.

This was the one I was at:

On the other end of the spectrum, I hired a Mk7 1.4TSi DSG in the UK the other week and was surprised by the Spec..

Manual headlights and wipers, no keyless entry or start.
And to top it off, windy handles on the back windows.
Quite odd, car was brand new, just 70miles on it.

I've a 162 Highline 1.4Tsi DSG 5dr here ready for a very happy driver to collect when he's back from hols on the 18th July.

Ordered 19th April so was expecting the half leather and standard 17" wheels - driver wanted to upgrade to the 18" Durban wheels, but they were out of budget :(

It was only when it arrived at the dealership that the dealer discovered it had been upgraded in the factory to 162 spec, so has the Full Leather, Darkened Rear LED lights and 18" Durban wheels - driver was feckin delighted when I told him :D

Very nice looking machine in that spec and pretty good value for money.

I'm happy enough with mine one, albeit with the 161 spec and manual.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,796 ✭✭✭carsfan2

For some reason we seem to be getting much better specs on the golf as standard than the uk which is unusual as we are used to it being the other way round.

I reckon the improved spec will be relatively short lived as the facelift will come in October for 2017. There is a chance they may call this a mark 8 if they can claim enough changes.

Spec on the highline is incredible now tbh. If you were to factory order the kit that its in them now back in 2012, you'd have been spending the guts of 10k on factory options!! Money down the toilet of course.

Hi ROR, my OH is picking up a similar golf with the same upgrades at the weekend. Was this a free upgrade or is there an extra charge for your customer?

The dealer contacted us about a month ago to say we got the upgrades but that it would cost an extra €600. Now it's great value at that but wondering all the same?

There is an additional cost involved. Dealer was hoping VW would swallow it, but they said they wouldn't (even for a large customer like ourselves).

Threaten to cancel as it's not what was agreed, and offer €400 extra and they should accept ;)

Split the difference with our supplier but the extra it's costing is going to more than made up on the resale price.

Didn't get a great shot when it arrived - see attached.

    Bonus exterior shot too.

Very smart looking car now in fairness. The only thing I'd personally be adding to it is xenons.

Thing is Joe if you needed a replacement xenon how much would it cost ??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,796 ✭✭✭carsfan2

That's a very complete car. Needs nothing except maybe Xenons as Joe says.
How much is that on the road r.o.r.?

Does anyone know if there are any different dash trims available other than piano black?
Ideally a factory option from another trim level.

Xenons are circa 1200-1400 euro, a little pricey? I didn't spec them, went with the R-Line kit and winter pack

R.O.R did they go for any extras?
