Would you consider using P+D Marty? I've the book here and no use for it, I'll post it up to you if you want it.

Cheers for the offer NE, have it here. Might give it another shot. Used it last year but maybe a bit to loosely. I might go for it again and follow it to the letter and see how that goes... I'll decide on a plan before the start of next week hopefully :) Thanks again for the offer, much appreciated :)

You're one or two cups shy of Onslo moobs! :D

See you at the SoG, signed up optimistically last week, everything should fall together for a glorious sub 1 hour comeback ;)

I've seen your recent activities on strava alright, hope the comeback is going well. The bikework will help a lot too, just keep it sensible like you are doing :)

Seems to be a lot of people picking up niggles and injuries around here lately. I'm almost afraid to go out the door nowadays for fear of tripping up and hurting myself :)

So I better throw up a few words...

So after Portumna I was left with some unanswered questions regarding where I actually am fitness/race wise. I also wanted something to set paces off for impending marathon training.
So, with that in mind, I believed the Monivea half fitted the bill nicely. Location and date suited my needs, so left registration until just before the race as it was to late to register online the night before :D

Arrived in Monivea around 10am and registered with no hassle. Met up with one or two lads for a bit of a chat about the course. Was told there a few inclines, nothing major just a few little drags here and there and the last mile is uphill as well :D
From looking around I could see that it would be a small field(113 finishers) and I didn't like the sight of that. I was a bit surprised by this, as it was named as the county half, and was dominated by one club(Athenry). The one thing I missed in Portumna was people running with me and had a feeling this could end up as a bit of a time trial as well. Not to worry, I was in good spirits and up for a good workout either way. Plan was go out at 1.30 pace and adjust on the go. Main aim was an honest effort and not give up if things get tough....

The race.... Race started a couple of minutes after 11 and we were off. The small field meant a good starting position about 4 rows(narrow) back. Those ahead of be I knew warranted their position up there :D
During the first mile There was a little movement position wise. A fair few people passed me easily enough and I let them go. REALLY tried to keep an eye on pace and not get carried away with the occasion. Mile 1 6:49

By the time mile 2 came along I was fairly settled into a pace but not many around me already. Signs were ominous I thought to myself briefly :) . Miles 3,4,5 were mostly downhill, and I backed off a little here thinking to keep something in the tank for the end. By this time I was more or less on my own. Tipping along nicely though, and not panicking about it.
    Mile2 6:47, Mile3 6:46, Mile4 6:50, Mile5 6:57

Mile 6 came and so did a few little rises. Nothing to mad, but they did slow the pace. Pace would drop on a bit on a hill, I'd crest it and just get pace going again when I'd hit another little drag and this repeated for the guts of 4 miles :D:D As this went on I started to struggle a little both mentally and physically. Legs started to feel a little heavy, and thoughts of "just getting a decent 10 mile time will do" came into the head briefly. I seemed to be able to knock the negative thoughts out of my head fairly easy thank god, but the legs didn't get much better. The were still going but not really responding when I asked for a pace increase the lazy fookers :)
    Mile6 6:55, Mile7 6:57, Mile8 7:04, Mile9 6:59

Really working hard now to try to keep pace. Swinging my arms, upright posture, head up , all the emphasis on form and blocking out tiredness and pain. In my head I was running at 5k pace or faster, but in fact I was down on required pace a little. Still though, I seemed to be making up places from here to the finish. Slowly, and I mean slowly but surely I'd reel in a runner ahead. There was no groups of runners, just one by one a single runner would be dropping back into my target zone. I'd focus all my energy on gaining on them and when in range I'd tell myself to pass them at a pace that they wouldn't think about fighting to keep with me. I believe the term I was using in my head was"burn the basturd" ... I do realize that my pace was not blistering or anything, but I use these little things to kind of play mind games with myself. If I manage to focus totally on something like that I forget about the pain :)
    Mile10 6:45, Mile11 6:56, Mile12 7:02

Heading into mile 13 and I feel like I'm just hanging on. Still picking of the odd runner but they are scarce now. Tell myself to give it a go to push on now but don't seem to be any pace increase. Few drags here and they seem like everest to me. Breathing heavy, but it's mostly in the legs that the problem is. Lead legs I call myself at this stage :D I'm still fighting though and that is what I wanted from this race. Arms swinging furiously and chin up to the skies for divine intervention and maybe I got it. Pain subsides briefly and I try to catch a craughwell runner ahead. Any gains I'm making are marginal and I realise I'm running out of road. I see him turn for home and realise he's home but I keep on pushing my way all the way to the finish. Mile13 6:54 (6:47)

No official results yet-surprisingly as red tag are usually good for this, but provisional results indicate 1:30:29, which would be what I reckon I got.

I "think" my PB was 1:31:04 from the flatline last year so maybe a 33 sec PB. Not a huge gain for all the miles but a step in the right direction non the less. I've no doubt I've more, and I'd say the flatline will be my next half.

I'm actually fairly pleased with the result given the course and conditions and it got me thinking... The course was known to have some hills in it and I wondered is this the reason of low numbers, are the majority of runners out for the flattest course possible all the time.....
Onwards to the streets of Galway.......
(sorry for such drivel by the way :)

Congrats on the pb :D Any demons that may have been lingering from Portumna (tbh I don't think you had many) were dealt with today - well done. I know you would've loved to dip under 90 but it wasn't to be - no doubt you'll smash it next time :)

First off thanks all for the kind words, ye are to nice really :)

Short recovery run on Sunday. Nice relaxed pace and just plodded along. Enjoyed it as I had a good nosey about parts of Renmore I wouldn't normally be in :D

Headed out for tonights run at 9:45pm and couldn't believe how warm/muggy it was out there at that late hour. Thank god I didn't get out any earlier

    Tuesday 30/06/2015 12 miles @ 7:51

Another trot out to salthill in this warm weather. Found it tough going in the heat. Right glute started to ache for the last 2 miles and worried me a little. I'll have to keep an eye on it. Probably head to the pitches tomorrow for a few gentle miles...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,140 ✭✭✭snailsong

    Catching up now...
Well done on the hm. You seem to have dug in really well. You should be well sub 90 by the flatline, I'll see you there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,140 ✭✭✭martyboy48

    Wednesday 01/07/2015 5 miles @ 8:50

Didn't go to the pitches in the end, did a couple of loops of the neighbourhood instead. Plenty of rain today for a change :D The glute made it's presence felt for the last two miles so I might take tomorrow off.
Was thinking about what could have caused it and the only thing I came up with was a dog avoidance incident. Lady walking dog on (long)lead and the dog veered over in front of me as I planted my foot. I instinctively rotated myself sharply while my full weight was on the one foot. That's the only thing that I could think of which might have done something... I don't know for sure though so will just have to mind it in the short term..

    Thursday 02/07/2015 Rest

    Saturday 04/07/2015 Rest

    Sunday 05/07/2015 18 miles @ 8:29

    Monday 06/07/2015 Rest

So, still managing to get some running done but have been taking a few rest days due to this pain in the ass glute issue. It's fine without running but comes on a few miles into the run. Maybe I should have thought twice before dropping the foam rolling from my routine :o

Either way, it has me a bit worried now in regards to DCM and I'm going to have to get it seen to if no improvement in next 2-3 runs...

    Tuesday 07/07/2015 5 miles @ 7:58

    Wednesday 08/07/2015 7 miles @ 8:08

Two runs started of nice but ended up being a pain in the ass :(

So, time to bite the bullet. Not running anymore until I get this seen to. Glute area still giving me trouble when into a run and not going away. Some Achilles tightness at times now as well, so don't want to risk anything catastrophic by running on when I know there's something up. Hopefully a quick fix but preparing myself for worst case scenario...

    Update...

No running since. Went to physio today who went to town on me. An old friend of TbL and Micilin Muc :D

Very impressed with her thought and work ethics...
History showed all my running injuries were on the right hand side. General pain, P.F, peroneal muscle and now glute.. Did like a 1 leg slight squat on left leg and not to bad, on right leg knee buckled inwards and falling over... She made me then do it in front of a mirror so I could see exactly and TBH I looked ridiculous :D

She proceeded to look at my mobility and range of motion and I started by calling me tight arse :D Then tight hammers, and even went down to tight toes.... I didn't even know you could have tight toes ffs.... But everything she said made sense, how I use the hamstrings more to compensate the lack of mobility and how I don't "flow on the downhills, just rapid short little steps..

She proceeded to pulverise my ass with thumb/knuckle/elbow or whatever other blunt instrument she could find and just to be sure she threw some javelin style needles in too :D:D

Basically, I need to free myself out first and foremost. I've a feeling this could take some time but I'm going to concentrate on this and get to a point much better than I was at. I always knew I was as flexible as an iron bar but never thought of the impact it could have on running and injury prevention, maybe I did, but put the blinkers on...

Plan... She gave me exercises to do which I must do regularly. Allowed on the bike and allowed swim(you'd know she's a triathlete, always allowed bike/swim :D ), and highly recommended yoga which I will have a go at...
Running wise, not much really... Allowed vigorous walks with short jogs in between but no full on running... Working up a sweat/workout to be done swimming/bike or like a power walk...

I'm glad I went and got some answers. At least I have a direction to go in now and will reassess targets over the next week or two...
Pity she wouldn't shut up about TBL though, the man is a god in there....

Sorry to hear that Marty. How long do you think you'll be out?
Sounds like AIS would be really beneficial for the inflexibility.
Best of luck with the rehab and hope it's not too long before you're tearing up the roads again :)

Hey A, Besides the short little jogs I'm allowed during my walks, she said I might be able for something a bit longer but gentle around friday after I see her again to see how I am.

AIS would surely be of help and I'm going to have to sit down and get some kind of regime going that I will continue with without the feeling that it is a chore.

I don't think it will be to long before I'm back running alright, but I'm seriously thinking of changing the focus of my short term goals.
Focus more on the body and getting it strong and agile enough for the work I am and want to be doing.
I feel I've been running all along with the body just not in the shape for the miles or workload I want to do and think I've been relatively lucky to have so few injuries so far. 1 step back for 3 steps forward kind of thing....

I could however scrap all that thinking the minute (if) she gives me the green light on Friday :o

A bit up in the air tbh... But getting there :(:)

    Log Update....

No running since...... 10 days and counting.....

Been out on the MTB a few times though, just on the road with it clocking up small miles just to get a bit of a sweat on. Arse just getting used the saddle again now....
Numerous stretching exercises being done daily even at work.
It's hard though seeing everybody out there running but sure I'll be back in some manner soon enough hopefully.

Had another appointment with physio yesterday and went through some more torture treatment with her. Various stretches/positions and some more needles/thumbs/elbows... Excruciating at times but know it's for a good cause :):)

I do get fairly frustrated though, some of the stretches/positions I'm supposed to get in, I seem to be way off so I know there's a long way to go. My lack of flexibility all along has me where I am now so I want to get back to be in a way better position than I was at before this injury.
Sunday she wants me to do walk 10 mins warm up followed by jog 3min/walk 5 mins for about 30mins very easy...
Tuesday walk 10 mins warm up followed by jog 5mins/walk 5 mins for same duration and so on like that.... At least I think that was the plan :(:o:o

She also has recommended me do do some yoga going forward and I think I will definitely look into it for next week.

Racing wise, I'm pulling the plug on DCM. Flatline mightn't be raced either I'll see closer to the time though. And the streets probably will not be raced either, just jog around more than likely. I just don't want to rush back into training plan/racing until I'm 100% happy that the body is at least the same or would prefer it to be in better condition than before.

It all sounds drastic but I'm comfortable with the decision and looking at the bigger picture... Come 26th October though, I know I'll be wishing I was out there....

    Sunday 19/07/2015 10 min walk, 4*(3min run/5min walk), 5 min walk

Monday 20/07/2015 Bike 10-11 miles urban MTB

    Tuesday 21/07/2015 10 min walk, 5*(4min run/5min walk), 5 min walk

Wednesday 22/07/2015 Bike 10-11 miles urban MTB

    Thursday 23/07/2015 5 min walk, 4*(1mile run/2 min walk)

    Friday 24/07/2015 Rest :D

So, there's my exciting week gone by....

Starting out the week, the work actually felt tough... WTF...

Gradually as I got into each "workout" it got easier, and further on the week it felt more natural to be running the "longer" distances :D
    Mobility work/stretches done daily....

Had a final app with physio today and given final instructions on how to progress from here.
Next week I'll be sticking to running 4-5 miles broken up with gradually shorter recoveries. running one day, bike the other day.
Following week I'm allowed continuous running and very gradually increase distance...
She did stress however That I really need to work on my flexibility/mobility for a prevention point of view, something which I needed no convincing on.
I meant to try and get some kind of scandal of her about TbL, but it slipped my mind. Damn it :D:D

Also, the subject of the streets of Galway came up and she kind of said I could give it a bash if I felt up to it from what I could gather reading between the lines..... Hmmmmmm

    Saturday 25/07/2015 5 min walk, 4*(1 mile run/1:45 walk), 5 min walk

Up to Dangan for this one for a change of scenery. Lovely day out there.
Felt good throughout and pace gradually increased for the mile runs, 7:55, 7:33, 7:15, 6:54. Should have been more disciplined as physio told me to keep this week easy so will have to be good for mondays run. Felt good though...
