Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

My Running Chaos

    So I've succumed to the idea of a training log :)

    It will not be filled with perfectly structured training, or perfectly executed races, well, not to begin with anyway. As the title suggests, my running to date is more or less based on regular running. "Sessions" have been few and far between, and I still struggle to maintain a desired pace without fluctuation.

    I hope by starting this log, I will at least put more thought into my running. I'd also like to look at some flexibility/strength/weight loss work, but this will have to be a gradual/long term, I don't want to try to do everything overnight as I know I'd soon get fed up and look at it as a chore.

    So, to me.. Started running back in June 2012 after giving up the smokes. For years I struggled to pack them in, but something was different with the last attempt. I think it was the first time I was truly ready to pack them in. Happy days since and no desire to have a smoke now at all thank God.
    Rapidly heading towards the O40 category now, but sure thats just a number :D

    Ran DCM last year as a novice under the excellent guidance of Career_Move and the 2013 novices. What a great journey that was... Memories :)
    And progressed with the 2013 graduates thread under the crosshairs of SamforMayo :D A lot of support on that thread from SfM,Bulmers,Ososlo,SeanPuddin and Co, great camaraderie altogether :)

    OH and just to let you know, this log with also be like a diary. As some of ye may know I can ramble on a bit at times :)

    NOTE: I'll also be very greatful of any advice, be it public on here or via PM. Good or bad, sometimes I need to hear what I know from someone else before it sinks in :)

    Next up, DCM 2014 . Heres hoping it's a good one :)

    Tuesday: 12.35km @ 5.13min/km Easyish (I may make up some new words in this log so be warned)

    Feeling ok for this. THe knee isn't to bad now, still feel it a bit, but it's not worrying or troubling me. Will continue to monitor it.
    On the monitor list now are a dodgy knee, 2 black toenails and a creak in my neck :D

    Thanks Ososlo :) DCM target not set in stone yet. As usual I struggle setting targets till the last minute. Want to set aggressive target though as have a go at it. Weather conditions(wind)may play a part though :) 3.15 or thereabouts (+/-1hr) :D
    For sure will meet you after. Sure aren't you keeping seats for us :)

    Good to see the log up & running Marty - best of luck. What's the plan for after DCM & for next year? You're close to a couple of round numbers - sub 40 10k & sub 90 half, when do you see yourself having a pop at these? Have you a plan or timeframe on times or is it more build a more solid structure & the times will come?

    Yes if Marty persists with this, we will have to insist that he only runs distances that we can divide by 8 easily. It could be the bases of a very interesting plan.

    Wednesday: 17.4km @5.10min/km(6*1km @5k pace)

    Well, it's been a while since I did anything like this so was a bit apprehensive going into it :) . After 5k warm up I started off. Plan was a 2 min recovery jog in between but by the second rep it was 2 min walk recoveries :D
    Bought a garmin 310xt lately and getting the hang of programming workouts :D 5k pace to me was 4min/km so set range to 3.50-4.00min/km. Problem is that every time it beeped for going outside this, I kicked a bit and the result was a bit faster than planned :) 3:55, 3:47, 3:47, 3:50, 3:46, 3:47, no wonder I had to walk :D
    5 and a bit km cooldown after. Tired but satisfied....

    After DCM I'll probably wind it back a little and regroup :D Next year there's a little something I have in mind but will wait for the new year to see how things are, ya know yourself ;)
    Those round numbers. When I started out I was in awe of them, now I want to smash those fookers :D Fields of Athenry10k on St Stephens day I plan to go at that pace and see how I go, it will be a bench mark at least to see where I am for a full on go in the new year. 5k time I want to get down a bit too, the galway 5k series and maybe even the Mayo one will ghet me used to racing them which will be of huge benefit I think.
    Timeframes and what approach I take will be decided in new year most likely.

    Miles??? MILES????? It's kilometers now don't ya know. Sure aren't we all EuroBEANS now :D
    I suppose with all the changes I'm making with this log an all, I suppose I'll change to miles so....... But it will be after DCM :)

    If you are thinking of doing the Mayo race series it will have to be miles as we have none of them fancy European ways around here. Nice session there, well done.

    Thursday 02/10/2014 24km @5:05/km ~ 15miles @8:11/mile

    Headed out for this one with an open mind on pace. Fairly windy here around the west today and being the donkey I am I decide to head out along the salthill promenade for it :D Found it tough going running into the wind so just tried to go on effort.
    Nice evening for it, bit of a chill in the air which I like and not to many around :)

    Looking forward to Athlone 3/4 this weekend, still deciding on how to run it. Next day or two I'll finalize it after reading over the thread on it :)

    Thanks for the miles! Did you do Athlone last year? It's a great run but fierce hilly! Would you go with the pacers?

    Ya, I did it last year alright albeit at a slower pace and without MP miles so I either didn't notice the hills to much or I blocked them out of my memory because of the pain :-D
    Will probably go out alone but if I fall into a pace group well thats cool too :-)

    Late enough getting out for this but enjoyable all the same.
    Bird from passing car commented on "my fine arse".... I'll take it, it beats the usual "run fat boy, run" I used to get :D

    Tomorrow I'll finalize the plan for Athlone, didn't get a chance this evening with me making cheesecake.... #GordonRamseyWannabe :D

    Cheers DOCO, ya, I have to do my bit with the conversions :) TBH, it is good for me too to get to remember and learn some equivalent paces :)

    Thanks, should be grand. Cheesecake was lovely but nephews sniffed it out and went to town on it... I was lucky to get a bit at all :D
    I have a 17 or 18 mile the following week and then it will go back some more. I'm hoping some baking will get me through the taper madness :)

    Saturday 04/10/2014 10.4km @5:17 ~ 6.5 miles @8:30/Mile

    Supposed to be a recovery pace but turned out a bit faster. Down to the local pitches like the bird of prey from Mayo.
    Since I started to get the knee pain, I've moved all my recovery runs to the pitches. I couldn't be certain but I believe it has helped the knee a lot. knee is 98% right again. I'll probably continue to use these pitches though, almost bang on 1km loop :)

    Sunday 05/10/2014 31.7km @4.58 ~ 19.7miles @ 8:00/mile(Athlone 3/4)

    Settled on a plan for this late last night. Plan was as follows;
    0-10km - Easy running no pace target
    10-20km - Target 5:00km/min (8:00min/mile)
    20km-30km Target 4:35-4:40km/min (7:30min/mile)
    30km-finish Jog it home

    Enjoyed this and pretty much hit targets. Headed out by myself and did my own thing. Pretty sure I saw Meno(at least I'm sure it was him :D) at the start, but was to focused to go say hello, after DCM for sure.

    Pace dropped briefly for a couple of the faster reps towards the end but this was due to the hills and I pretty much recovered once I was over them so this didn't concern me to much. Decided briefly to keep that pace to the finish but said fook it when I saw another hill :D Enough done for the day I said to myself, managed to kick on a bit for the finish and felt strong.
    Nice lemon miwadi for a change at the end. Was absolutely freezing after sitting in the grass for few mins. Fingers numb and near shaking. Off to the car, heat on and a few tunes, all good again.
    Had a nice buzz driving home. Was a bit nervous going into this but concider it a success.
    My only problem now is team bulmers74/TbL... Bulmers is flying it and his confidence is high. Pretty sure TbL had a sniper waiting for me at mile 20 in Dublin....
    I need nidge to watch my back......

    Monday 06/10/2014 Rest


    Tuesday 07/10/2014 13.8km @5:05/km ~ 8.5miles @ 8:03/mile (5*600)

    Tuesday called for 13km with 5*600 @5k pace(4:00/km).
    Times were, 2:20, 2:25, 2:22, 2:24, 2:24 - 1min jog recoveries.
    Not to bad, out along the prom again with the wind in every direction.
    Legs were stiff/tight going into it but really loosened out by the time I got to the 600's.

    Need to buy shorts and socks and dump some tops. I've an awful lot of sh1te accumulated between old trainers/tops and shorts that are well past it no more than myself :)

    Nice run out salthill again, went out behind golfcourse/driving range as a recent race said they had finished the storm repairs but turned out it's still not quiet finished :D Not bad though, just a little more tarmac, hopefully before 25th Dec :D

    Got another pair of brooks adrenalines, in go faster red this time.....

    Easyish run down for a few laps of the pitches and attempted 6*100 strides.
    The usual head out when it's bright and return an hour later in darkness. Must dig out some of my reflective gear..........

    Easy/recovery run. Legs a bit tired/tight so took a handy one. Lovely evening for it, seemed to be loads of people out running today.

    Really tired lately, not tired like I didn't sleep last night(still getting usual qty), just tired in general. Find myself nodding off on chair at night. Hopefully its just the training over the last few weeks and will improve during taper period...

    I'm the exact same Marty. I'm fine running etc but come evening time I'm not very good company. I'm good for bed early but cannot sleep in. Hopefully the taper will sort us.

    Hopefully it will. It's probably to be expected at this stage of the plan but I think I'm turning into a Victor Meldrew type of character sometimes lately :D

    Last long run of note, took it casual and didn't do any MP miles. Was only when I got home that I thought maybe I should have... Fook it, it's done anyway :)

    Seen on DOCO12's log she going to make effort with foam rolling. I think I should follow suit. On the runs lately I'm getting a bit of cramping in my right calf. Nothing to serious I hope as it only lasts about 30 seconds at a time. Running while toes pointed up(heel striking) usually sorts it. It's not at the end of a run either or a tough one, it just pops up the odd time lately... So another thing on my to do list :D

    excitement build on a daily basis, every day in work I'm reminiscing DCM'13 and all it's emotions... What a roller coaster that was..... Ahhhhh.. Good times :)

    Bit of a rush to get this done, had a few bits to do around the house and had car booked in for NCT this evening.
    A nice little run in and around the town and back out. Was fairly cool out there until I got warmed up fully.
    Sitting in the NCT centre confident but nervous at the same time, just like I'll be at the starting line on the 27th. Lets hope the run goes as well as the car :)

    A nice short easy run this evening.
    Went a bit crazy as I ended up going out with heavy jacket and gloves... WTF... No full moon either :D

    I do some silly things leading up to a marathon :)

    Thursday 16/10/2014 11.7km @ 4:59 ~ 7.25miles @ 8:01/mile (3*1600)

    Okay, first time doing 1600's so was interested to see how it went.
    4km warm up and went into it. Legs didn't seem up for it but they usually look for an easy way out :)
    First one I found tough going, 3min recovery jog and off again. Second one I felt a little better but still having to push. Another 3min recovery and the last one I struggled with a bit more but finished it out. About a 2 km cooldown.
    Times were 6:26, 6:24, 6:34(:eek:)

    Overall happy out, new experience for me and something to go at again in future.
    I should plan these run a little better in future. I decided on a loop of about a mile to do this on, a loop which I didn't really put enough thought into. There was a section of residential entrances where the path was up and down which I wasn't comfortable running on and a 90degree turn in the dark which I was uneasy about.
    Not saying it was the cause of the pace drop, just wasn't 100% comfortable.

    Made a batch of brownies tonight, lovely smell of chocolate around the place but will have to wait till tomorrow before sampling them :)

    Okay, first time doing 1600's so was interested to see how it went.
    4km warm up and went into it. Legs didn't seem up for it but they usually look for an easy way out :)
    First one I found tough going, 3min recovery jog and off again. Second one I felt a little better but still having to push. Another 3min recovery and the last one I struggled with a bit more but finished it out. About a 2 km cooldown.
    Times were 6:26, 6:24, 6:34(:eek:)

    Overall happy out, new experience for me and something to go at again in future.
    I should plan these run a little better in future. I decided on a loop of about a mile to do this on, a loop which I didn't really put enough thought into. There was a section of residential entrances where the path was up and down which I wasn't comfortable running on and a 90degree turn in the dark which I was uneasy about.
    Not saying it was the cause of the pace drop, just wasn't 100% comfortable.

    Made a batch of brownies tonight, lovely smell of chocolate around the place but will have to wait till tomorrow before sampling them :)

    Ya, was all part of the plan. The running of 3*1600 was in the plan but probably geared more to someone who has been doing sessions like this more often.
    After DCM and with the watchful eye of this log I will be doing at least 1 session.a week, something I haven't been doing before.

    The baking was part of a plan in work :-) surprised a couple of the women and they are now baking for me :-D

    It's very relaxing and therapeutic during the taper period...

    Friday 17/10/2014 8.5 km @ 5:52/km ~ 5.25 miles @ 9:26/mile Recovery

    A nice relaxed recovery run. The easy effort and thoughts of DCM in my head made for an enjoyable run. Was smiling to myself the whole way around.

    Brownies went down a treat at work and with family... I'll have to make a balls of the next thing I bake or they will be expecting great things all the time :D

    Saturday 18/10/2014 10.6km @ 5:23/km ~ 6.5 miles @ 8:40/mile w/strides

    Easy pace down to the pitches for a few laps. Half dozen strides at the end. For these strides I said I'd wouldn't look at the watch for exact time/pace/distance. I said I'd go and count to 20. I did it the toddler way, 1,2,3,4,5-1,2,3,4,5-1,2,3,4,5-1,2,3,4,5 :D:D Made sure my counting speed didn't increase with running pace and actually found it a lot better than being "exact" like I used to, by repeating a set known distance up and down...

    Fairly breezy out there today, grand for an easy run, not so good for a race :)

    Was the pitch not wet? Maybe the county board should be spending their money elsewhere... How are the nerves holding up?
