What car do you drive I think I remember you saying it was a golf mark4 tdi if so that;s the same as my daily now and I usually run it on past the empty line until the guage doesnt move on startup because as I do 450-550 miles a week I'd be forever in the damn filling station lol at least I'm not in a leaf (yet lol) that will redefine my definition of "range anxiety" lol :)

Yep it's a golf mk5 1.9tdi. Ah it is very good on diesel. Going by the long term trip it's reading 5.5 l/100km over 7000 km so 52mpg and that's somewhere in an around what I'd get if I calculate it on longer trips you'd easily get 55mpg. It will be interesting to see how much better dads mk7 will be :)

Had a close enough one today. Said I'd wait to get to kilkenny to get diesel as it was cheaper plus I'm fussy about getting it in certain places / brands. 1 mile outside clonmel light comes on I was getting nervous by the time I got to kilkenny it's probably the guts of 50km. The range was reading 70km put gauge was practically on 0 when pulling into garage. 55l tank took 53.6l to fill I know you have to allow for the fuel filler pipe but that doesn't hold that much. It's the first time I've driven to almost empty bring on the light since I got it. I don't know how people do it everyday it makes me nervous.

As my dad says, never let the tank get very low, it'll only bring the dirt up  :pac:

I get that a lot. It's the first time the light was on since I got it so I should be ok :)

I ran out of petrol on the Motorway... not a fun experience, but I'll never trust my fuel gauge again!!!

Luckily it was just outside Newbridge, so a friend helped out :)

Not sure what them readings are. on my old van you could check what injection quantity adjusment was being done to produce a smooth idle. If a cylinder was underpowered it would increase the IQ and reduce if it was overpowered. The readings were simlar to above with a tolerance of +\- 2.0 mg /stroke. Not sure on the units. You would need to know what the +\- spec is for you car and also what is it exactly its reading. Your mechanic maybe knows this spec. Its only an indication of the cylinder being underpowered so it could be poor compression or a faulty injector. Only guessing here :). The known good injectors will hopefully diagnose it.

The mechanic said the readings are more or less perfect, 3 of them aren't fantastic could wouldn't cause any issues.
I'm hoping for that too :)

Bear1 I had similar in my Pisshat. Turned out to be the lobes on the camshaft which had worn badly. Ultimately it became constant. Diagnostic checks always came back ok.

I really hope you're wrong :( it's an expensive fix if I'm correct?

fingers crossed. I'm guessing his passat was a pd tdi so the injectors are pressurised by lobes on the camshaft. Wouldn't be to worried about yours having that problem.

I don't think too much on my fuel economy, when it's 1/4 i just fill it up, chancing your arm never works out tbh

I think that's where I went wrong this morning trying to get to cork and back on just barely over 1/4 of a tank 330 km although made it all the same.

Well, I was only 7 miles short! Pretty decent

I think I would've made it if I hadn't done some overtaking after Kildare :pac:

The 530d has often given me the famous ---- signalling 0 miles left.
They always keep a bit in reserve.

Tis a conspiracy and all that :)

OK all this talk of boot lights got me to go out and check again. KSL, you were right. The S60 doesn't have one but TWO boot lights. They were both disconnected for some reason. I feel like a right tit

Its been 10 days since I solved my boot light mystery. Car hasn't died or exploded or anything. New mystery is why they were disconnected. I'm guessing is because of the tow bar.

Anyone at all knowledgeable on Peugeot's (French cars in general?) and their steering set ups?

My power steering is being a bit iffy. It's cutting out a bit here and there and gets stiff randomly. When I first bought the car I was told the steering rack is leaking, which was fair enough. The mechanic that diagnosed it at the time said it'd be in and around €250 or so to get fixed, he reckoned.

When I got the car home to my own mechanic, he filled the power steering fluid tank with a thing called Stop Leak. He said it might fix the issue, or if not, it'd at least be a short term fix. Sure enough, the steering was perfect for about 5-6 weeks. Used about half a bottle on it.

Then it started again, so I got a bottle of the Stop Leak and again, tank took about a 1/4 of the bottle, but no more issues for 5-6 weeks. Bottle was costing about €20 off mechanic, so I figured this quick fix would do me for good (rather than splashing out to fix it properly).

So again, in the last week or so, I get some stiffness and reach for my trusty bottle of Stop Leak, and the car is grand for the day. Come out the following morning and first thing I notice is the pool of fluid on the ground underneath the car, where the power steering fluid goes. (might have been there since day one, but I only noticed it this week).

So the steering is a bit ropey since. I decide to mooch a bit further and I discover that when the engine is off, my power steering fluid is pretty high in the tank. The cap has a little dipstick built onto it, and the fluid is very nearly pouring over. However, when you turn the car over, the fluid drains down into the bottom of the tank (well, what you can see of it anyway) and sits down there (looking like it's empty).

So effectively, what I think has caused the 'leak' on the ground, is that I filled the tank while the car was running, and then when I stopped it later on, the fluid all came back up and overflowed out of the cap (which has a little hole on it, for this reason, I presume).

I've googled about and no one really seems to have any answer to the problem (despite it being, apparently, a common enough 407 issue).

Was wondering if anyone here had encountered it at all?

(I could be wrong but I'm lead to believe the Peugeot 407 and the Citron C4 (or C5?) are essentially the same car underneath? So I'd imagine both have these issues).

Would anyone have any idea on the best way forward? I'd rather not throw a load of money at the car fixing everything if it turns out it's just one small bit that's in need of repair.

The most useful thing i've read so far online was this:

    question wrote:
I have an 04 peugeot 407 that has just had a new steering rack fitted, since i got the car back the esp warning lamp is onHow do i get it reset.I have noticed that power steering fluid is being forced out of the hole in the filler cap.and the steering goes heavy on the left hand lock due to lack of fluid.I top it up again but it comes back out of the lid.I had already had a recon rack on with the same fault so thought the rack was faulty so had it replaced againbut this one is doing the same thing.could it be fault in the rack or could it be the pump
    answer wrote:
THE RETURN VALVE ON THE PUMP IS NOT WORKING SO I WOULD GET THE PUMP CHECKED AND HAVE A LOOK AT THE PIPES BECAUSE THEY CAN CAUSE IT

But I am dubious of the site for some reason. Figured it'd be no harm to ask here. Figured maybe the likes of DGT or such might know this kinda thing inside out better than most?

EDIT, then again, someone here is saying this:

Have you added any fluid to the power steering pump?, if you have and its not FLUIDE DA, drain the system, it will never work right without the right fluid in the system, go to any Peugeot agent and get fluide da, about £10, anything else will not work in that system, fill 25mm above the max mark, had the same problem, a garage put dextron11 in mine and i had the same symptoms as you,it would throw the fluid out through the hole in the cap, and power steering failure on left hand bends at 30mph, my car is 100% spot on now with the right fluid in it, its worth a try before paying out for a pump you may not need good luck

Apparently the 'right' stuff is a coffee/creamy colour, and the stuff people usually use, that's wrong for the car, is pink (which is what I've been using). Maybe that might help... (fingers crossed!).

Just witnessed a hit and run outside my house!

My neighbour reversed her beat up zafira into a new ish rav 4..
She was reversing at speed and the towbar hit the rav4 back drivers side door and it's ruined completely!

The worse bit is next, she goes gets her husband out to have a look at the damage and after they have a nice feel of the dent in the rav4 door they have a laugh about it and drive off without even leaving a note :-(

So I wrote a note for the poor owner saying I witnessed it all and my phone number etc..

So disgusted by my neighbours she probably has no license or insurance going by how bad a driver she is!

    Good on you for that.

If I were you, though, I wouldn't say anything to your neighbor. Inter-neighbor relations, no matter how scummy the neighbors are, are key. Saying it to her will probably just open up a world of hate and crap.

    What a scum bag though.

I think it's normal for the level to drop with the engine running. Increased pressure reduces the volume in the rack(too hungover for science :)). You need to drain the system and fix the leak. I doubt the stop leak functions as hydraulic fluid. If it didn't stop the leak I'd stop using it and get the leak sorted.

Would you not give them a chance to own up to it themselves when they come back? Maybe the husband will deal with it. From what you said it doesn't seem likely, and they appear to be dIcks. Just don't jump up straight away. As bad as things are, you don't want to ruffle feathers with the neighbours!! :)

I'm yet to find a pay at pump that will accept a debit card. Why? There's a petrol station around the corner that's good 3c a litre cheaper than anywhere else. When we pulled in realised it was all pay at pump, no kiosk anywhere. Looked a lot more modern and figured as it was all pay at pump it'd be a lot more sorted than normal. Put card in, nope rejected. Tried another card, nope rejected. Travelled 2 miles down the road, and paid €70 for a tank of petrol on the same card I tried the first time. I know Tesco try to reserve €99 before you pump, so figure that's the norm but there was a lot more in there than that any time I've tried and still they never work. PITA.

I used a greatgas station recently and it was unattended; only pay at pump. It accepted the debit card fine and I could select from a few pre-auth caps.

Hey your right she saw me looking at her reversing into the jeep as I was walking home from shopping myself...i went into my house and watched it all unfold after that...i left my phone number but not my name on the note....hope the jeep owner spots it, bright yellow post it note on his windscreen...I didn't say a word to the neighbours and I won't anyway as they are off to Church for the lolz

    Cheers Interslice.

Anyone know if draining it is difficult? Is there a cap somewhere (like when draining oil)?

Kinda hoping the whole thing doesnt need changing as apparently it's fairly pricey :(
