Must say even at 20 euro it doesnt impress - a cable from your laptop to the TV is far more reliable unless you have a good wifi setup. Tried netflix last night and it was patchy. Obviously handy if you want to view stuff on your phone though.

I've a HDMI cable that I use to put my streams on to the tele. So are you saying that the Chrome Cast doesn't really do anything extra for a laptop? Mostly used for phone apps?

only got it yesterday so havent really put it through its paces but cant really see that it does anymore than a cable. Also you can only cast from within an application and not all applications are castable!

It does however have the advantage that you can cast to the tv from any phone / tablet or laptop once linked to your wifi network so I suppose for 20 lids it is fair enough

Kinda. I can send pics from the phone to the TV and play movies that are not avi via my home network. Any avi movie I have to play using a usb hard drive plugged directly into the TV or via a laptop and HDMI cable as CC doesn't support these. Using Videostream chrome app plugin on the laptop to stream them isn't great and I might as well just plug the drive in to the TV. (I could also convert it to play on the CC but it's not worth the bother). I bought one at £30 and it's useful but I'd use it fairly rarely....

Depending on your phone and version you can mirror your whole screen. And the idea is, you don't have to use the cable for most people, I use both but trying to get rid of having to use the cable at all.

For anyone who owns a Nexus 7 2012 version and wants to stream web videos aside from the likes of YouTube etc, I found Web Video Caster. Tried it out, and it works brilliantly for me playing streams from URLs.

Will do me nicely ahead of the Premier League on Saturday. Quality on TV from casting is seemingly even better that what I see on a laptop screen. There I was thinking that us Nexus 7 2012 users weren't able to do such a thing :pac:

No it's based on the chromeOS. It doesn't run off Android like the old Android TVs.

Hey guys, sorry for the tech question in BA, but I have an OOOOLLLLDDD plasma tv. (No HDMI)
What I do have however, is a HDMI to AV connector.

Will this let me use the Chromecast on my TV?

You could also use Plex, on your PC/Laptop, or from any Android in your network, you need Plex media server installed on the source device, and you will probably?? have to pay for the Plex app on Android, maybe

It can transcode media which is not natively supported by CC, and you control streaming via Plex Web App on PC/Laptop or your Android.

There is also Bubble UPnP, which can also transcode, and has it's own media server, and AllCast, which apparently can too, but you gotta pay for it.

You can also cast photos and video from G+ and Dropbox, in the Cloud, play music from Google Music natively, and Pandora if you got a method....[Smart DNS]....

And BBC iPlayer, naively supports CC now, as does the G+ App....not forgetting Netflix, HuLu , and other unmentionable apps.

And it is growing by the day....

You don't need any of those cables, unless for something very specialised.

You get more for your money though spending more but you are right if you are not looking to spend that much then parcel motel is the answer.

There may be a better option in Ireland now, I'll check, but when I bought it was what it is now, around £30, so I missed by being early.

What an ignorant post. Perhaps you didn't understand his post? If there is something else you are looking to purchase that is available on Amazon and would bring the total over to over £25 (I bought coffee beans which I would have bought anyway), then you will get free shipping to Ireland. Your Chromecast would then cost you €22.65, which is a smaller number than €26.85.

Kinda immaterial now anyway. given the price has gone up.....

But to achieve that magic number you needed to purchase another item, you may not even want, for at least £7 + Irish VAT with your £18 unit.
