Looking forward to next week when the usual suspects put forward any old preposterous theory to fit whatever happens on the show myself!
I still don't see how he really expected The Mountain to confess to being ordered to kill his sister, if he was or not. And getting killed at King's Landing doing a favour for a Lannister wouldn't get him many favours back home.

PS: It does now look like hacking cringing random peasants to bits wasn't all that great preparation for a trial by combat!

At the time that Tyrion send Myrcella south, Robb Stark was still alive and had won every battle. Stannis was still threatening Kings Landing. The alliance with the Tyrells had not yet been brokered. Arryn and Martell were undeclared. The Lannisters were surrounded by enemies. Giving the Martells a hostage was a small price to pay to keep them out of the conflict.
But if the Lannisters were rightly screwed and the Martells hate them, why didn't they just pile in and finish them off? Or Dorne for that matter.

Thats a good question. Why didn't they?

ps: The Martells are the ruling house of Dorne

Well they might have been promised a marriage to Joff, but wouldn't they need to commit troops rather than just stay out of it for that sort of pay off.

EDIT: oops, Dorne/Martell one and the same. Why did the Tyrells even side with them? What did any house have to gain from leaving the Lannisters in power?

Ah, I think you're confusing the Martells and the Tyrells.

The Tyrells are the ruling house of the Reach. They originally backed Renly. When Renly was killed, Littlefinger brokered the marriage between Margeary and Joffrey. As part of this deal, the Tyrells have joined forces with the Lannisters, the are actively at war with Stannis and Mace Tyrell has been named Master of Ships.

The Martells are the ruling house of Dorne. During Robert's Rebellion they sides with the Targaryens. They have yet to declare for either side, but they hate the Lannisters. Of course they have no real love the Starks or Baratheons either.

For reference, the current great houses are:

    The North - Bolton
    Riverlands - Baelish
    Iron Isles - Greyjoy
    Westerlands - Lannisters
    The Reach - Tyrell
    Dorne - Martell
    The Vale - Arryn
    Stormlands - Baratheon (Stannis)
    Crownlands - Baratheon (Tommen)

Great episode. The ending caught me by surprise. I was full sure he had him but I guess on reflection it was all building towards him getting killed with his cockiness/the wine/speech to his lover/not finishing him off.

No I can see what he Tyrells are getting out of it, or were anyway before Joff bought the farm. I just don't see what they were getting from their perspective at the start of the entire war when Sansa was still queen.
Tyrrell v Martell didn't come across in the show for me anyway.

    Sansa was never queen.

The Tyrells backed Renly at the start of the war, with Margeary Tyrell as his queen. After Renly was killed, they sided with the Lannisters once Littlefinger had brokered the marriage between Margeary and Joffrey (after which Sansa was set aside).

I liked Oberyn, but I agree entirely about how odd his freedom of the city was. How can you have a guest at your palace who openly claims to want to kill every Lannister in Westeros? What was Tywin expecting from Oberyn except trouble?
Tywin wasn't expecting Oberyn, he was expecting his brother

As opposed to facing the mountain in single combat and he probably won't say what you want him to anyway?
If you think Tywin is guilty then I know which one is more likely to get him TBH.

He had the Mountain beaten, and probably thought he could torture him into confessing, and maybe he would have if not for his slip up?

But she was in King's Landing already for this to happen.

On first glance you need to swap the Martell and Tyrell families ;)

    Just swap Tyrell and Martell.

And Baelish isn't really a house yet, just a man. He's been granted Harrenhal but never been there as far as I recall. We've never been shown what became of Riverrun and the Tullys after the Red Wedding, so it's hard to say who controls the Riverlands.

    Edit:It's probably the Freys.

No, we don't know what the situation in the riverlands is, but Baelish is officially Lord of Harrenhal and Lord Paramount of the Trident. Of course this is mostly a paper title, he doesn't have the armies to back it up at the moment.

Having a majorly antagonistic adversary as an invitee at a state occasion seems a bizarre thing to nitpick over as it still happens even nowadays.

When Charles get crowned in the next few years, every head of state in the commonwealth, almost the world, will be there, and lots of them will have to kept apart to stop fighting between them, and quite a few delegates would be happy to stick a dagger in Tywin Cameron if given a chance. Yet all still have to be invited, and a pretence of civility kept. Hopefully Obama won't get drunk again and try to cop off with the Swedish girl like at Joffr Mandelas funeral.

Yes he's still alive. He was injured during the battle of the blackwater and we haven't seen him since.

Would be great to have him back. Some of his scenes were classical!

Pretty sure they already did when the Hound cut Baeric Dondarrion in half last season.

They already did? Beric Dondarrion might ring a bell.

It'd be a pretty awful cop out if Thoros of Mir went skipping around reviving everyone's favourite characters though, don't you think? Surely he has a lengthy cooldown on that special ability. :p

Also, since he can't actually heal the injuries that led to death, Oberyn wouldn't be quite as charming afterwards.
