Stop voting? Maybe. I don't know many under 25s TBH, but more of the people I do know have gone SF than ever before.

Always? Doesn't look like it TBH. SF and independents are on the up every election it seems.

SF perform well in local elections, but not in general elections, it's just a fact of life.
Maybe in 2 or 3 generations they will gain the trust of people when they start showing some proper policies & the old guard are gone, but until then they will sit on the sidelines & watch everyone else make the real decisions

We obviously move in different circles.

No political party will go into govt with Sinn Fein, so if they want in, you'll have Ming as Tanaiste & Mick Wallace as minister for defence

Or we could just go with the 'knowledgeable' John O'Donoghue and smiling Charlie McCreevey..!! Now there's a tour de force..:D

Go ahead mate, I couldn't care less.

I have no more time for the royals than i do for devalera.

    Nationalism is for morons.

And if you think you'll offend me by pointing out historical facts you're sorely mistaken.

I don't intend to offend. And this isn't about my political views. I just like to point out when someone is being willfully disingenuous. More so when I see them hiding behind the semantics of language.

'Dev signed a book of condolences for Hitler.'
This conveys one message and is not true.

'Dev signed a book of condolences for the German people on the death of their head of state.'
This conveys another and is true.

Today is a victory for Irish emigrants. Ireland's massively entitled welfare class and non-taxpayers, those who keep demanding more money for themselves from the pockets of everyone else despite having the second most progressive tax system in the world and one of the most generous welfare systems in the world, have shown their power today and proven, beyond doubt, that Ireland is not worth returning to. That Ireland's future is not a bright one
Hmmm. It was under the enlightened stewardship of FG that hundreds of thousands of Irish men and women (myself included) had to emigrate. I'll not be mourning their demise should a political alternative emerge. That's be one that can actually make a break with the follies of the past and does simply stand for 'more of the same'.
Fair play to you for taking time out of raping your relatives to post here. Always interesting to have the views of an Ireland trapped back a few hundred years ago weigh in on today's issues.
And now I've wasted time replying to a troll. Bugger.

I wouldn't be so sure of that.

Tbh, Sinn Fein would be better staying as an opposition party until the General election after the next one. They'll grow stronger again.

Something Labour should have done but €€€€€ was too tempting.

Are you talking about the FG of the current government? Or a previous FG government?

Hundreds of thousands may have left the country. But many of them were not Irish. And we got hundreds of thousands coming in as well as the ever increasing population will show. Did you end up in a country with no property tax or water charges?

SF have recently done well in local elections, no reason to think they wouldn't do well in this one.
It's a protest vote, against the mainstream partys, but when it comes to a general election, people back away, it's one thing to let them in charge of tarmacing bothareens, it's another giving them charge of our entire economy.
I never understand guff like this , people seem to think that FF FG LB have nothing but geniuses in their parties , super intelligent people and the country would fall apart without all of their combined brainpower . Even after the chosen leaders of these parties are proven crooks , corrupt and inept people just keep voting these parties back into power

Now i am not affiliated with SF in any way but i want them to be given a chance , the old guard have had their time and they have ruined this country and ruined all of our kids futures

But people just keep voting for them ,afraid to go a different route, and in a way they cant be blamed for that as they have been brainwashed and told on tv that if you decide to vote a different way things will get even worse

It reminds me of when you decide to split up with someone and you tell them you no longer love them cause you think they are crazy and they beg you to stay and tell you that they know they are crazy but your next partner will probably be crazier

Desperation and people keep falling for it

Ah ok ... i see now, it was all just an error of linguistics the whole time.

So just to be sure lets clear this up -

Neither the Republic of Ireland, nor DeValera were in any way pro-nazi/pro-Germany at the time of WW2.

I mean you'd be willing to say that right.

Sinn Fein's only hope at "power" is to be the junior partner in Government to FF. FF will form a coalition with SF but will absolutely not play ball when it comes to decision making, rendering SF to be completely incapable in their position there and will thus go the same way Labour have with FG.

Ireland isn't completely retarded, despite what today's results may lead many to believe. There will never be a time where SF, or indeed any of the hard left parties, get a majority government.

Following the massive corruption, incompetence a self serving idealism which complete idiots voted FF? I mean Tom Gilmartin's son was on the Late Late recently talking about the massive corruption and mafia like tactics they displayed and yet someone (maybe suffering from psychosis or other mental illness) said YES THEY SOUND GOOD FOR THE COUNTRY!! Lolllll!. I don't mind how the party behaves to be honest what bothers me is the complete dimwits I have to breathe the same air as in this country.

Labour's long term level is about 10%. Like a lot of other parties they gained last time out from the FF meltdown. I expect they will not be far of their 10% over the long term future.

    Yes.

SF gain this time from the voters desire to punish Labour.
FG gain last time from the voters desire to punish FF.

Labour's long term level is about 6% now and dropping.

I'm still shocked anyone believes their bull**** about being left wing after being in coalition with FF. Die Labour die.

You are right. They are getting in to strong positions on the councils now so lets see how they perform. A lot of their candidates are well educated people who might bring a bit of innovation and initiative. Take the Northern aspect out of the equation and there isn't a whole difference between SF and the rest. And even then the Northern situation is decided by the Good Friday Agreement anyway. When it comes to the general election the way it is going we could need three parties to make a government. But with the way the vote is breaking down now there are several possibilities.

It will be very interesting to see how SF MEPs perform.

Now that the election is over and Sinn Féin appear to be doing quite well. There'll probably be a corresponding drop off in Sinn Féin bashing threads. But I'm predicting that the next spike in such threads, will probably occur 7-10 day before the next election.

You know the public are pissed off with Govt parties when Enda Kenny's own brother loses his seat in Castlebar.

    That'll not please Inda. :D

Mary Lou McDonald held one of the worst attendance records in history as an MEP. It won't take much for Boylan to improve on that.
A lot of their candidates are well educated people who might bring a bit of innovation and initiative.

Hahaha. Brilliant. There is nothing "educated" about SF, or indeed their supporters.
Take the Northern aspect out of the equation and there isn't a whole difference between SF and the rest.

Well, they have absolutely zero feasible policies and have shown themselves to be only capable of spouting populist nonsense that appeals to the lowest common denominator...so a bit of a difference there. Well, unless you're comparing them to the crusties at People Before Profit or the Socialist Workers Party. Not much of a difference there.
It will be very interesting to see how SF MEPs perform.

Here's hoping they're less of an embarrassment than Mary Lou was. Well, hell, with Ming there to roar nonsense at any given opportunity, Ireland will be embarrassed enough so if SF can keep their mouths shut over there they'll probably be a net positive.

Better news from the North. Edwin Poots' son was elected. Good news for your coalition partners.
