Way to go Sinn Fein

I'd say it's going almost exactly according to plan for Sinn Fein. They're not looking to run away with the vote in every constituency but they're winning most of the seats they wanted and, perhaps crucially, getting seats in the Dublin council. It bodes well for the future. They're still establishing themselves properly. I'm not even sure they have their eye on 2016. They won't want to get into government as a minority in coalition and then take a battering like Labour have. I reckon they're looking to 2021, when they can come into it with a strong hand and a solid voting base across the country where they can soundly compete with Fine Gael. They're playing the long game.

    ...the only game in town.

Jesus, I wrote that jokingly. When I checked the news this morning they were saying he was out of the running.

Well the only 'evidence' I have is that it's pretty much a well known fact they campaigned for an abolishment of the property tax, and vowed to scrap it if they got the chance.

In local government, they won't have the power to scrap it, but they will be able to reduce it by a 15% cut.

We'll have to wait and see I suppose.

I'm not even singling SF out but what you are going to see with any candidate that campaigned on that platform is a mildly embarrassing back down when they realise that there is som legal snare hidden in there somewhere that stops them from even doing that much.

Let there be no doubt about one thing. If SF were in government they'd not be rolling over and having their tummies tickled by the Europeans when it comes to negotiating on things like debt relief.

Next general election will be very interesting. Labour will undoubtedly have to try and rebuild and clear the rubble in which case the damage is well and truly done. So that leaves a situation where we have three new possibilites

    1. Possible FG/FF alliance with Sinn Fein/AAA/Socialists/PBP/indos??
    2. Rainbow coalition of SF, Socialists, indos, etc?
    3. unthinkable FF/FG coalition?

That's assuming Labour will suffer and my own personal opinion is that i think the writing could be on the wall for them after today.

    We live in interesting times.

SF have been dealing with major international politicians for decades?

Unlike most other Irish politicians, whose dealings would most likely involve cattle or what's for homework.

I disagree. People under 25 have grown up with little to no experience of the troubles. People under 18 have grown with no experience of the troubles whatsoever. Most young people now have no hang ups about Sinn Fein as they will have only ever known them as another political party. Sinn Feins support will only grow over the next ten years imo, particularly in the under 25 age group.

You dam skip.. Im 24 an gave my vote to sf because i believe the other party's are a shower of bastards only out for them selves

Yea yea murders this murders that, ff and them boys were worse if you go back long enough..

So why not give sf a go and see what they can do.. Labour have been no better than ff and full of empty promises.. Get sf into opposition to hassle the *****

Why should they forget about 2021? It would be better for everyone if they held off and established themselves further rather than rushing into government like Labour did. We all know what happens to parties that do that. I'm sure Sinn Fein don't want their party decimated. It would be much more practical and wiser for them and everyone if they hold off until they're really ready to be in government.

Would have thought they would do better considering they are populist and know how to lie and deceive people. But seems it hasn't worked.

If by their votes the people show they want Sinn Fein in government it would be very arrogant of the SF leadership to deny this. Perish the thought that they would behave like other parties. Is it all about Sinn Fein or does the will of the people matter? Are you showing your true colours already?

Fair play to SF, they did very well today.
For the first time they are now going to hold real power in councils around the country where they will have the power to reject the annual budget. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, so it'll be interesting to see how they perform now that they've joined the establishment.

I guess SF controlled councils and council where SF hold the balance of power will be reducing the property tax by 15% next year. I wonder what services they'll choose to cut to pay for it.

You lack subtility to be a shiner.

It's like if Gerry Adams a few years ago had said, I can make one phone call and get a hit squad to make you disappear and burnt your house and business to the ground.

But he was subtle he just said, with no reference whatsoever ...

"they haven't gone away you know!"

By 2021, the Irish economy and everything could be better. Sinn Fein need to make head way now when people are annoyed and pissed off and slightly vulnerable to the lies of Sinn Fein.
