The Speaker of the US House of Representatives John Boehner and a delegation of US Congress members stopped over in Shannon on Saturday.

They managed a trip to the Cliffs of Moher during US Independence Day. (Clare Herald) :)

I was one of those 77.

Last time I spoke to one of the guys there he mentioned 20 something in Shannon. The disaster that was the duty free at Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow finished the Shannon operation as ARI has now effectively pulled out of Russia as a result

All new positions or positions being back filled by people leaving are being recruited for Dublin. The redundancy package is still available and all the decisions are based made in Dublin.

    Thanks for the feedback.

So it’s only a matter of time before the rest of the ARI staff are let go or are moved to Dublin.

Why was the Duty Free in Sheremetyevo a disaster, especially when ARI collected €15 million from them in 2013?

The CSO statistics for April are out.
    • 2015 Total North American Passengers to date (Jan—Apr) 61,984
    • 2014 Total North American Passengers to date (Jan—Apr) 60,004
To date we have a slight overall increase of 1,984 or +3,3%

As expected, the switching of the Boston aircraft from Shannon to Dublin for the first 8 days of April (Easter) contributed in a -30% drop on that route.

Haha. Hadn't realised Jack had put such a spin on it.

ARI ploughed 15 million into developing the duty free offering in the then new terminal 3 Only to then not be able to get a liquor licence from the Russian government at the behest of the local losing tender. The whole business was completely focused on T3 to the detriment of all the other Russian businesses. In other words all the eggs went into one basket.

I wouldn't blame anyone in ARI to be honest. I've worked with other Russian companies subsequently and have to say I've never come across a more corrupt society. Everyone from the street cop's to government ministers. It's become impossible to do legitimate business there.

I'm happy that they got something back out of it. Although that 15 million obviously included the businesses at Domodevado airport which was probably worth that alone.

TBH they are definitely better out of Russia

Edit: they are definitely moving to a Dublin based operation but I don't think there will be compulsory redundancies

I would imagine ARI’s payroll at Shannon would have been €3 to €4 million per year?

Of course the transfer of these jobs to the Dublin would be in the best national interest.

There was issues with aircraft pressurisation, not anyone putting pressure to divert somewhere ;-)

Ahh. Could that not been fixed in Shannon?

Not sure if it re departed LHR but they would of had the option with lots of UA departures to get passengers to US without an overnight in SNN.

Might also be easier to locate an alternative aircraft in LHR

Airport on standby for jet emergency (Clare Herald)

Emergency services were placed on standby at Shannon Airport on Saturday for a passenger that jet declared an emergency over the Atlantic.

United Airlines flight UA-43 was en route from Rome to Washington and was about 500 kilometres off the Mayo coast when the crew declared an emergency and turned around.

The pilot had been in contact with the Irish air traffic controllers at the time and advised them of their situation and their intention to divert to Shannon.

An emergency plan was put into action at Shannon with local authority fire service crews and ambulances from several stations being alerted.

The Boeing 767-400 jet was cleared to descend from 34,000 feet to 22,000 feet after the crew confirmed they had a pressurisation issue in the passenger cabin.

The crew had also been in contact with with the airline’s operations centre and by the time they had reached a level of 22,000 feet, its understood they had resolved the issue.

Its now believed the crew was instructed by their operations centre to divert to London Heathrow instead of Shannon.

While emergency services were being scrambled at Shannon the pilot informed controllers that they wished to continue onto London’s Heathrow airport instead.

The emergency was stood down and the flight continued to London for a safe landing an hour later.

Fire crews from Shannon Town and Ennis along with emergency ambulances had been mobilised to the airport before they returned to their bases.

Is that just traffic movements or passengers? Movements would be down with EI regional pulling routes...no?
