Yeah, it wasn't Jim Gavin's finest hour. He was clearly very uncomfortable & it's an unwelcome distraction from what should be his main focus - this weekends game. No one in the Dublin set up can so much as sneeze without the media wanting to know all about it. So it might not be a bad idea for Jim Gavin to handle the media duties related to the games themselves, who we are playing, who is fit again, who is injured etc etc. And leave dealing with all the extraneous stuff to someone else in the county board.

Makes you wonder what really happened and why it's being kept so hush hush...

If there's a big investigation and all available video is viewed they will view the supposed 'free for all' after the incident. Dublin players gave as good as they got, it is reported.. Mayo/Kerry/Donegal would be the big winners if there were lengthy suspensions handed out.

If Dublin players deserve bans they should get them regardless of who they are. The incident should have been dealt with through the appropriate channels and put to bed with. Now it's continuing on and hanging over everybody's head. It's a distraction from Dublin's build up and is going to be a talking point before and after the game on Sunday.

Is anyone else having issues with boards? The last page of posts keeps disappearing and then reappearing. Is it happening to anyone else, or is it my crappy browser?

Well DoctaDee needs to take a break from laying landmines and booby traps around the Kinnegad ramp of the M4 & sort this out, coz its bloody annoying !

Many a good night I had in Canton Caseys .. our midland brethren are more than welcome !.. the bigger the crowd the more money we can giveaway to the other paupers of Leinster.

The whole Armagh thing is a complete fudge... it wasn't in the refs report so end of story really .. then again I'm surprised there was a referee ;)

I see what you did there. Nice side stepping of the issue. Well played. Jim Gavin could learn a trick or two from you. :D

You can clearly see poor aul Jonny thinking "Well b0ll0cks to that anyway, I suppose I have fewer All Irelands than the others do, so I am stuck wearing the Tomas O Se Debs dickie bow. :( "

In my mind that's exactly what happened. I felt Jim offeredup Davey as a sacrificial lamb last night. He seemed very uncomfortable answering those questions with the same answer.

If the Dublin players gave as good as they got, then how come the only player that seems to have emerged injured from the melee is Davy Byrne? If it turned into a full on, 30 man brawl, how come there are no Armagh players nursing serious injuries too? Wouldn't logic dictate that some of them should be a little bit worse for wear too, or are the Dubs all just terrible boxers?

My point is that the Dublin country board are going to be reluctant to push things. I also don't believe that bans should be handed out to players who intervene in a vicious assault that had it happened on the street would see serious jail time for the perpetrator .

So what you are saying is its ok for somebody to assault somebody else so long as it is during a Gaelic football?

No, it is ok to intervene if one of your teammates is being viciously assaulted.

It is actually a red card offence.
Immediate Ordering Off Infractions (Red Cards)
    5. Contributing to a melee.

One of the rules that is never implemented. If everyone contributing to a melee was sent off you'd have some 5 a side games.

I take your point, but that's not the view that the refs would take & in the grand scheme of things, their viewpoint is the one that matters. There has been many a fight started with the specific intention of drawing in the victims team mates & get one of them sent off for striking an opponent.

Whatever about what happened in this trainwreak of a challenge game, you are going down a very slippery slope if you think its always ok to get involved in other peoples battles. Dragging someone off a team mate, or trying to protect him is one thing, dishing out a few belts of your own is something else entirely.

James McCarthy for Small the only change for Sunday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,569 ✭✭✭✭ProudDUB

    Yep.

    1. Cluxton
    2. Cooper
    3. RO'C
    4. Philly
    5. James Mc
    6. Cian
    7. Jack Mc
    8. Fenton
    9. MDMA
    10. Flynn
    11. Kilkenny
    12. Dermo
    13. Rock
    14. Kev Mc
    15. Berno

Small has had a great year, but we'll be needing McCarthys experience & overall cuteness from here on out. Didn't Small pick up a bad knock to the shoulder in the Kildare game too?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,593 ✭✭✭DoctaDee

Yeah he did @ Small - I think it happened as he was lining up one of the Kildare lads down the end line. Small had a very good year in fairness, when you consider he wasn't a nailed on starter for Ballymun under Paul Curran.

I personally feel it's a huge benefit having COS at halfback in Gers absence, but I think the move is contingent on Fenton remaining effective in midfield as we draw closer to the bigger teams with experienced robust midfield men - not to jump the gun but a quarter final match up with O'Connor & O'Driscoll or Moran & Sheehan wouldn't instill great confidence in me that Fenton in his current stage of development would be ready for it. I would see us either reverting to COS or my preferred option would be to wheel Bastic out for 50 mins and then let the young guns take over - speaking of which Shane Carthy seems to have fallen away after a very encouraging start to the year ( I hope he's doin ok)

Word from inside the camp is Gavin is very impressed with Fenton and long may it continue. I've never been a fan of Bastic or Fennell for us in midfield. McCauley when he's playing well is a definite but I would much rather have seen McCarthy start ahead of the likes of Fennell or Bastic. With Brian being a fellow Raheny man long may he continue in the #8 following on in Whelans footsteps.

Oh absolutely with Fenton - the position is there for him if he's up to it, nothing would make me happier than to see lads playing in their proper positions, rather than robbing Peter to pay Paul. I'd disagree on Bastic, I actually marvel how effective he is at times in midfield .. he's a proper water carrier, does those thankless tasks - at 33 he's not gonna be striding 60 yards with a ball .. but it's his clever breakdown play and reading of the game that's so impressive. I'd take what he can give for 50 mins any day of the week, then get his tartan blanket and cup of cocoa for him in the stands.:D

Bastick has done a great job for us down the years. Was a rock in midfield in 2011 and made a big difference when he came on in the 2013 final, setting up Brogan for a goal just moments after he came on.

Agreed though it's nice to see Raheny being represented at intercounty level again. :)

Did anyone else hear that Bernard has injured his hand? (sidenote, did he play in Armagh?)

The hand was actually injured before the Lillies game - didn't stop him then !

A new lad covering himself in glory in the league, when the other top teams are resting/rehabbing their big guns, is one thing. So is doing it in Leinster games against inferior opposition, when you have the comfort of a 10 pt cushion to cover your ass if you make a mistake, or you kick a stupid wide, or you try something fancy to impress the boss.

The last 10 minutes of a slug fest against Mayo/Donegal/Kerry is where the likes of Kieran Donaghy, Aidan O'Shea, Michael Murphy etc etc are using all their know how and cuteness, to pull out all the stops....that is another thing entirely. That is where we need experienced leaders of our own, to make the correct decisions in the white hot heat of battle.

Maybe I'm just paranoid from 2013, but back then, the new kids on the block (Kilkenny, Mannion, Jack Mc, Kevin O'Brien) were less effective as the year wore on. Last year, Costello was virtually invisible against Donegal. So I wouldn't be discounting the importance of the likes of Bastick or Alan Brogan just yet, if not to start, then at least off the bench.

Bernard fine btw. It's one of the few pieces of good news to come out of that Jim Gavin interview.

May sound crazy but i felt Bastick really answered the critics this year. I felt he had a great 'pre season' and league campaign, where he belongs now i don't know. Championship a different animal but he is a good addition on the bench i feel too, for that 15 minutes if you are looking to win scrappy ball in the middle of the park
