    1. Planescape: Torment - Sublime writing, beautiful art direction, genuinely moving. One of the best RPGs ever made.

    2. Thief series- The stealth gameplay still hasn't been bettered. Also, 'taffer' is the greatest word ever.

    3. Morrowind - A vast, immersive world, a story to match, and none of the soullessness of the games that came after.

    4. Planetside/Planetside 2 - The sheer scale of the games is just amazing. The fact that they're also very good FPS is almost just a bonus.

    5. UFO: Enemy Unknown - Turn based strategy actually became scary.

    6. Deus Ex - The level of detail and reactivity was unparalleled.

    7. Civilization - Just... Everything about it.

    8. Katamari Damacy - Trippy, surreal, catchy music, and very different.

    9. S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow Of Chernobyl - Uncompromisingly bleak, but so immersive, atmospheric, difficult... Pisses over CoD's irradiated ashes tbh.

    10. Minecraft - You know why.

    1. Diablo 2 LOD - This has eaten up so much of my life. Still huge fun nearly 15 years later.

    2. Homeworld - I think this was the most brilliant and ground-breaking RTS ever made. I'm incredibly excited that it's being remade.

    3. Starcraft - A legend in RTS. Probably the game I've played the most of ever.

    4. Civilization 2 - Although I've probably played more Civ 5 now this was the classic and the background to most of my childhood.

    5. Grand Theft Auto 3 - Blew me away. Quantum leap in gaming at the time.

    6. Half Life - This and Quake were the fps experience from most of my childhood. Half Life edges it for me between the two.
    7. Quake

    8. Mass Effect 2 - My favourite installment from my favourite series of games.

    9. Final Fantasy X - The only FF game I've played but it had me hooked for the better part of 2 years.

    10. Starcraft 2 - A wonderful refinement on the classic.

I just missed out on putting in Far Cry 3 but decided I couldn't keep SC2 off the list.

    2: Dark Souls
    3: The last of us

    7: Journey
    8: Uncharted 2
    9: Super Mario 64
    10: Silent Hill 2

I didn't worry about the order too much apart from numbers 1,2 and 3.

01 Deus Ex - the cliched number one game of all time for a reason
    02 Half-Life 2 - probably a tie for number one. Gaming perfection
03 Gothic 3* - while disastrous on first release now patched with the latest community patch the single most engaging open world rpg I have ever played. Oblivion and Skyrim? Don't make me laugh.
04 System Shock 2 - scary, engaging and immersive and finally recognised when it was re-released in HD format re-branded as "Bioshock" :pac:.
05 STALKER Shadow Over Chernobyl - probably one of the greatest gaming worlds ever created
06 Fallout 3 - while I often knock Bethesda games for being shallow (and they are) you simply can't argue with the hours you can get sucked(ered?) into spending in these game worlds. New Vegas has more interesting ideas but the Fallout 3 world was one that got me first
07 Dark Forces 2 - my favorite of the SW shooters and a great shooter in it's own right
08 Unreal Tournament - the online game that made me obsessive enough to join a clan and play in tournaments etc. Made me split away from the Quake lads.
09 Baldurs Gate - I wanted to add KOTOR to my top 10 but after much wrangling I had to stick with BG be it 1 or 2 they remain 2 of the best games ever made that stand up to this day with ease.
10 Far Cry - I really should have Doom on my list as the game that changed my life almost literally but I finally had to add Far Cry simply because of the pure unadulterated fun I had playing it.

As said by others it's hard to do a list like this and tomorrow I will probably change my mind but what the heck. Many left out - Doom 1 & 2, Anachronox, KOTOR, Gothic 2, Championship Manager 98, GTA San Andreas. Not to mention my speccy days - Knight Lore, Sabreworlf, Jet Set Willy, Starquake, Way of the Exploding Fist, Ranarama etc. etc. I could go on all night.

    * Gothic 3 is a good example of the difficulty picking 10 games. I would probably put Gothic 2 almost as high as 3 but when you only have 10 games to pick I'm only picking one from a series.

    1: GTA3
    2: Metal Gear Solid
    3: Elder Scrolls V - Skyrim
    5: Rome: Total War
    6: Left 4 Dead 2
    7: Colin McRae Rally
    8: ISS Pro (PS1)
    9: Doom (PS1 port)
    10: Far Cry

    I imagine Ive played games that are more deserving to be ahead of the above, but these are the ones that popped into my head. The reasons being )if anyone cares! ;

GTA3 because it was the first 3d openworld I experienced and was extraordinary at the time.
MGS 1 because of the cinematic approach it took and all the 4th wall breaking stuff. This was probably the first "serious" game I played.
Skyrim because it gave me exactly what I wanted from a fantasy RPG and ironed out Oblivion's annoyances in many ways.
Rome TW - Back in 2004, I was still newish to PC gaming (very new to strategy) and to control huge armies on the ancient battle field was jaw dropping. I played the demo to death and put huge hours into that game when it realised. No other TW game ever came close to its appeal for me.
L4D2 is the only online shooter Ive put any serious time into. I still play it regularly so it deserves a place for getting me into a genre I otherwise avoid
Colin McRae - Could have been the original Gran Turismo either but CMR won out because I remember me and a friend buying 2 copies on a trip into the city and playing it for a whole summer practically. Either beating stage times or splitscreening. Easy to pick up, very hard to master.
ISS Pro - Had played FIFA games on megadrive but my first taste of 32 bit soccer was this. The animations, the through ball system, many many great battles with friends. I went onto buy every Konami soccer game from then up til Fifa took back the crown afew years ago.
Doom - Long before I got my own PS1, I played this at a friend's place. I was still on a megadrive back in 1995 so Doom was something else. I remember thinking it was the scariest thing ever! Im glad my first experience of Doom was the console version. The soundtrack made it into a horror game as opposed to a fast paced fragfest.
Far Cry - Similar to GTA3, this was something new and amazing back in the day. To me anyway! A huge tropical island to explore, as opposed to corridors or an urban environment. In the days before broadband, me and a friend linked our PC's via ethernet and did some 1 on 1 in Far Cry. It was epic. We were late developers! :D
