Once the brake compound lining on the rear shoes gets down to a certain level, a wire connected to it will make a connection and bring up the light on the dash.

I dunno, thats an awful lot of work to do on a car. I was just thinking that at the moment you are paying for a car and all the stuff you want to do. If you bought a brand new one then you would just have to pay for the car.

    Brand new 420d = €60,000 so I'm guessing a new 435i would be around the €85,000 mark. :p

I think I get this, and to use a stupid example, is this like having tyres getting to a certain thread level, and issuing a warning?

I'm not used to cars that do this sort of stuff, and really appreciate you guys being patient and helpful.

So basically it's like compared to tyre thread, it's down to e.g. 4.0 and the alarm system sets in and says, you need new shoes?

    My plans match yours somewhat

NCT and sale of the C5 now I've finally discovered the battery problem on the gtv

    NCT on the alfa

    Save up to upgrade :)

    Not an upgrade for me.
I should have said another car aswell as scratchy

I was going to get a remap but after a, shall we say 'rather spirited drive' against with a guy in an A5 a couple of weeks ago between Borrisoleigh and borrisokane I'm not sure I'm to be trusted with anything faster:o

    €500 not bad for that.

It ain't, but most underestimate the amount of work that needs to go into it which is why 500 lids sound expensive.

Also, I plan on holding on to this car for a very long time so I want it to be performing 110% hence why I'm spending the money on it now.

Try to get it at least to 100% for now! :pac:

When you like cars it's not always about resale value or making sure you don't spend more than its worth. I like adding bits and pieces here and there, some cheap and some more expensive knowing I will never see the majority of that money back when I sell. But I enjoy upgrading over time and it makes me keep a car longer than I would if I left it the same as when I bought it. That's all part of being a car enthusiast.

What a long drive, 950kms from 1pm to 10pm, driving rain at the beginning, dark from 400kms in and, worst of all, a cracked windscreen for the last 600kms. A beer, a burger then bed before a 28hour ferry across the bay of Biscay in this weather. I think I'm cracked as well as broke from 150litres of petrol.

Are you doing the trip in a Defender???

Ignore me if not - just someone I follow on twitter is on a trip to Italy with his Defender

2.0 petrol. Dark blue with red leather.

A friend of a friend owns it, he can't insure it. Bought it just cos he liked them, its not been used properly for a while, just around the estate every now and again. Its got a "minor problem" I'm told, but I don't know what it is, I'll know tomorrow and I'll have pics.

    Just thought I'd ask.

Why does it always have to be the twin spark!
A minor problem with an alfa is always a major problem!:p

What's involved in a full valet?
    Claying, tar removal etc?

Just to add, I see valeting something anyone can do very easily for very little outlay.

Don't exactly know, just seen a sign outside the local filling station:

    Car Wash €7
    MPV €8
    Jeep €10
    Mini Valet €20
    Full Valet €90

I always thought they cost around €50, for everything clay, wax etc. :p
The place is about the size of a garden shed and I can't see much cleaning products inside. They don't even have one of those fixed power washers, just a tiny portable Karcher one.
