We took a trip up to Dunleer today to visit a well known toy store there.

We decided to stop by Port Oriel (aka Clogherhead)

Some lads spinning on the end of the pier and using feathers.

    Nothing happening at all.

3 lads on the rocks also casting feathers and nothing happening.

Showed a polish lad how to cast propperly (his 1st time ever at sea fishing)

I cast out as far as I could for him, showed him how to jig and reel, and low and behold,I caught a small pollack for him.

He was well delighted with the catch and very happy that I showed him to cast and jig propperly.

By the time I got to the camera the chap had thrown it back in.

2 seals swimming in and out of the harbour while we were there.

I think they may have had the Blessing of the Fleet yesterday,as all the trawlers were in,and all had bunting up on them.

It was very busy there today, festival like atmosphere......even an ice cream van on the pier doing great business.:)

Cheers Faigs are they dirty fish like mullet or are they edible.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,204 ✭✭✭dodderangler

Looks more like a young coalfish to me
It's eyes look different than a pollock

  • Registered Users Posts: 800 ✭✭✭faigs

Pollock is definitely edible but if it's a coalfish I'm not sure. Not a great authority on it to be honest! Other lads here would have a better idea.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,204 ✭✭✭dodderangler

    They are perfectly edible

  • Registered Users Posts: 644 ✭✭✭cichlid child

West Pier is too crowded, people who dont have a clue how to cast and they cross your line, tourists in your face every second.

Kids runninhg everywhere and nearly getting hooked in the feathers.

Then add in all the pleasure craft and jet skis whizzing in and out close to the harbour and its an even worse place to try and fish from.

    Don't forget the seals.

    A few caught there yesterday.

    Seals I'd say.
I've hooked my fair share of them fat ba5tards on both piers out there. Bullock harbour is te worst for seals

What happens when you hook a seal , how do you know its happened ? what do you do then ?

You'll get very excited in thinking that its a tope that's taken your mackerel as you feel your line scream off until you see that big fat head rise up eating your mackerel. Generally you won't physically hook the seal but he will take the mackerel and swim with it. Only thing to do is fight it back to save your line.

That's because he hasn't an index fingers to say fcuk you. Not taking my fish

ive also seen 5 0z weights being shot out of the water like a bullet when a seal grabs you mackerel..moves a bit and lets go..be careful out there:-p

Still a bit of a chill in the water if this has already been said does it affect the mackerel arrival?

Local lads around Bray weren't get many at all recently but maybe that's changed now.

P.S. Went on my first trip about a month ago trying to catch razor blade fish and even with shells in the area had no joy. Tide was out and used salty water to lure them out past Booterstown while the tide was out. Any advise on best time, area, method? Thanks!

Can I urge and advise everyone going angling (be it shore or boat fishing) to please check the weather forecasts in that area that you are going fishing.

Try to be prepared and make sure you let people know where you are going and what time you expect to be back home at.

    Thanks.:)
