no government should be deciding & interfering and censoring in what an entire nation should or should not be able to look at on the internet...it is also setting a precedent for further erosion of personal rights & freedom of information

What legitimate use does the Pirate bay have? Any estimates of what percentage of overall use this is (I'd put it at under 1%).

How many legitimate uses does a knife have compared to illegitimate uses?

You don't ban something just because some people can misuse it. TPB is a search engine, nothing more. It's not good or bad, right or wrong in itself.

Ah FFS come on, we ALL know what TPB is used for by the overwhelming majority. What your saying is that if there is a slim , totally outbalanced possibility for something to be legal DISPITE the massive percentage of the other uses being illegal .... dont ban something?

That's just plain silly IMO. If something is so overwhelmingly being used for illegal activities then you simply cannot counterbalance it with the tiny percentage of legal uses simply becuase they exist (in the tiny minority)

Lets call this thread what it is OK...... "We like pirating, thats being fought now. That sucks."

Why is it illegal? Is copying a friend's CD illegal?

Buying CDs is dying, banning torrent websites isn't going to revive it.

Guns have legitimate uses but some types are banned and others are strictly regulated.

Knives have many more legitimate uses than the pirate bay does.

If its a legitimate torrent download e.g. iso for a linux distro, you can go to the content owner's website to get the link. No need for pirate bay.

Copying a friends CD is illegal. He can copy it for himself. That's it.

I use google to search for all my torrents, I don't search any specific torrent websites. Because I and a lot of other people use google in this way should it be blocked?

On the same vein google can be used to facilitate the acquisition of illegal arms and child pornography. So surely that's a much greater offense, so why not shut down google?

Sure you can download youtube music vidoes and just remove the video leaving the sound file intact as it is now, no problem. That's how get most of my music now.

    Better shut down youtube so.

    Resulting in horrible quality.

Nope, not at all. If you know what you are doing and have the right software you get as good or better than CD quality 128-192kbps. I don't settle for anything less.

Which is fairly bad seeing as you can get 320kbps on most torrents.

Whatever the quality of the track uploaded to youtube you can download it at the same quality. There is no loss or poor quality unless you download a low quality upload in the first place. I have 25mb files for 3mins songs so the quality is there.

Remember how you used to hit record and record your favourite song from the radio ? Well nower days I just record onto my computer direct from Spotify or other websites no torrents no downloads.

You think 128-192kbps is 'as good or better than CD quality'???

Using files well below 320kbps is 'settling for less'.

My girlfriend listens to music on Youtube sometimes and the sound quality is always horrendous.

The difference is that youtube respond to claims from copyright owners and take down videos if necessary. Pirate Bay ignore copyright owners.

People can download content the copyright owners themselves upload on youtube.

Yes but in that case the copyright holders have control over what they upload and what people can download. Copyright holders usually wouldn't upload full films for example.

They might upload music videos to promote albums but they don't upload full albums.

With 3rd party programs unapproved by youtube, yes. Google have been trying to put a stop to some of these applications.

    +1 and FLAC.

Often been back in a friends house where he sometimes uses youtube as the DJ, using others playlists etc.. The volume is atrocious on many of them, let alone the quality.

With Pat Rabbittes recent comments on the pornography topic, the pathway to mass censorship argument has lost a lot of weight, at least in this country.

I don't know what Camerons future intentions are for Britain.

That's the UK. We're not in quite as bad a situation as they are. On another note EZTV is a fantastic service. Sort of serving a niche as far as the grand scheme of things are concerned but they do it well.

If you can hear it, you can copy it.

The only difference is that we're progressed from recording radio on tape to hard drives.

I'm getting a lot of mixed statements on this. The Irish Independent seems to be going down the line that Mr. Rabbitte has no intention of implementing such a block, while The Irish Times says he's "considering" the idea.

lol @ 128-192 kbps being 'CD quality'.

Even 320 can be exposed on a big system.

I think most people are well aware of these or at least have the knowledge to google a solution. However, it's not a good idea for you to post them here. Not only are you putting Boards.ie in potential trouble but you are also risking your boards account being blocked. Probably best to edit your post.

As gavmcg92 points out, don't be posting links to sites that can get this one in trouble.
