Am I wrong do the Equitation cadets not complete the full Cadet program prior to commissioning?
I have seen equitation officers on orderly officer duty.
They have a very different career path compared to an infantry officer for sure.. but then so do Pilot Officers!!

    Please explain your view?

    Whooopdy do, Orderly Officer.

Surely I'm no expected to point out the differences between becoming an infantry Lt and becoming an equestrian officer? Particularly when it was GF who made the point that they are not military, and you told him to check the facts.

Perhaps you could point out how the Equestrian School IS military. Not to say the burden of proof is with you, I'm just interested in how you might qualify your answer!

Also worthwhile reading the profiles of the Equitation School officers as posted on the Military.ie web site. They were all equitation Cadets, commissioned into the equitation school and served a full military career, including service overseas in addition to their Riding Career!!

Ah yes, the brochures. Standard practice for every army - make out that no matter what your role, you'll be 'at the front line of it all'. We even have horsey-ceremonial units billy-big-time it about how they had personnel in Afghan (I'm sorry Kings Troop RHA, but having an officer on a jolly in the middle of Bastion is not a deployed unit, you fat lazy donkey wallopers)

Don't bother read the brochure man. Talk to the guys who share the barracks with them, talk to the enlisted guys who work in the stables, talk to the officers of the inf battalions. You'll get the real gen-dit off them. Or otherwise continue defending the school for long faces based on what you read on a glossy brochure and recruiting website. Doesn't bother me, as a matter of fact rose tinted glasses aren't issued so you'll be a step ahead if you do get in. If you consider it military service worthy of your countries expense, crack on.

Already had my career, did my Twelve in the Air Corps..

Equitation Cadets do not complete the full Cadetship course. It may say so in the "brochure" but you'll find in reality that when the line cadets are doing route marches, tactical training or ceremonial, the horsey crowd are down at the opposite end of the DFTC, engaged in vital equine duties.....
They do not deploy overseas(unless you include showjumping competitions outside the state as an overseas deployment). The absence of overseas tour ribbons on their uniform is a giveaway.
The exceptions to this are the commanding officers in the unit, who normally have a showjumping/foxhunting background, and transfer from other Transport Corps units for the duration of their tenure. However they are not riding officers.
As for orderly officer duties, any officer incompetent can do that job once you have a decent BOS to show him where to sign, walk and look. I have suffered 24 hour periods with a few beauties, but that's a book for another day.

I think if you read the Bio's you will see that the senior officers have all completed overseas tours as part of there career progression, the junior officers are the current competition riders and really it wouldn't make sense to have them overseas for 6 months during the peak of there competitive career. They complete a cadetship, do you agree? its not the same as a line officer nor is the cadetship of an Air Corps/naval service cadet.
And they carry out armed duties whilst in barracks.
In fact I think all equitation officers are commissioned into the transport corps and from there are posted to the equitation school.

    1. Equitation cadets do the exact same trsining as all ther army cadets. They do not head off to do equitatiin related stuff at the sxpense of their military training.

    2. In order to be OC Eq Sch you have to have served in the unit as a jockey, doesnt matter for how long, you must have been a riding officer at some time. They qualify for the rank of Lt Col in the exact same way as all others with no exemption

    The question is:

If you want to soldier, why would you join the showjumping club as a career?

Probably the best job a horsey type can get.

Have a look around, plenty of other sportsmen get in too.

True, but you don't get county footballers joining the army just to play football for the army

Are we to hear this week??

  • Registered Users Posts: 11 CCCP1

Im not sure if it is this week or next that we hear. Will it be via email or a phonecall?

I guess nobody has any idea how many people got throught the medicals then? How did the guys who had to see the specialist about their ECG scans get on?

    True
But think how many would apply if the Army could put a team in the All-Ireland.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,566 ✭✭✭ZeitgeistGlee

I had to go to the specialist for the ECG, and got the all clear.. the cadiologist said the medical officer didn't know how to read the ecg, because mine was exactly what it should have been for my age etc.. thought that myself considering id done 3 of them in the last year.

Heard there were about 15 lads sent for ECGs, that many up there with you YAD?
