Just heard on the radio its being treated as a crime scene.

They said they are treating it as a crime scene as a matter of procedure, they still don't know if it was an industrial accident or something more sinister so the norm is to treat it as a crime scene.

The American authorities are obviously keeping an open mind, unlike after hours keyboard warriors who can tell what has happened from 10,000 miles away.

Regardless of the cause, I hope the victims are treated better than the victims in Bhopal :(

The real story is probably going to become how can there be a large quantity of explosive material close to appartments, nursing homes and schools.

The ariel photos show just how close it was.
Could be employees of the plant. Sometimes big factories aren't close to any towns and they have to build accommodation and amenities for the staff.

    dya think!

    Yup, absolutely convinced of it.

But maybe they were informed of the plot beforehand and came prepared and are unscathed..

Well I'd imagine they'd also have to investigate potential negligence, safety breaches, etc.

Ok im no expert in the matter but from tv shows, movies and books ive always assumed that fertilizer, or what helps make fertilizer, was highly explosive. I would have thought they would evacuate the surrounding area first then let the fire burn out as it would have been extremely dangerous. Then again hindsight is a great thing.

What gets me is that they are allowed to produce and store ammonia in a residential area.

Can we please stop with the sarcastic comments at least till we find out what caused this tragedy.

Many people including a lot of firemen and emergency responders have lost their lives and a town has been destroyed. With the recent boston bombing too lots of people will be affected by all this.

Surely a bit of respect for those is not too much to ask

My sarcasm was clearly directed at a previous comment and not with direct regard to the tragedy in question. Take your "holier than thou" elsewhere.

Well, that's Texas for you. A state that considers any sort of govt regulation or proper urban planning to be a form of evil communism. Sadly they're reaping what they sow.

It is indeed a scandal at how a fertiliser plant - one of the most dangerous enterprises there is - was in the heart of a residential area.

There's not exactly a shortage of space either

The plant has been there since the 60s so maybe houses/schools etc were built around the plant as has happened both here in Ireland and the UK with manufacturing plants,According to my Dangerous goods training
anhydrous ammonia is a TOXIC Corrosive substance.

And Ammonium Nitrate is the basis of all industrial explosives, i.e C.A.N fertiliser.. above 30% and you need a Garda escort to move it in bulk.

Closer look at the apartments near the end of this video. It's not on youtube yet so i can't embed. I'm sure it will be on youtube so hopefully somebody can embed it when it does.

It is a rural community that services farmers. The factory would be in the heart of the community as it served as the heart of the economy. As for ammonia, it is great for growth.

I woke up to go to the toilet at 5 the other morning and sky news were reporting this saying there is 60 or 70 people dead, now I'm reading 14.

Why are they constantly exaggerating casualties lately, between this and Boston.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 451 ✭✭bhamsteve

I'm sorry but anybody who cannot see a problem with manufacturing and storing ammonia 100 meters away from a school and a nursing home is a fool, and any government official who allows it should, at the least, be fired.

    Ammonium nitrate disasters

I seen today 14 or 15 dead and 60 still unaccounted for. This would be the top story on the news today only for Boston. This is a truly tragic story also.

It was a siege that took place in Waco at a property belonging to a cult, the Branch Davidians. It lasted well over a month and ended in a huge fire which killed most of the cult members. Who exactly started the fire has remained a huge issue for years, with some saying that the American government overreacted and pretty much caused the deaths of all those people.

I believe it was one of the main gripes of the Unabomber.

It's kind of a symbol of the worst side of the american government to those who would identify as anti-government.

Pretty sure that was Timothy McVeigh who was upset about Waco, then he planted the Oklahoma City bomb at the FBI Building. Most of the Unabombers acts were a good few years before Waco happened, both complete nut jobs of course.

Bit ignorant of chemistry - just how toxic is the stuff?
And how much of it would be consumed by the fire versus how much would end up in a poisonous gas cloud emerging from the site?
