The idea that intervention would force buyers to buy and cause an early recovery is frightening in its ignorance.

Will it not just drag out the recovery as all this stock will have to be sold when markets turn.

Beef is looking good . All those friesan bull calves from 2013 that i should of given away are getting fleshy now. They should help balance the books.

    Food is political.

Looked up the website that facilitates it, a 500 cow herd with a rolling average of 10,000 litres a cow if it pays a levy of 2 cent a litre on all of its milk supply guarantees itself on 90% of its milk a margin of 18 cent a litre over feed costs pretty good scheme

Is land cheap on the east coast, a lot of it has 200 day + growing season, could possibly be very low cost, cheap grain, energy and labor..

    What volumes were going through?

Haven't looked that far yet, you'd have to be worried though with kiwis at start of their season and quantities going through gdt will only get bigger deflating further a fairly depressed market...

Name "one" that's not supporting price.

We're obsessing over price paid. Are we as obsessive about the price we earn? I'm talking solids
    no penalties
    bonus' to be had
    ridding herds of passengers
    maxing grass intake
    Building covers
    Selling surplus stock
Milking right amount of cows for land base
    Matching winter calvers to bonus
Drying off for winter as opposed to giving cheap milk to processors
    Etc

    Ah now...
People may or may not be doing all or some things right on solids
It's not as if A coop doesn't gain pro rata off those things being done too,it's not all for ourselves

But the lower the base price, the less we are paid right? That's a major issue
for example 2 cent on 50k litres is still a thousand euros in one month
The so called fund is paying yourself out of your own money, manangement dipping into our own purses (co op coffers ) and giving it back ,the other dairies are just taking less of a margin, which is a much much fairer thing to do

Im changing my thought process, Rather then increasing numbers, cull hard(may need the money) good points frazz

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,939 ✭✭✭kevthegaff

If we all increase solids will the base price stay the same...

No where in my post did I disagree with any if what you posted. The reality is price is in the tank and we have to deal with it. Simple Simon et al are talking of EU interference, all that'll do is delay any recovery.

Again name a coop that's not subbing price ATM

All that is good advice. And should be done when milk is at 39 cents just the same as now.

That doesent mean we cant expect to be paid as much as is possible instead of just taking what were given.

Many moons ago I was harvesting a bit of barley for a neighbour. 'It's a bit thin' I said , 'matter a feck' he retorts, 'price is what really matters'.

    I will never forget that.

at dg meeting today apparently only 10% of farmers are acheiving 450 kg/cow of milk solids per cow or 1260g ms /ha, i was also amazed at the very low figure who complete a profit monitor
