Okay thanks very much lads - I'll keep it sensible so. I may just revert back to the 10 miles with 8 at MP altogether. Doesn't seem to be worth the risk at this point. And I have been doing my strides Meno. (sometimes)

    Monday 24/04
    4 miles easy w/ strides
I had to pick up the pace temporarily to pass out a group of ladies from the club because I looked like a bloody lunatic. I was doing my strides and gaining on them / losing them as they did their session.I looked like a deranged bullock. :)
Hammer still feels a bit tender but not too bad. I'll keep a close eye on it. Stretched it well before and after anyway. Resting heart rate of 44 tonight. Lowest its ever been.

Taper madness has officially started this morning. :)
Both my legs are practically falling off and I almost decked a colleague this morning when he sneezed.

    Love it.
Watch you don't pull your hamstring going up/down stairs :pac:

Oh the hamstrings are long gone! Now it's my calf's and most other parts of my legs. I may as well cancel it now and sign up for Dublin. :pac:

This was your first mistake. If he comes near you again throw him out a window. Get the job done properly next time!

    Wednesday 26/03
    4 miles easy @ 9:12 mpm

Liverpool are on TV tonight so I decided to get this out of the way early. It was little bit quicker than it should have been but the legs felt good after they woke up. Neither of my knees fell off (and I didn't feel like they would) so that's always a bonus during taper.

Last session of the plan tomorrow night. 10 miles with 8 @ MP. I'm half missing the training already.

    Thursday 27/03
    Final Session!
    74mins / 8.7 miles @ 8:32 mpm

Taper is really kicking in now with the last session of the plan done and dusted.
    8:33,8:22,8:29,8:32,8:23,8:28,8:25,8:17

    .7 cool down.

The legs felt pretty good and the hamstring felt better so the final rubdown on Saturday should be the just the trick. 12 miles easy on Sunday as the final double digit run prior to the big day. Getting a few flickers of nerves today so I can only imagine what I'll be like next week. I wish it was this Sunday! :)

    Saturday March 29th
    10 miles @ 8:52 mpm pace

10 miles done already as the missus is going away on a hen weekend. I bumped into a group from the club and they asked me to join them so I ended up running the first 5 way too quickly. I realised this and took a different route to finish out the run at my own pace. Not the end of the world I suppose as I copped it early. Going for a rub at 11 and then freewheeling into next weekend with everything at easy pace...

Good man. Everything's looking good for you. I wish London was next weekend too!

Jesus, it's still only Tuesday.

    Monday 31/03
    3 miles @ 9:25 mpm

I'll need to tie my shoelaces together tonight because I keep wanting to take off. The wife is also going to kill me for moping around the house and giving out about not being able to run. Our DB admin came in yesterday with a heavy cold. I sit near him. I sit near him!! I'm asking for a transfer to the Dublin office.

    5 days.

    Tuesday 01/04
    4 miles w/1.5 @ MP (8:53 avg)

I'm still not completely happy with the hamstring. It may well be a touch of taper madness but I have had minor issues with it on and off over the last year so it's in the back of my mind. Being completely honest I know it's not too bad but as AMK put it, "it's there". I'm icing it tonight and I think I'll take tomorrow evening and possibly even Thursday off.
If this was in the middle of a training cycle it probably wouldn't cost me another thought and I'd run away on it, but with the race coming up it's under the microscope. I'm staying relaxed about it cos there's feck all I can do about it now! :)

It's your body repairing itself from months of training... the sensation is a good one as opposed to one to be concerned about. Don't be worrying about it!

Heat worked for me, rather than Ice. But I guess it depends on your activity levels and at what stage the injury is.
Tiger balm and compression gear is the business as well.

The other people doing spring marathons seem to be putting up their training totals so I said I'd follow suit. Training for Manchester started the day after the Waterford Half Marathon - so the 2nd of December. Since then I've had my most consistent training block ever:

    Miles: 680
    Longest Run: 22 (w/ 10 @ MP)
    Long runs: 22,21,20.5,20,19,19,18,18

There was a great variety of sessions with loads of MP miles scattered through the plan. I missed no sessions at all during the plan.

I had 1 terrible week and a couple of mediocre weeks around that, which were caused by some sort of nasty virus.

I probably should be feeling more confident than I am but due to a chronic case of taper madness I have no hope of hitting 3:45. :pac:

In short, is it Sunday yet? I can't wait to get training for shorter stuff after this weekend. I'm hoping the marathon training will give me a great kick start in this regard.

I may as well be the first one......good luck on Sunday Beef. Hope you have a super race. Your training has been great - have plenty of confidence and you will nail it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,630 ✭✭✭overpronator

+1 to what Career Move said, your training has been brilliant, fair play. Sub 3.45 will be no problem for you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,606 ✭✭✭RedRunner

+1 to above. As I said before Beef I'm expecting you to set me a nice little target to aim for in London;)

...and if the leprosy diagnosis is correct you should be a good bit lighter towards the end with bits having fallen off along the way:pac::D

In all seriousness though, hope you have a great race and enjoy the beers afterwards.

    Good luck on Sunday Beef.
I'm sure you'll do great once the imaginary taper injuries clear up :pac:

Give her welly on Sunday ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,202 ✭✭✭Gavlor

That's a serious block of training!

By the looks of things endurance won't be an issue, all going well you'll have enough left in the tank to turn on the afterburners over the last few miles

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,297 ✭✭✭SamforMayo

You will do it, of course you will! Good luck and remember eyes on the prize, it's there for you to take. Now go do it and give me some hope that I can follow suit some day!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,182 ✭✭✭Beef

Good Jaysis! Thanks everyone for the well wishes and votes of confidence.
I was in bed early last night so only catching up now. Up bright and early (05:45 ) to do a short easy run. 2.5 miles @ 9:30 pace and I couldn't have gone any faster at that hour of the morning, even if I wanted to. I felt very good though - as contradictory as that sounds.

I'm hoping the early start will help me get a good nights sleep tonight, because I'm driving to Dublin early in the morning for the flight. Then its expo time to collect the race numbers and back to the hotel for a relaxing evening and no sleep. If I manage 2 or 3 hours it will be 1 or 2 more than I got before Cork. :pac:

Whatever happens on Sunday - I'd like to say a huge thanks to Meno and career_move for gently nudging me away from P and D and onto the "meno plan" and all the associated grief that brought them, with my silly questions.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and will follow it again without doubt.

Boards.ie A/R/T posters, a great bunch of lads!

Good man Beef, best of luck. No reason why you can't nail your target, the training has been spot on!!
