Yes, you're right Medal Play is a strokes competition

a Monthly Medal can be in what ever format your competition secretary chooses.

We are gonna have to agree to disagree on this.

One thing i do know is i want to play druids again though its been far to long at this stage since i played it last.

Played a few times since I last posted here.

14/8 - West Waterford, just outside Dungarvan, scored 32pts and overall I played pretty ok considering it's only a course I play once a year. In 2007 (off 20) I scored 33pts so I reckon my game is improving as this time I was off 14. I know it's all relative but interestingly If I had been off 20 now my score would have been 37pts. Nice course with lots of mature trees that are easy to find!

15/8 - Dungarvan, wet day mainly so made things a lot trickier. I only scored 29pts but had my first ever eagle which I was obviously thrilled about. It happened on the par 4 (index 10) 9th hole and after a good straight drive I knocked an 8 iron straight towards the flag from about 110 metres out. It dropped just short of the green and ran towards the hole but I didnt know it had gone in until I got to the green and couldnt see my ball so seeing as I knew it had gone towards the flag I checked the hole and there it was!!

Yesterday I was back in Moate and had 31pts. Not my best day but my drives were pretty good. Irons just about alright but my putting was not as good as other rounds recently and I did seem to find an awful lot of bunkers for the first time in ages. However I did par 8,9 and 10 for the 3rd round in succession there.

I don't know if you have made a mistake but back 9 adds up to 14 points.

34 points in Tullamore today. Happy that the bit of range work I did over the last week has improved my game, I was really not playing great the last 2 weeks. 35 putts and no birdies is what cost me today, nothing outside 5 feet would drop. Couple weeks off now so hoping to come back fresh at the start of next month.

medal last weekend. CSS 73, Net 73. Another top 10 in a medal, another round where I hit the buffer without playing well and leave a bundle of shots out there. Another opportunity missed for a meaningful cut.

It's strange though, I'm enjoying the medals. Stroke play, off the back sticks, and it's the one suggestion of consistency this year.

another medal. net 68, and a clause 19 adjustment for a loss of 1.5 in total :)

    featured as well.

    8/13 fir
    6/18 gir
32 putts (second round in row)
just the one penalty in that, which is the principal difference between this and a normal round.

91 strokes off back tees. HC 12 so not great shooting. Didn't have any really bad holes just lots of poor holes. Plenty of doubles, but on a windy day.

I Played The K-Club Palmer Ryder Cup Course today. Booking it on Golfnow.ie my partner and I payed €30 each.

The course itself was an excellent test and if you hit it well you got rewarded and if you hit it poor you got punished especially with the bit of wind we got today.

The notion that great players have played here in The Ryder Cup was a great incentive for me to give it my best effort and see what I could shoot. I ended up +5 for the front nine and felt like a clown after silly bogeys on 7,8 & 9.

After a nice sandwich in the halfway/clubhouse I felt rejuvenated on the 10th tee and looked forward to back nine where the course gave plenty of birdie chances if you could take them.

There was a lot of work being done around the course which was good to see because at a venue of this stature upkeep will be the key to longevity.

I was in dreamland on 16 thinking of Darren Clarke on the Sunday at the Ryder Cup and made a silly bogey by planting a gap wedge in the sand with my 3rd and taking two to get out.
A nice par on 17 set me up nicely for the last where I got on in two and made a good two putt to end the day with a satisfying 77 Gross.

    All in all 9/10

    Baltray tomorrow........

72 gross in Lucan yesterday, 38 points.

After a July to forget, it was nice to experience that cutting feeling once again. Was a breezy day and greens fast so not easy, but managed to offset a stupid double at the 2nd with birdies at 3 and 5 to turn in level. The score was flattering my game; I'd earlier decided to give my bro's RBZ driver a crack and was pretty much all over the place the front 9 so good iron play kept things going

Driver finally started behaving itself from the tenth, even though iron play wasnt quite as sharp. Still, my score couldve been much better except for some lousy breaks: on 12, I drove a little right on the short, downwind par 4 and moseyed up the hole still optimistic Id make birdie. Never saw the ball again. Just a freak disappearance as the grass isnt heavy and the trees arent really mature enough to gobble up balls in that area, so Bermuda triangle stuff. Also, a real kick in the guts as far as the score was concerned.

Made 2 good pars on 13 and 14 before finding more trouble on 15; 4 yards off the fairway right, and I was on my knees playing out from under a tree. Ended up getting up and down from 15 yards short of the green for par but felt like a good birdie chance lost. Went on to bogey 16, but then hit probably my best shot of the year into 17, a 3 wood from 250 yards into the par 5 that finished 20 feet away. Drained that for eagle and parred 18 with a knee knocker from 3 feet.

So some encouragement to take in to this weekend. 2nd round in the Captains Saturday and Scratch Cup final on Sunday; 2 decent efforts could yet salvage the season!

What a difference a day makes!! Walking on to the 1st Tee at The County Louth today I wasn't sure how things would go as I rarely play links golf and when I do I play VERY Poor, well today was no exception!!

The problem for me coming from a parkland golf background is that when I see a green I hit it at the pin and hope that i have the correct yardage to fly it far enough with enough height and spin to get it to sit quietly. THIS STRATEGY DOES NOT WORK FOR LINKS GOLF.

I was level par through 3 and was feeling ok but knew that my style of game would get punished eventually, and it did.
The round and score promptly ended on the fourth with a lost ball and even though I drove the green with my second off the tee I still made double, which was followed by more of the same, the lowlight of which came on 9 where It took me 9 to get in the hole for an out of +12. I made a par on 10 and thought a resurrection was on the cards but alas a bogey on the Index 1 11th set me straight. I came back in +17 which gave me a lovely 99 Gross for the day. But hey at least I broke 100 :)

The course itself is in decent enough shape, the greens, surrounds and aprons were all in great order even though I played like a dog I can appreciate good maintainance. One are I would feel iffy about was the fairways, they really felt a bit scruffy with quite a lot of divots and sand patches on almost every fairway but perhaps this is normal for links golf as I said I dont play much links.

    All in all 8/10

    My game 1/10 :(

Played ballinrobe yesterday in a society outing. Had 36pts(87strokes) played extremely well on the back 9 had 20 points with a scratch. It's a tough course, not used to playing out of such thick rough. Hard to find the ball at times it's that thick. 28 putts aswell(including a 4 putt), my short putting was extremely good.

    Score 35pts
    Handicap 10
    • 3 Birdies
    • 6 Pars
    • 6 Bogeys
    • 1 Double
    • 2 Blanks
    FIR 29%
    GIR 33%
    Putts 29 (Ave 1.6)
    Putts per GIR 1.5
    Up & Down 44%

Golf is a mad game altogether. Worst I've hit the ball in ages and yet only my 2nd round in the buffer all year, rest 0.1's. Was blocking everythig right off the tee for some reason. Seems to happen to me from time to time and I can never make the necessary adjustments needed to correct it on the course. Illustrates the importance of putting for me tho. 2 blanks were purely down to lack of concentration. Back to back scratches out of ok positions off the tee. Next game in 10 days time.

Played kilcock yesterday. Finished with 45 points and a 72 even par gross. Very disappointing back nine because I was -3 walking onto the 10th. Just a few wayward drives cost me a serious round!!

What coul8 have been a nightmare turned into a solid round in the medal today. Started double double so 4 over after 2.

Played solid golf from there on playing the following 16 in 7 over to finish with 83 strokes, net 72 off 11.

The disappointment is that I had 3 doubles, 2 of which were on par 5s which are normally my bread & butter on the home course. Was actually 5 over for the 4 par 5s which is not good enough.

The positives were that the putter was working great. Didn't make anything longer than 10-12ft but didn't miss anything 4ft & under so no 3 putts on the card.

    1 birdie
    8 pars
    6 bogeys
    3 doubles

34 points in the Presidents Prize in Ballykisteen today. Left a lot of shots behind me. Lipped out 2 or 3 times and went into the water on 4 and 8. Missed the playoff by 3 shots. It was looking good earlier on when I was 1 over after 3.

70 (+2) in Rd1 of the Captains today
Had a treble and a double on the front nine and couldnt hole a putt all day.
Greens were shaved down to 12 on the stimp, found it very hard to putt confidently or aggressively (the 3 3 putts didnt help!)
Missed 5 putts within 10 foot for birdie.
    34 putts
    67% fairways
    44% greens
    1 birdie
    8 pars
    7 bogeys
    1 double
1 treble (ball stayed up a tree :()

34 points off 8 on a tough links course but the wind wasnt really blowing.

Today's round can be summarised in one word.. disappointment.

    4 pars
    3 birdies
    9 bogeys
    2 doubles

As things went I was -3 after 6 holes, level after 9 and had a dreadful back 9, +10, horrible even thinking about it. Reckon I was going too good and got all defensive although I was damn unlucky on the back 9 at times. Lipped out three times and rolled back into bunkers twice in the space of two holes. Still comfortably within the buffer.
