New to this thread and new to the game. Never played golf as a teenager but due to injury and surgery six months ago i can't play soccer until at least next year sometime so have decided to take up golf and I'm loving it so far!

Played my second ever round today and after shooting a 130 in my first round last week , I played again today and after being at the range a couple of times during the week I felt much better today and shot a 112 including making my first birdie!!! ( was incredibly delighted with myself after the birdie :) )

Operating break 100 is underway where I aim to shoot less than 100 by next summer , wish me luck!!

Good start! A birdie in only your second round bodes well!

first competitive round i played in a couple of weeks. played ok, had 20 points on the front and 17 on the back, couple of 1 pointers on the back and a missed par putt that should have been easy. 37 in total ( 83 strokes) happy enough with it was breezy enough.

Played a team event in Castlecomer and had 35 points off 13 on my own card. Hit 10 Fairways and 11 Greens but my putting was atrocious, 4 3-putts. Simply not good enough, couldn't get the pace of the greens at all....

On a positive note my long game is in great shape, just need to tidy up the putting.....

Bit better today in DH off 10 in the medal (stapleford)

21 points on the front nine with a scratch and two one pointers

Then 11 points on the back nine.

Not as bad as yesterday but not great!!

Got a two as well so happy with that as well, 4 iron on the 5th to 6 feet!

A medal comp played as a stableford, that's gas, what next?, a stableford comp played as stroke?.
    Nice two BTW.

We alternate it to give some of the higher handicappers a chance at a medal.

    Cheers!

Playing in presidents in my own place today & was feeling much the same.

Stuck with it though, ended up with 31 points with a 2 on 17th the only highlight from a poor days work.

Putter was ice cold for the 1st twelve holes, couldn't buy a putt.

Was actually pretty happy with my game from tee to within 40yrds, chipping & putting atrocious.

Put in a couple of range sessions during the week & very happy with my ball striking. Time to put in some decent work round the greens!!!

Trust "paddy" to reinvent the game of golf, to give the "high handicappers" a chance to win, how did we ever manage before atall atall atall?.

Come play Druids heath off the white sticks and you'll understand why

76(+3) for 72 nett in round2 of our capts.
140 nett for 36 was off the mark

This really isnt logical, surely the high handicappers have the same chance in the medal as a stableford?

    not necessarily.
a high handicapper is far more likely to score 7's, 8's and 9's.
Druids Heath is a course which plays at least 4 shots more difficult to your average handicap, i.e if you play off 10 and get 36 points in Greystones golf club as an example, you'd be doing very very well to score 32 points in the Heath.

Im not questioning its difficulty at all as its clearly a hard track but its difficult for everybody and i dont see how stableford makes its any easier for high handicappers.

Like I said, a high handicapper, especially on an extremely difficult course is going to have multiple holes where he/she scores very very poorly, alot more so than a low handicapper.
Stableford at least it's just a scratch. It levels out the playing field.
A scratch hole is 2 points gone, you've some chance of recovering.
You've pretty much zero chance scoring multiple 8's or 9's

Again im not buying this, high handicappers having 8's and 9's happen..seen low handicappers do the same. Also regularly see high handicappers knocking the ball around in pars and birdies so if the handicap system is applied correctly that there is no reason for medals to be stableford.

Stableford comps are a dime a dozen, medals should be stroke.

Maybe someone in the Heath could tell us, but I'd imagine that the strokes competitions are generally won by lower handicap golfers.

usually 12 handicappers and below win the medals.

Medals are played off the whites with tough pin positions, DH is a very tough track even off the greens.

CSS off the whites usually floats around 74-76, the greens is usually 71-72.

The medal by definition is not necessarily about strokes, its about playing the course at its toughest setup. The whites alone in DH nearly add 1000 yards to the course and the pin placements will be tight and tucked away.

The junior scratch cup was won with an 80. That should give you an idea of how tough the whites are, last week in the inter scratch cup there were over 40 NRs.

In a strokeplay competition, two 8's or 9's would have you out of the competition. in stapleford if you have two scratches you can still be in contention.

Druids Heath benefits the low handicappers and good ball strikers, its very penalising off the first cut, if you're more than 15 feet off the fairway its unlikely you'll get your ball back.

11/12/13/14 are all testament to this as they're all tight holes with little relief for a wayward tee shot.

it's damn tough, but it's one of best tracks around imo

yeah, you'd want your A-Game going up there.
Not only a tough track, but if the wind gets up (which it often does), lots of holes play like a Par 7 !!!

Yes wind was up, did par the index 1 on both days. That was the good bit, with wind up couldnt keep irons on greens.

Matt, do you think playing a tough course like that improves your game. You've done great there ?

Medal play is the definition of stroke play and refers to play in which the score is reckoned by counting the strokes taken to complete the round so by changing the scoring system to stableford is it even technically a monthly medal?

74 strokes in Lucan on a very windy Saturday morning

Just had a look at my stats for the day with the putter, had 20 putts on the front 9, only 13 on the back. 4 3-putts, all of which were on holes I'd hit GIR.

God this game is maddening at times :(

It totally does, I usually do fairly well when I'm playing away now.

Its a bit frustrating when you're up there and feel like you're playing really good golf and getting penalised by bad bounces or greens not holding approach shots like you'd expect them to.

I find now though that when I'm playing more parkland style courses I tend to think more over my shots and I've also become a lot more creative around the greens.

I think though my putting has come on leaps and bounds since Joining, the greens are so penalising for bad shots/putts that you really do need to think a bit more about your putts - break/speed/grain otherwise you can easily end up 20 feet away 90 degrees from where you're standing when your putt was originally a 10 footer!
