34 points off 8 on a tough links course but the wind wasnt really blowing.

Today's round can be summarised in one word.. disappointment.

    4 pars
    3 birdies
    9 bogeys
    2 doubles

As things went I was -3 after 6 holes, level after 9 and had a dreadful back 9, +10, horrible even thinking about it. Reckon I was going too good and got all defensive although I was damn unlucky on the back 9 at times. Lipped out three times and rolled back into bunkers twice in the space of two holes.
Unlucky man, take the positives from the front 9 and take solace from the fact you're not like the fella who plays so bad and then writes his nett score in an attempt to make it look like his gross score ;)

84 strokes off 12 for a 72 in the captains prize today in Rathcore. Solid shooting on a tough set up. Happy enough to be in contention for next week.

    9 Pars
    6 Bogies
    3 Doubles

    Putts 32
    FIR 79%
    GIR 44%

88 gross off 13 in Gowran today in the medal.
Struck it well but a double and triple in the first four holes killed any hopes I had.

As an aside, the greens were the best I've seen them in years, highly recommend ye give gowran a crack before the season is out...

I had a mare last Thursday, 14 points in the front 9 then scratched 5 in a row, simple knocking forward to lay up and I was making a balls of it. Was going to head in but I stuck it out and finished the last 4 with par, dbl, par, bogie for 10 more points. Although 24 is hardly a good score, I left the course happy, which certainly wouldn't have happened if I headed in halfway down the back straight.
Never give up, and all that...

36 pts in Beech Park today with a scratch on the first. Could have been much better. Missed the green on 16 and 18 from about 130 yds and couldn't get up and down. Much better day with driver today which has been my Achilles heel all summer. Avoided a .1 which is always pleasing.

74 in the 1st round of the Captain's Prize on the Monty Course on Saturday morning. 16 Pars in a row followed by bogies on 17 & 18 was disappointing

Went to Lucan in the afternoon for the second round of the Captains there. Started off with 9 pars and a host of missed chances from inside 15 feet. Started of the back nine with a horror 7 on the par 4 10th after carving a drive left into a spinney. Preceded then to play ping pong with the trees before ironically holing my only putt of the day from 10 feet for the triple.

Finished up with a 75 for an overall total of 149. Big congrats to Benicetomonty who bagged the gross prize with 148.

Nett 79 in Moate on Sunday in 'The Bold Boys Corner' competition. Not good. I was mostly fine off the tee but found way too many bunkers along the way and my short game just wasnt there. Highlight - lovely birdie on Par 4 11th where I basically hit 3 perfect shots. Lowlight - took 9 on Par 5 16th after duffing a chip into a bunker after being greenside in 3.

Made reference to the prospect of a good weekend somewhat salvaging the year in my last post here, and it came to pass!

Shot a 1 over 72 in Lucan GC on Saturday which, combined with a 76 last Sunday week, was good enough to win the gross for the Captain's Prize. Really delighted to win, definitely something to tick off the bucket list for me since I'd never won it before. Especially pleasing considering I was up against some damn good players over the two days, including our own pinkdoubleeagle, who I only just manage to pip!

Played average the front 9 even though I didn't feel great over any shot in particular; scrambled pars the first 2 holes after wild drives, before slightly pulling my approach to a tight left pin on three. Fortunately, it caught the right side of the slope and trickled down perfectly to within 3 feet, which I converted. Derailing of the round threatened however after a disappointing par on the 5th was followed by a disastrous 6 on the index 16 6th. Luckily, that was partly offset by a nice 2 at the 7th, where I hit 8 iron to 5 feet, and that preceded pars on 8, 9 and 10.

Bogied 11, but again responded well with a gimme birdie on 12 after a nice pitch shot. Better was to follow; I pulled my drive slightly off the narrow 13th, and was left considering my options through the trees for my second. In the end, I hit a pitch and run cut 6 iron that ran a good 30 yards, scaled up the length of the green and dropped for a timely eagle 2! Felt like it might be my day after that, but went on to bogey 14, 15 and 16 to go from -2 to +1. That was deflating, especially 15 where I hit a dreadful gap wedge to the extreme right of the green before 3 putting. Frustration got the better of me on 17, where I tried to destroy my drive and snap hooked it towards the spinney left; somehow it made its way right across the trees out onto the adjacent 18th fairway, from where I made a simple par. Had to lay up on 18 after another pulled drive, but hit a good third shot to 15 feet and managed to 2 putt that for a safe par 5.

Was happy to get cut for my round but fully expected my total to be beaten, so was a real thrill to get the call Saturday night!

Was hoping to carry that momentum into Sunday for the final of the category 1 Scratch Cup. I was up against a 5 handicapper, so was probably favourite, but have suffered final and semi-final heartbreak in this event before so wasn't counting chickens! Again, I got off to a nervy start and was 1 down through 4 (and lucky to be there!) but a birdie on 5 and a winning par on 7 settled the nerves. Also won 9, 10 and 12 to go 4 up, but he came back at me to win 13 and proceeded to drain a 25 footer to also win 14. Was feeling the pressure by now but luckily he drove poorly on 15 to hand back the momentum. When he bogied 16, it was all over.

Again, since I hadn't won the Scratch Cup before, it was lovely to come through this time. Some of the better players in the club decided against playing in the early rounds for whatever reason, so am tempted to feel like Harrington may have in the '08 Open when he won without Woods in the field. Like him though, you can only beat who you're put against, so I'll take it whatever way I can get it :)

Cue groans from all members of the boards society as you're already leader in GOTY and now you tell us you're still improving!

Improving off the club HC, not the society HC. :(

played 12 holes in Athlone this evening, playing with our resident +2 handicapper and his brother playing off scratch - I was 3 over par for them. Bogeyed the first 2 holes stupidly after good tee shots, but then parred from the 3rd to the 10th, with 6 good birdie chances in there that I didn't take.

I was Striking the ball beautifully though!

Bogeyed 11 with a 3 putt after a great second shot 7 iron that I had to cut around trees from around 160 yards and then horseshoed out for birdie on the 12th to finish with a par.

The +2 handicapper had 12 straight pars but his brother was -2 after 9 and said he was going to birdie two of the last 3 holes to finish. Hit 6 iron to 15 feet on the 10th and holed it, got down in 2 on the 11th and then holed a 30 footer, downhill and across a slope for a birdie on the 12th to finish -4. Wasn't bad for a fella who's played half a dozen rounds of golf this year

So after a frustrating month of being laid up due to injury, coming back to soon and having little practice, I finally was able to complete a full 18 holes last week during my week off, wouldn't you know it I set a new PB of 91 and had 39pts off 23 in Kenmare Golf club off the back sticks.

Not the longest course in the world but tricky as you have to play to the right areas.

    http://golfshot.com/Rounds/Detail/233-18889135-18889380

And yes that is a 5 putt:eek: on the Par 5(even though it says Par 4) 6th!!!

Will hopefully break 90 soon to get that monkey off my back!

93/91 for myself and playing partner.
The weather is nearly ideal, mixed sunny and overcast which brings out the fun in the game. Will be trying out a lobber next time, God help me.

97 strokes 29pts in dungarvan this morning 3 blanks, the course had 20k worth of sand dumped on it in the last few days i played it 2wks ago it was perfect today it was awful, never seen the greens so bad:mad: thats my excuse & im sticking with it....

Luttrellstown Castle this afternoon for myself and a mate. It was another struggle today and ended up shooting 93 Gross. When I'm bad I'm very very bad!! :D

I was quite impressed with the place and before going I had heard plenty of good things about it and it definitely lived up to the hype. I enjoyed the course and its layout very much and though the greens were sanded they were fair, firm and for the most part true.
The bunkers do exactly as they are supposed to and are placed very well from the tee and round the greens if your in them you wont get away with anything fancy and a hack out is probably your best option.

I really enjoyed the course and its layout and on reflection is one of the best I have played.

I'd love another crack at it.

    All in all 9/10.

    My game 3/10 :/

34 points in a society outing in Thurles today. 17 on the front, 17 on the back. Parred the last which was nice.

95 blows in the MSC this morning in Cahir Park off the blues.
Poor start triple, bogey, 4+, bogey on the first 4. Finished level nett so can't be too unhappy.

No consistency off the box costing me big time-hooked tee shot on 12th par5 OOB, parred second ball.
Stuck under tree up against the wall right off 18th tee, second straight back off tree, three onto fringe of fairway,309 yards out-walk off with 6:rolleyes:
Shanked 5 iron on the par 4 8th off the tee, lucky to find it at the other side of the river-on in 3 walk off with bogey.

    Gotta love this game:D

I was -2 after 5 today (four 1 putts) and turned +2 (playing off 10) with 4 silly Bogeys in a row. Then on the 10th I hit a decent drive on a blind driving hole but after 5 minutes searching no sign. Ended up having to run back to the tee... next one hopped sideways under a tree... I ended up taking 9 & was bollxed & raging after it. Ended up with an 84 Gross after all that I think... I'm going to need some counselling.

    Like a cabbage today.
2nd round of the captains, 6 off the pace starting out.
Double, double, double, birdie, bogey, par, double, bogey, bogey.
par, bogey, par, bogey, par, par, par, bogey.
74 (+3) but horrible, weak, scared golf.

Hit some balls before playing and was brutal.

Bladed a greenside bunker shot on the first over the back, it rolled onto the path and ran 30yards downhill 20 yards below the level of the green.
    FIR 5/12
    GIR 39
    Putts 29 (thank god!)

Might still sneak a cut depending on the par/index of that 9 hole...

That'd be some consolation but I don't think I will unfortunately... Par 4 Index 2, will be rounded to a 7 which would leave me 82/72, CSS will be 71 or 72.

Very much a game of 2 halves for me today in Grange Castle, 36pts off 13. 23pts going out, including an eagle 2 on the par 4 for 6th, holing my pitch from about 80 yards, followed by a poor 13 points coming in, I'm going to blame the poor back night on Thursday nights partying at my friends wedding catching up on me :)

Got the cut. Only 0.2 but back to 9 at least. Also missed out on a Gross prize on countback after disinterestedly hacking my way to a Double Bogey up the 18th just wanting to get off the course. Serves me right! Was only 2 shots off the winning score. 2nd time the 10th hole has done me in during a medal. Last Medal I was +2 on 10 as well and took an 8 after I shanked one OB from the Fairway Bunker :). It's a tough hole but it's not that tough!

99 strokes around Waterrock last Friday.

Great tee to green, 71% fairways and 44% GIR but could not buy a putt, 42 in all.

    2 pars ( 3rd and 4th)
    7 bogies
    4 double bogies
    5 triple bogies

Finished with the ball I started with, now that's rare.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,557 ✭✭✭sydneybound

An annoying three putt at the end when I was originally putting for birdie for a 79 but ended up with an 81, sickening to say the least.

    9 pars
    9 bogeys

The good thing is I didn't miss a fairway off my drives all day, the bad thing is I missed all four par 3 greens and bogeyed each of them as a result. 2 other bogeys came on long par 4's when I was just short with my 2nd shots. 1 bogey came from a pulled second shot which ended up in a bunker and the other two were simply down to stupidity!

Need to cut out the silly mistakes and I'll be happy enough.

Played Mount Juliet today off the whites and had 33 points (+12) playing off 9. Was striking the ball great until I had silly bogeys on 6-9. Got back on track until 16. I had shots on 16,17,18 but finished triple, double, bogey.

Was happy with my ball striking but last 3 holes killed my score
