I don't have sympathy to be honest he knew what he was doing he also bet against his own team even he wasn't playing I do agree with what he says about hypocrisy i.e. The smout of betting companies associated with the game.

I hate Barton. And did so way before he joined your lot. He's a horrible human being in my opinion.
That said, his statement bears a lot of truth. Betting companies are amongs the biggest advertisers and sponsors in the game. Sky's own scores centre app keeps a running pre game and in play, visible by default, update on betting odds of the majority of games. Combined with the astronomical wages most players receive, it's a recipe for gambling addictions to spiral out of control.
Barton 100% has to shoulder most of the blame here. He signed contracts in which these terms are clearly stated... but in my opinion, the punishment is maybe slightly harsh given the hypocritical nature of gambling in the game.

Imagine that's the end of his career, given his age. Have no sympathy for him but his points regarding the links between the betting industry and football are very valid. Wonder if he will move into another role in the game or work in sports media. He'd make an excellent pundit.

I think its a ridiculous ban length given the context and the hypocrisy involved. Barton's statement articulates the problem very well.

Kranjčar is back in full training apparently. Think we need to keep him for next season, he showed what he can do in the short time he played.

He may as well have articulated the problem with brexit for the relevance it has.

Fact is he wasn't banned for gambling, or for gambling on football. He was banned for gambling on football matches he was expresdly forbidden to gamble on as they were conceivably within his sphere of influence.

He knowingly broke this rule on an ongoing basis over period of ten years. Why should leniency be shown to a player with probably the worst disciplinary record in the history of the English game?

Miller has signed a 1 year contract extension. Happy with that :)

His previous behaviour has nothing to do with it, why make reference to it unless you want to see him indirectly punished for that aswell. If you cannot seperate his previous from this case then I dont care what you think.

As I said, the context of his ban, i.e. when you compare it to other bans for similar offences, is clearly disproportionate. You can ride your high horse about it all you like but its clear that his motivation for doing it wasnt for financial gain or influence results which is why the rules are in place.

The FA had a high profile target to make an example of and they took it. If it was anyone else, would they have got that ban, I dont think so. How they dealt with this wont help solve the problem of gambling addiction for professional players, nor the perception of them and their ability to apply the rules with common sense and fairness.

It's relevant in the same away previous convictions are relevant in sentencing in court, it demonstrates his character and shows this wasn't simply a one off rule breach, but is simply the latest in a long list of disciplinary issues. I certainly believe those with substantial previous should be punished more harshly than those without.

It's also relevant that the FA wrote to him 5 years ago warning him about making match predictions on Twitter. His response was to mock them on Twitter rather than heed the warning

I agree, he certainly wasn't doing it for money or trying to fix games. But, who's to say his gambling didn't influence how he played? Perhaps shooting instead of passing when he had backed himself as first goals scorer, or taking a penalty instead of someone else taking it?

Who's to say in a game he wasn't playing, but had friends who were that he couldn't have influenced them? Obviously he didn't, but it's possible he could have, and that possibility existed only because of his rule breaking. Rules are in place to prevent any conflict of interest, and I'd prefer FA rules to act as a barrier rather than Joey Barton, or any other players sense or right and wrong.

I don't think a player with a clean record would have got similar, no. Barton has been warned about making predictions before, and has not learned from his previous bans. It's common sense that bans given to him will increase in length as he continues to break the rules. That's generally how sentencing works

Seems that Billy Gilmour has moved on to Chelsea, supposedly for quite a hefty development fee (£500k according to most sources).

Makes sense if given the opportunity, but can't help thinking he'll be swallowed up in Chelsea's sea of youngsters all across Europe.

Busy day it seems, Clint Hill apparently released.

Can understand why a lad of that age would move. A bad injury and his career could be over tomorrow, the Chelsea contract will likely see him set up financially for life.

As you say though, not a great move in terms of his potential first team opportunities

Good win today to be fair to the lads. Have to be honest and say that I have one eye on next season already. Wondering who Pedro is planning to move on and who he is going to get to bring in to replace them.

If Garner keeps up this form he might yet end the season with as many goals at Ibrox as Celtic.

Over the hill (36 before Xmas) player with no summer break who'll probably be your biggest signing of the summer. I think the closest you'll come to 55 next year might be one of your signings ages haha

Yeah, they were seen yesterday together.
